If it makes you feel better, Pissing Out Cancer has strangely become my comfort watch whenever I’m dealing with serious anxiety. I live in LA, and watching it a few times has been one of the few things keeping me sane right now.
1. Mierd-a-Lardo sinks into the sea, or the lake, either would be fine as long as it takes em all with it.
2. An open source decentralized social media platform that allows users to upload their data from Meta and opt-in to advertisements that would pay users for creating engagement.
I’m so sorry this is happening to you. Please don’t let them stifle your joy and creativity. You are an amazing person and we need your posts now more than ever
I’m going back to using RSS readers for most of my media consumption. No algorithms whatsoever, no ai, no trolls. Social media has ruined human discourse. We need to go back to old internet ways of consuming… individual websites and blogs, rss etc.
I have a response, but if I post it, it will be read by thousands of assholes and probably not by you.
I miss the days when you could send celebrities mail. They still wouldn't read it, but at least it wasn't public.
Thank you. I have, on rare occasion, done both of those things with Hank and others. I was lamenting social media being the primary avenue for fan interactions and its inherent incompatibility with those of us not comfortable in groups of strangers.
Yeah, I feel really weird about making my silly little content on Instagram right now. It’s the right platform for my medium, but I don’t want to give power to dickholes.
I have a pixelfed account at Pixelfed dot Social, but everytime I visit it feels almost as 'cold' / 'ghost-city' as visiting my account at Mastodon dot Art...
I think we need more creator owned media platforms (like MeansTV and Nebula). We can't let billionaires (yes even the "good ones") fund and control the means of distribution of content.
I feel you may not understand how expensive hosting large files gets when it's served to millions of views
While self hosting is great in concept, the whole reason shit like YouTube exists is because 99% of creators genuinely can't afford the kind of hosting required to put that stuff out there
Isn’t this literally the goal of decentralised social media? This is the train whose fire we should be stoking. It’s not hard to find people pointing out the difficulties decentralisation faces but the best thing all of us can do is take an interest in it, support it, promote it, fund it.
Like, if I have to live in a house full of q-anon MAGA Muppets l, surely you can distance yourself from interacting with those you find harmful for your psyche...
My job is no where near as interesting or fancy as yours and it still feels like I am doing nothing but empowering dickholes. So yeah, nothing but empathy.
Time for all of us to put our money where our mouths are, or it will be OUR heads chopped. Our choice! Stick together, boycott capital, hopefully survive 🤷🏽
I downloaded my data for IG, FB and Threads today. Then, I logged out of them all and will let the "I'm gone from here" notices sit for a while before I delete them entirely. I'm done feeling like I'm giving oligarchs and people who support someone like Trump (aka: dickholes) ANYTHING.
I ditched Amazon recently, too. I also left Disney+ and Netflix, but that was more because I got tired of wasting so much time staring at a screen. I'd rather be outside.
Nice! That’s progress! I don’t know much about Netflix, but the rest are pretty bad. Disney has been subtly racist, also they make people that use their service unknowing sign an agreement that says that you’ll never sue them even if they’re responsible. Bezos is hateful to the workers, small shops
To be honest, I’m starting to suspect the dumpster firey aspects of social media are by design.
Think about it: if you ran a global platform, and the only risk to your ownership was people politically organizing, why wouldn’t you pull all the stops to make all civil organizing impossibly opaque?
It explains several things at once: tolerating bots & AI content makes you doubt everything you see, amplifying morally outrageous content — possibly above & beyond what happens organically — makes you rule out coalition building, serving you bad news without action steps exhausts you, &c.
And it’s such a shame because, just a dozen years ago, we saw social media platforms fuel the Arab Spring, bringing about the biggest wave of democratization since the fall of the USSR.
I do think BlueSky, ActivityPub, and generally parsing out platforms from content are good first steps. I’d love to see a similar protocol developed for media-based platforms (i.e. a way to make, say, a federated TikTok/Instagram… let’s call it Vine)
I miss the days when corporations had yet to figure out how to make a profit on the internet, and it took a certain level of intelligence just to log on.
You might actually ve the type of rich and connected to create a new social media site, you just probably gotta keep it on the DL, and it probably won't be "done" till 2030
It thoroughly sucks!
Then again, we can all choose to not use predatory social media outlets.
Bluesky is at least trying.
The Fediverse is right there as well. Just waiting to be used.
We are now in a situation where we don't have to be where the tech oligarchs rule anymore. <3
Yeah? I work in retail. I'm on the ground floor of empowering dickholes by making them rich. And the amount of plastic and cardboard waste we create every day unloading products from packaging! My job is my nightmare tbh.
Direct action in your community, mostly. Food Not Bombs, Guerilla Gardens, Really Really Free Markets, Skill shares.
Sometimes, I worry that I am indirectly helping the system by patching over its problems but I'm doing the best that I can to help people without empowering the system more.
A great actor and fellow Italian created a commedia delle'Arte style players group when I was young. Francis Bilancio.
We performed with two ladders and a curtain that said BREAD NOT BOMBS.
We wrote songs and poems.
"Oh, Ma, I don't want to die. I don't think I can stand to smell the bodies fry.'
Let’s hope for a better day here on BlueSky. The open source nature of the platform should stabilize the social media space. Things always go downhill when a billionaire and a board take over a social media platform, and profit becomes the only motivating factor to operate.
Well, unfortunately dickholes will find power in a great many things. The point is you took time to bring joy, positivity, and wonder to a great many more people.
Was thinking on the internet becoming the opiate of the masses and how stupid it is for the wealthy to limit it so much. Got me thinking of rich and powerful folk reading Karl Marx back in the day and choosing to end religion.
I remember reading about studies showing great wealth kills empathy. I just find it curious that by stripping average folk of their distractions, they are escalating awareness of how bad off folk have it. And there’s only one place communal anger can go. Trickle up rage-onomics.
I'm hoping that this post means you might be thinking of helping a new or former platform change so we can have your short vids w/o the facism support. Can the project for good create the next social media video space? 🧐
I honestly dont see why we cant just do a 'blue-sky' with youtube. I understand it seems too big, but en4 ppl willing to work together to make it happen, even if it costs at 1st, would make it vry doable
Because you're vastly underestimating the scale at which youtube operates. All that data, all that video, that all needs to be stored somewhere. In an actual place. All that traffic routed through actual machines. The cloud as most people understand it, is a myth. It's all just piles of hard drives
To put it into perspective, I have about 10 self produced and edited videos stored on my machine of varying lengths up to a little over an hour. The smallest one is around 8 minutes and it's 4.8 gigs. Scale that up to millions of videos and you got a problem.
You're absolutely right. And starting a new platform would also have to be weighed against the environmental impact. But isn't it possible for work to be done with an existing rival to YouTube? I was thinking of a U.S. version of TT due to the ban and existing storage in TX.
All valid points, & i personally find it worth noting that meta et al R not releasing the true carbon cost of maintaining all this A.I., prob alarming. That said, I don't truly believe there is only 1 way 2 go abt a prob. I think there R more inventive approaches if 1 eliminates the goal 4 'profits.'
I'm sorry but you just can't get around the need for server centers and data storage when you're talking about a video sharing platform like YouTube. It's nice to believe in our ability to solve problems but we have to ground those beliefs in real world facts.
I’ve wondered how you are coping with that. Like the only way we have to educate one another also empowers people who have more power than any of us ever will, to misinform people.
I just spent too much time thinking about the word dickholes and what it means to use it as a slur and I’ve concluded that this is a pretty apt description of unpleasant people. As for myself I’ll stick with knob end for now. 🙃
Holy shit this is so real 😭
I got into making content because making photos and sharing them was always my passion, I build a following and paying customers, then every platform goes Nazi
Don't be deceived, there is plenty of dickholes here, and they are hell-bent on making everything around them into shit. I don't think Bluesky is immune
After a year on Lemmy I am starting to believe the format is the problem, and humans just suck at communicating. Every social media devolves into the worst possible world, some just quicker than others
True it's always been what we make of it. The fact that people get herded around by the algorithm and propaganda the way they do never ceases to astonish me. The inborn nature of our species itself is the problem. Education is the most important thing.
Maybe you should make a YouTube for them about what happens when rich tech bros go up against Facist governments. Get ready to be cucked bros . . . Jack Ma is your best example.
I wondered if some of you felt that way. Remember content is all based on perspective. I’d bet the majority of your hard work actually went to putting power into our minds and hands. At least from me, thanks.
Let’s see you comprehend that playing 🎮 for years also doesn’t rise to the level of *actual* hard work. I’m sure it’s a blast though. And anyway, I didn’t say his wasn’t good work.
Yet, there also absolutely exist gaming YouTubers who do more work than I could ever imagine subjecting myself to in my life. Not all user-generated content is bottom-of-the-barrel crap.
Can someone give me context? Is youtube doing something shitty? It's so hard to google things related to youtube because it's just half the results by default
I feel like we are all products of our environment. But with social media we are stuck in a ouroboros situation, where we are clearly responsible for the things we hate about social media
Mastodon is preferable and solves this problem. You know BlueSky is going to implode within a year or two as they let in advertisers. Their crypto connections tell you all you need to know.
There are already way too many A.I. and crypto bros here, but unfortunately they’re everywhere. I’m curious what makes Mastodon different other than the fact that it offers limited spaces. It would work for me, but not necessarily public figures.
Doctorow has a good writeup that expresses many of my feelings, even if I am here for now. https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/06/fool-me-twice-we-dont-get-fooled-again/ I think the truth is these private services are designed with the expectation that they will become worse and compromised for profit.
Anyone with some know-how can run their own instance of the service that anyone else can then follow/interact with (unless blocked by that instance). BlueSky is "decentralized." Mastodon actually is. Govs/celebs could run their own instances; everyone could have better control/experiences this way.

