The argument against Trump running for a third term isn't "Democrats don't like it" it's that it's not Constitutional. So how can it be part of a bargain?
The thing is Democrats like me don’t like this deal because I really support the two term limit. Republicans won’t like it because it makes them less likely to win presidential elections
I, for one, would not consider dealing in any way with a party that could not remove Trump from office in the next week, and that has been the case since 2016.
Besides, according to Republicans, Trump will be WAY too old to run in 2028 so even if he could wrangle a constitutional amendment to allow it, per Republicans' stance on the elderly, he is disqualified by age, and allowing him to run would be elder abuse.
I was born in a country that had a revolution to prevent reelection, period, so even the second term feels like too much for me. Third one is a dictatorship.
Mitch McConnell. He knew exactly who Trump was and how bad it could get but the GOP staying in power was more important to him. If he’d have given the green light, Trump would have been convicted at the 1st impeachment. He was shook by Jan 6th but still refused to hold him accountable.
And if Trump tried running anyway and even if some states went with it and put him on the ballot, most states probably wouldn't. The ONLY way he ever gets a third term is through seizing power in some coercive way and overthrowing the constitution.
The way this administration is shitting on the vets & the military I doubt the military would back any coup Trump attempts to stay in power. In fact, I think Pete may be shot by his own troops.
Realistically they'd need the entire military to back them, and I REALLY don't think the generals would back orders for something like that. You might get a few rogue detachments but I think most would remember their oath.
The only bargain I can think of would be if we let every state secede, and let Florida expel Mar a Lago first. Then Trump can be the God Emperor of Mar a Lago for as long as he’d like.
The number of people required to be compromised in order to effectively rig a vote is ridiculously staggeringly high. It’s decentralized and localized for that very reason.
Little Miss Mary in Paducah is going to repeatedly check and verify her polling station’s numbers were accurate and valid. There’s millions of Mary’s in red, in blue, and in white (neutral).
You can’t just flip votes. If it were that easy, Fox wouldn’t have settled Dominion, they’d have fought
If we want to take a moment to attempt to huff some hopium instead of being dour, Winconsin just showed us these ghouls can't just force elections to go their way. I dare them to try and push a third term or take away our voting rights and watch the whole damn country not take too kindly to that.
Additionally, democracy has always been fragile and required hard people to do hard things to preserve it. Those hard things will come at a steep cost, because they always do, but there are people willing and able to pay it.
Nah any compromise will specifically state that it only applies to Republicans, Dems are still beholden to pre-2016 laws norms and standards at all costs.
create a new position called the "Prime Minister" of America, then let Trump keep calling himself President and tell him his new office is in the back of Rikers Island, he's just gotta go deep in there to find it.
Excellent point. As usual, they're thinking it's all about them. Obama could win a 3rd term easily against any of them. Heck if the law is changed even Bill Clinton could make a comeback. The people loved Bubba, and he really did eliminate the debt and balanced the budget. 😏
Bill Clinton made draconic cutbacks to Medicaid (which hurt black people the most, but also the poor in general) and brought Reaganism into the Democratic Party with his "centrist democrat" BS. So we've had corporate democrats for president ever since.
The question is, “Can this be done under the Constitution?” The answer to that is an unequivocal “No.”. If the question instead is just “Can this be done (at all)?” then the answer is a 100% Yes, through unconstitutional means.
I thought it was actually a reasonable out-of-the-box idea: make third terms consitutional in exchange for making the electoral college unconstitutional (i.e. getting rid of it). He argues that it's a window of opportunity to get such an amendment passed, and that it would be worth the trade.
Maybe if it also involved EU in control of electoral monitoring and proportional representation you would have a beginning of a point. That’s more likely of a hard sell than even the Yale professor’s original hot take.
