He was also considered controversial by the same squares that wanted to censor Manson. The same squares that want to ban anything that isn't white and heteronormative today. Same shit that's been happening for decades.
The faux controversy only made him popular and he wasn't really that good. And he ended up being a gross sexual abuser 🤷♀️ I was a NIN fan, though. And Reznor? Still good. And hilariously I don't remember him being in the spotlight nearly as much for controversy. His early lyrics were...spicier.
Sure it might seem banal today, but you have to remember that in the 90s Frankenstein was catching a lot of heat for his statements defending AIDS victims. Lotta people thought he should just stick to making movies! It was a pretty sad time.
Let's be honest Manson only really had ONE album in him, once Antichrist was done, he didn't really have any more and have just been riding that pony ever since.
It has grown stale and he can't come up with anything even remotely close to rival it.
Watched a three part documentary recently.
"He was a monster hiding in plain sight !"
He made no fucking effort to hide !
Did exactly what it said on the tin.
You have to understand, it was the 90s. The Mummy had just come out and parents were understandably worried that music like this could encourage Universal to try some Dark Universe shit.
Frank is getting down tonight. People are doing the monster mash. I'm starting to think Dracula is just a dude who just likes to vibe and boogie. Van Helsing is an asshole.
The most controversial lyrics were songs like Antichrist Superstar, songs that point out the issues with modern society that conservatards can't see if you smack them in the face with them
I have a memory from age 5 or 6 of watching a broadcast of some concert on MTV or VH1, and they were hyping up Manson's performance of "The Dope Show". In my child brain I thought it was a Three Stooges style comedy routine and never got to find out b/c my mom freaked out and changed the channel
"Fail to see the tragic, turn it into magic.
My big top tricks will always make you happy, but we all know the hat is wearing me.
My bag is in the hat, it's filled with this and that...
and my visions getting fat...
The rabbit's just a chicken in disguise"
I initially read this as "Marilyn Monroe" and couldn't tell whether I thought the joke was funny. After reading it a fourth time, I saw the "Manson". I don't know if this is a real song so I'm gonna have to go to Google. Please don't write on Bluesky that I don't get jokes
The issue I take is it trivializes Manson with no reference/service to his actual depravity. As such it reads like a form of whitewashing to me and I don’t believe people like him should be given any oxygen.
Marilyn Manson got his mystique from the perception that he was transgressive and shocking. Depicting him as corny and toothless is an attack on the image that gave him his power.
“Frank is getting down tonight”
Vulgar and pornographic. No wonder people shot up their school after hearing this. The shock may have worn off but it’s only because we’ve fallen so far.
He found out he could make a music career by dancing around with plastic halloween decorations to scare the old christian ladies, which would then give him access to women he could abuse
It seems tame, but have you considered that Frankenstein’s monster is the modern day Prometheus?
Marilyn Manson was endorsing hubris akin to those very same waxed wings that would dare defy the pull of gravity.
Most unbecoming, I tell you.
Most unbecoming!

Remember when people thought he was hot? Funny that never comes up when people wistfully talk about the 90s
After removing some of it's ribs of course

Pearl clutchers conveniently only hearing the first part: "He's talking about removing CHRISTIANITY!!!"