They aren't real, and the people posting them are not doing their cause any service, if indeed they even are even on the side of any cause and not simply a shitty foreign bot. It's homophobic, totally lacking in any form of wit and goes against the core value of not using and abusing ""AI"".
This is why I’m no longer on fb or instagram anymore, I didn’t delete the account so I’d still have my old photos but it will never receive another update…
Lol... :")) I also saw another one that named it "The Gulf of How Does This Make My Groceries Cheaper"... I'll maybe keep an eye out for it and send it your way if I ever see it again...
I have had this idea to make a social media that is run by its users in my head forever, my only fear is it will end up just like early 2000s tumblr again and i don’t think anyone wants that.
Just wait till the "React to Sci Show videos" channel starts getting more views than Sci Show. Dickholes so big not even a telephone pole could sound them.
The Internet is full of dickholes, especially on social media where they have the biggest loudspeaker, and it's going to get so much worse over the next four years ... you think you're tired now, you're going to get sore.
Content creators cannot unionize for the same reason non-classical musicians can’t unionize: they are contracted not employed so unionization is considered collusion and is illegal
No, I know, but nothing happens overnight. I do think we're on the cusp of a shift back to a more atomized Internet which I have always felt is the way it should be. Portable, federated, open, owning your own shit instead of giving your free labor to dickholes.
I've been feeling that way too. It was a choice to condense so much of the Internet into just a few social media platforms—a choice we've explored, found it doesn't work, and should move away from.
I subscribed too and I do think it gets at the issue. He should be able to speak directly without censorship & while making the bulk of the profit off his content, instead of distributors getting to decide both what he's paid & what he can say (& when to pull the plug). Hank would be perf for nebula
There's a tension there with Complexly's commitment to their content being free. (Hank-the-person is on Dropout from time to time.) But we still need to reckon with the fact that if something on the internet is free, you are not the consumer, you are the product.
I'd subscribe to these services if it was an option. I have with YouTube for YEARS, since it was an option, really. I'd do it with TT, Bluesky, FB, as long as it kept me in the driver's seat. These big companies running suspiciously profitable companies with only free products. FB is best example.

