Every time a Labour MP is asked about Brexit, they trot out the same line; “We are not rejoining the EU” and the journalist accepts the answer and moves on. I suggest they respond with “Why? The majority of people are now in favour of rejoining so what is the problem?” I genuinely want to know.

Who has actually set this mantra in stone? Where are the MPs getting their orders from?
And because almost 10 years later, the join side cannot win the arguments on immigration or the Euro.
There you are.
There is no evidence that the majority are in favour of rejoining.
Gut feeling tells us all that they are, but that's not evidence. Only a referendum can supply that. And they won't risk it!
What would you do if it came out "leave" again. Keep going until it didn't?
Again it's only gut feeling though.

A PhD would require you to be able to ask 'explain why?'
We could have had a decent Brexit if Corbyn had won in 2017
Go back to that plan
It would be the end of the Bannon dream.
Both of which are manageable with strong leadership and a decent narrative, sadly Labour have not shown the leadership or the ability to take the country with them on anything of note so they won't kick this hornets nest.
That ship has sailed, I believe. Sunk, even.
As pro Europeans, i don't know where we go now.
It would be my choice if I had it.
They’ve been the most common sense people for a while.
Plus all the green agenda that you’d expect xx

He couldn't do this if we were in any way involved with the EU.
I also believe he is owned by wealthy US donors. He has to do a deal with the US, rather than rejoin EU.
closer ties yeah, and then maybe another referendum in a decade
He will sell us out to America if he hasn't already

Also, Lab are beholden to Right-leaning swing voters in marginal seats - the *only* votes which actually count in every GE. Push to replace FPTP with PR, and this will change.
Repeated ... for each and every cr@p answer they present?
[Learn from toddlers - they have brilliant skills in undermining "adults" who fail to think!]
Rejoin under a hostile media and under a democratic system where the opposition risks cancelling the process if they regain power is too much of a risk for the EU to even contemplate it.
1.
So we need 3 changes to even think about rejoin.
1. The Murdoch led media must be less hostile. Fortunately Murdoch is old and will die soon.
2. The Tories must buy in to the project to ensure it isn't cancelled if labour loose a future election
Meanwhile every EU member country has to unanimously agree to membership, and the Tories spent 8 years telling them to go fuck themselves on behalf of the country.
and 3. The agitators (Farage/Reform) must be discredited and removed from influence.
Until then, the safe bet is to develop closer ties, make up for lost time under the Tories and see what options are available until the conditions are right again.

Which is why he did nothing to help us stay in it.
Negotiating leaving took 5 years.
Re-entry, possibly Euro, no concessions, a Reform electoral victory, plus EU countries are still possed at us!
Ask again in 20 years.
It won’t work for them, in much the same way it didn’t work for the Conservatives.
Rejoin won’t happen under Starmer - he has to go, before we eat chlorinated chicken.
Will Starmer go for it? I doubt it.
I would love to see a Lib / Green opportunity.
It would be a far more informed choice now than it was 10 years ago.
But this would be way out for them. At no point since 2016 has there been a debate on this issue where voters have had all the facts. Even last year, the two parties which could win a Parliamentary majority refused to discuss it.
So,I'll say this as a voter who tactically voted last GE for @teamlabouruk.bsky.social,next time it will be a tactical vote for @libdems.org.uk or @greenparty.org.uk to keep Tories, Reform AND Labour OUT!

“Because we’ll piss off a massive group of people who are already turning on us in great numbers”
Would rejoining help most people? Probably.
Would most of those people believe Farage when he lies about what would happening upon rejoining? Definitely.
That’s why
They are choosing to keep the U.K. poor.
That’s not to say Labour shouldn’t be building one, but I will await to see what May brings.
Only if we vote for the Greens, will they be able to move left!
But we have to start now! 🇬🇧🇪🇺
So many now wont argue for Brexit, but say we cant #rejoin because, bc bc....
Second discussion today from someone claiming to be a supporter, arguing how difficult it will be, and, and but but...
Sounds like you used to be a rejoiner, bc we are what we do.And if you dont act to make it happen your agen it!
Me thinks you speak with fork tongue!

Problem for me, here in Epsom, it’s either her or the Tories. At least her party are pro active, even if she isn’t!
And possibly might have, like Blair, made some sort of arrangement with Murdoch to keep the worst of the dogs off.
Journalistic negligence.
The fact that the majority of people also support it is a mere secondary political consideration that eases the decision.
Government's duty is always to the national interest.
It’s an utterly inadequate response. But I don’t expect any other from the Starmer government. They’re fully under the hex, and no redeeming hero is in sight.
It’s Animal Farm.
