The NEA will no longer fund arts programs that promote DEI or "gender ideology." The federal agency has cancelled grants that have funded programs for underserved communities for more than 20 years.

Do I really hate Trump and Musk? Hate really is such a strong word. Let me think...considering all the crimes, rapes, lies, theft, subterfuge, machinations, manipulations, grift, graft, sociopathy, malignant narcissism, lack of empathy for the poor, disabled, etc. my answer is: ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY YES
Well the good news there is that thanks in part to decades of culture war bullshit, the federal government doesn’t play anywhere near as critical a role in funding arts and humanities as it does in funding scientific research
The NEA’s entire annual budget is roughly twice the annual Broadway grosses of “Wicked,” which is a shameful reflection on how much we value the arts in America but does make them somewhat resilient to government meddling
Since this just keeps getting worse, I worry the big museums and galleries will be next. The Guggenheim, The Met, every city's flagship museum. It's pretty clear this regime would like to dictate what can be shown on their walls.
Collections and curators might be targeted, too, if it isn't stopped.
Huh…so Harvard, Google and US government all started process to curtail DEI after October 7th. So what do the power brokers of these fine academic, corporate and public institutions have in common and what did DEI leaders do to offend them? Mystery.
Just NAME IT SOMETHING ELSE. Not DEI or gender ideology. "Human Sociology" or something, you know, like how Republicans hide Jim Crow shit in things like "Voter ID."
Caving to Trump is a smart move on the part of Acting Chair Mary Anne Carter, as he's famously loyal and grateful to his lackeys. As a female artist/curator known for her work on disability and mental health, she will definitely not be targeted in an upcoming round of "DEI" purges.
Let’s write a play about a naked Emperor who can’t find clothes to wear to the celebration ceremony for the 250th anniversary of the USA because all the gay clothes designers have been banned.
DEI violates the 14th amendment. It's unconstitutional. You should be ashamed of yourself for promoting it. But if that was all such a great idea I'm sure they will be able to get private funding.
Lol I'm referring to the explicit viewpoint diversity (it was "too liberal" before) editorial backstop the staffed up in October from a $2 million donation from CBP. Marked change after
Okay so is anyone going to ask them what DEI means because like all they gave people was a bunch of trigger words and like, I'm sorry you need a safe space from these words but can we just add a content warning FOR YOU and not destroy American digital assets that we already paid for??
The only "gender ideologies" being promoted are sexism and transphobia. The existence of people who do not fit into an artificial rigid gender binary is self-evident and not connected to any ideology.
They're trying to erase trans people, ticking shit off the genocide list, and Democrats are afraid to even say the word "trans". I'm so tired of being a scapegoat
You are not alone. You have a large number of people fighting for your rights. Don't give up! It's early in the fight. This is going to be a long 4 years! Sending lots of hugs your way! BTW, dems are NOT afraid to say trans.
Schumer just looks afraid. LOL. We've got some good ones that are going up against the Reps. Also, we have a large number of attorneys that have already blocked a number of exec actions, and are fighting in the courts. We have your back!
I just wished I knew about them when I was younger! But going to EDC Vegas this year! Looking forward to some major quality time with my "kids" and their friends.
Two weeks ago I was steeling myself for four years of Resistance theater and Ibsen. Now, fingers crossed there’s even a ghost light on at the end of this tunnel.
Did the NEA say which part of DEI they’re against? No be more diversity? No more equity? No more inclusion? So I’m guessing all grants will go to white males?
"The NEA will no longer fund arts programs that promote diversity, equity and inclusion because of attacks from the racist and misogynistic leaders of the Republican administration."
Please, show some courage to call a spade a spade.
"AILEY enriches the field of dance and shares the African American cultural experience through performances, training, classes, and community programs."
We already don’t fund the arts in any meaningful way, but specifically calling out “DEI” is bone chilling. This is an authoritarian and unconstitutional government. That action is completely at odds with the 1st amendment. This ends in a fight and I’m limbering up. Anyone else?
I got an NEA/Iowa Arts Council grant and DEI was a huge part of it. I guess a wooden codex (inspired by the ancients!) documenting history lost to the most expensive thunderstorm disaster in US history is *degenerate* because a disabled nonbinary artist is making it???
Wow. The NEA and @npr.org just rolling over and taking it from the Nazis. How disappointing. Guess unbiased honest journalism really is dead. But the arts will fight on at the community level because that's what artists do.
Nazi leaders sought to control Germany not only politically, but also culturally. The regime restricted the type of art that could be produced, displayed, and sold
IMO they *totally* understand the arts (that is the point of art) and defunding them is exceptionally and chillingly calculated to help dismantle one of history’s strongest tools against totalitarianism.
so "The NEA is falling in line with the fascist leadership of this nation and will no longer try to counter white supremacy and the genocide or subjugation of any that dare stand outside or challenge the status quo"
It's from the Third Reich Playbook. Get your tribe angry and rallied against a group of people,. They become "the other", and then everything that is wrong (the price of groceries, plane crashes, etc) is the fault of DEI individuals. Hate to see what comes next!
I was listening to @npr.org ’s main news broadcast for a few minutes this morning, and it sounded exactly like a commercial for SpaceX, not like a news channel
Instead of "trimming the fat" of wasteful Govt. spending from the top down, they are eliminating stuff the bottom 1st. But we know this really isn't about the spending. It's about their agenda of removing everything they hate. And that's sadly everything good in this country.
Trying to remember who that other group was that declared art that didn't align with their political views as "degenerate," and eventually made a list of "forbidden art"... what was their name again???
Just because it is associated to DEI doesn't make it bad or something that should be cut. Folks in charge of the money should use some compassion and common sense, but it is getting quite clear those traits are severely in short supply. We ALL lose.
Would it kill media organizations to say DEIA? The A was specifically added to target #disabled people and the entire media seems to have not noticed or cared at all to even mention it or properly write DEIA
I’m not sure why you felt compelled to correct what I wrote but the A is very much in this and is not being mentioned. Even in articles and reports about ‘DEI’ they say in the body of the text of the reporting. Maybe you’re not disabled & it’s not registering how sinister this is
Certainly the whole thing is sinister, but in the actual text of the executive order I read, it only mentioned DEI. I’m all for reporting on the impacts the admin is having on disabled people and disability programs.
everyone in this thread expecting more from npr, are you familiar with npr? this empty bullshit is their bread and butter. they've done nothing but be meaningless mouthpieces for decades. that and car talk.
Use different words like rural and youth and inner city and push those mf grants right back out again after letting people know what the new focus is to be. You used to get a grant for BIPOC? Now it’s workforce development to boost urban applicant pools for careers in creative media. We got this!
So... anything that is related to the culture or artistic work of an "underserved" community is labeled DEI? Let's look for heavy pushback. Insist that NEA spells out what it currently means by all of these broad, ill defined phrases.

How dare we rob people from being able to be creative
To me, to create is what it means to connect to be human
Why are we killing humanity?
For shame
To be fair, it IS art. Just bad art.
This ain't hard.
Using what will prove to be a deadly talking point as a headline is not even half-assed, it’s a co-sign.
Saying trans people are following an ideology & implying the evangelicals who made it up are not is reprehensible.
Refuse. Why are they folding to Nazis?

Heartbreaking.
The arts should be for all. Not just wealthy populated areas.
I feel bad for artists though who art we may never see because they cannot get a grant.
When you do, it makes it more clear what the haters hate.

I’m having trouble wrapping my head around your need to correct this. The #disabled are specifically named & targeted in every part of this