Would make disconnecting from these immoral rejects so easy.
I tasted it and it tastes good
There’s fun back on the internet
It’s was pretty boiler room there for a few years 🙏🏻🩷

I reckon it's time for a break from these types of platforms, as you're constantly posting aye bro 😜

We need to bring back the French revolution hair styles they gave to the rich, our oligarchs need the same ones.
Then the walled gardens came.
It’s a gift, and I appreciate every second of it.

Really like that philosophy thing you did, btw.
Things like conventions, and movies
The reality is to become truly wealthy requires you to become a bit of a dick
The best people can use it to coalesce around it and create a subculture touchstone that encourages humor, compassion, and learning.
With their powers combined, maybe all of you can subvert the paradigm.
What do you do? Work at a glue sniffing factory?
Personally I have a joke for you, look in the mirror.
I'm genuinely considering shutting it down entirely due to how much I dislike the utter insanity from Meta.
I don't think I'll be using Threads again either.
I got into making content because making photos and sharing them was always my passion, I build a following and paying customers, then every platform goes Nazi
It is not immune to the same fascist pressures in America and the ever growing compulsion to hoard and increase wealth like some digital aged dragon
Is it possible to work hard at work that isn't hard work?
Many such questions. Might be easier to just shut the fuck up about other people's jobs, I don't know.
This is literally art, and it takes 40+ hours a week to produce: https://youtu.be/r-RshpbRxTg?t=1214s

Dickholes?
I'm curious about the semantics.
There are great Creator-owned platforms out there
as a bloc they could just hammer twitter, insta, etc by depriving them of content and devaluing their networks