I have to admit I’m stubborn — but I have an inclination to support this because I think that one way to redeem the 🇺🇸 polity before the world quickly would be for the 🇺🇸 voters to just absolutely wreck him in a crushing landslide election
Plus we all know he'll do everything he possibly can to stay in office after 2028. "Technically I won the electoral college votes that Congress counted" is a far lower bar to illicitly clear than "The constitution says no but I'm doing it anyway."
I hung in there, allowing the benefit of doubt to the Washington Post and Bezos, but cancelled my subscription yesterday since the Opinion pages became blatant Trump propaganda.
JFC, are they that needy? I hope all the scientists the US has fired end up in countries like Canada, where they'll be put to use out-smarting the "patriots" State-side.
Know where bezo’s is this week? He’s getting married and has leased all of Venice for the ceremony.
I’m sure it’ll be ok after sticking it to Italy with tariffs.
This is seditious trollery, but par for the course, typical of the Opinions page for the quarter century I’ve read it. Little has changed, and Fred Hiatt was worse than that sad sack Shipley, if he’s even there.
They still have several very good columnists: Rampell, Bump, Bacon, Hockstader, Porter.
That's "Bezos the KKKlown" if you're not part of his inner big top.
Clearly, they ran the numbers on what popular vote presidential elections would look like AFTER all the voter suppression and fucking with citizenship/SSA records and liked what they saw in terms of permanent KKKristofascist rule.
You have got to be motherfucking kidding me. This is real, I just checked. That does it, I am canceling Amazon. This is so far beyond batshit crazy that it makes batshit crazy appear sane.
I thought this was a satire headline. I can't tell what's a joke and what's reality anymore. And the headline is real. I can't read the article because I dropped my WP subscription and I'm probably better for it
You know, if I was one of the 3 richest people in the world (unless of course I was in Putin's Russia-different ballgame obvs.)...I think I might just be a bit more FUCK YOU I'M TOO RICH FOR YOU TO FUCK WITH ME, than Jeff Bozo. Spineless invertebrate craven techbro billionaire fucking human jelly.
wouldn't that be so great! if not, maybe at least jordan peele could do it...
"lots of people, grown men, tears in their eyes, they|..."
luther: CRYIN!
"uh, ok ... cmon luther, rope it in..."
Remember when they were wigged out saying he wasn’t gonna leave office and try for a 3rd term. 🤪. But I wish he would say that cause it would cold stop the trumpers from wishing trump a3rd term.
As soon as the orange toad is out of office The court cases against him can come back. He would go to jail. So if by chance they pull the bullshit that a president can run for a third term he's in for a surprise. Obama can run and I know he would. And the orange turd would go to jail.
The featured editorial made me so angry that I couldn't finish it. It proposes to promote an amendment to the Constitution which links doing away with the electoral college and allowing Trump a third term. I can see no benefit to this, I am also leery of abolishing the electoral college.
I am concerned that small states with lower population will be excluded from consideration if it is done away with. I think that the House should be expanded with each state getting as many Representatives per population that Wyoming does, approximately one per 400K. This would improve things.
I used to glance at the opinion titles and authors. I now scroll quickly by. Not looking forward to canceling should actual news articles develop the same degree of bias.
So is the idea here that giving the fascist states the ability to get their fuhrer for 1 more term & do even more destruction to the country is an incentive for them to get rid of the electoral college?
The idea that the popular vote guarantees democrats a win is now broken. Guess they missed that…
Looking forward to seeing this headline tomorrow.
"The compromise that will make giving the Democrats the Presidency and Congress for the next 20 years worth it"
I'm honestly curious if one of some of these billionaire wanks will suddenly become socialist the whole time when they realize there's no one left to buy their crap and make their next quarter profits bigger once they burn it all down and nobody can afford anything.
Seems like the more people that are employed and healthy in a consumer society the more people will buy products. And Trump’s 6 bankruptcies should be proof enough his ass backwards ideas don’t work. But as someone told me after I posed this question before…it’s the cruelty. Sick ass people.
They'll push for laws that will allow them to pay employees in company scrip (which will be a cryptocoin, natch), so their workers will have the freedom to rent all of their necessities from the corporation's storefront instead of having to suffer the tyranny of owning things.
The people need to Physically Remove ALL bad politicians & DrumpELonia from their offices, then forcibly detain them in the Private Work Camps. The only way to save Democracy is to make sure certain "players" can no longer be part of the game
I tend to play the safe side but not mentioning any kind of fighting here on this site. Oh I do beat the hell out of the orange turd verbally. But I'm not going to give the regime any reason to violate my civil rights by breaking down my door taking me into custody without cost and locking me up.
The obese, junk-food junkie who squirts cortisol to his brain every time he gets mad will most likely be dead before any third term. Or in an Alzheimer’s unit.
When are people going to realize that Trump is the opposite of a business genius. We've known he's lacking in brains or anything resembling a functioning neuron for decades
Please take action @5calls.org @indivisible.org @50501movement.bsky.social @generalstrikeus.bsky.social
Tax breaks and tariffs they want to bankrupt the working and middle class the extort our work and assets. Economic terrorism. Their greed will not end. Hands off protest April 5th.
This is strange, because Ayres is an amazing researcher. He’s done fundamental research on discrimination. Brilliant guy. I can’t imagine why he would do something like this.
Why? What's going to be left for to rule over, other than the ruins of a once great country. What is hell is he going to do other play his harp and roll around in his gold and glitter. Tacky Bastard!
We're going to do some amazing things with Amazon next week too... when everybody finds out all that shit they buy comes from China and prices go up 35%.
This reminds me of Brexit and Cameron's contention that people wouldn't be stupid enough to vote for it so let's present it. People supported Trump enough for him to win. Twice.
It's one of these galaxy-brain "why not make a grand bargain?" takes, i.e. get rid of the 22nd amendment (allowing Trump to run again) and get rid of the electoral college in return
I.e., why not give the most dangerous president in the history of the United States 4 more years to end free and fair elections for good in exchange for something that will be meaningless without free and fair elections. Do these people listen to themselves?
A Trump third term worth it?? You mean a turd Trump term.. I haven’t come across a single positive anywhere about Trump’s first or second, unless it’s delusional MAGA or sycophantic govt members. He’s one of the Dork Horsemen of the Apocalypse bent on nothing..NOTHING but vengeance and destruction
Would be great to see Bush, Obama and Clinton do a skit on SNL talking about how they also like to run a 3rd term. We need to call out the stupidity here of Trump
the Uni administration b/c I’m thinking the majority of faculty disagree. They need to quit then & go to different uni and build again. Ivy league be damned.
Have you ever been a poor person in the vicinity of a standard ivy League alum? Their noses scrunch up so much you'd think someone passed gas. Not all, but the rich despise the poor. That culture of hate is what ties all of the fascists together
I'm sure all schools do this to an extent, but the way the ivies go out of their way to ensure that their alums get the positions of power is really damaging to our democracy.
Today I canceled @washingtonpost.com. I'm heartbroken but I can no longer continue to support my once most-trusted news source. I value the many journalists that continue to do good work and hope we can find a landing spot for all those dedicated talents to do their excellent reporting.
EAT ME!!!! WE THE PEOPLE WILL BURN IT ALL TO THE GROUND BEFORE WE ALLOW THAT to HAPPEN! Should’ve have happened the first time !!! They are incompetent and FELONS.

he'd blow Trump for that
Hearing people joke about this is weird.
“In this Council Bluffs diner, the Obama-Obama-Trump-Trump-Trump voters are big supporters of a constitutional amendment”
It's all just vibes, do whatever you want.

TODAY of all days... America is going down because of Trump's stupidity and he chooses to run an inane Headline?!
He's as looney as they come - The Graham Family has to be sick to their stomachs all day every day!
Fuck straight off. Out of touch billionaire idiot.
Then watch republicans whine and squeal about how unconstitutional this would be.

And yet, @crampell.bsky.social is there, and I want to support her. Yet, I can't. It's infuriating.
