On the plane yesterday, sat next to a European couple living in the US, and the topic of whether they were thinking of returning to Europe came up. One of them noted they felt safer here because "you have oceans." But the general agreement was that right now there's probably nowhere truly safe.

Hell if you all want to adopt Western NY. I wouldn’t be opposed to it lmao
I feel sorrow more than anything else
Climate change is going to get you anywhere
And that’s baked in
Whether or not we get a nice new war in Europe
but why so few trying to limit it
when thatll be the difference between
a few safe places and none

But delaying the inevitable is what life is all about, so...
Believing otherwise is a sign of a weak intellect.
But also, the Bering Strait exists. Alaska is very close to Russia.
Recently updated to account for cat and car.
I do feel safe in the UK and definitely on the Continent, but one never knows what idiocy might develop.
As a European, I feel safer living on the continent that hasn't had their government taken over by Russian assets
Although Alaska is very close to Russia.
As a US citizen, I think the US is in more danger than anywhere except the Ukraine because of the russian assets.
If the Axis of Evil (US, Russia, China) gets suddenly interested in wool, that's probably very safe.
But perhaps you have no idea the condition in which people live elsewhere on this globe. you can travel to Uttar Pradesh (just say Allah or Pakistan words if you wish) or Manipur in India or a lot of Africa, far east, Gaza, Afghanistan etc to experience it.
When you use this site you realise much of Europe would fit into the area west of the Mississippi.
They all comment about
1) not worrying their kids will come home from school in a body bag
2) better / cheaper healthcare
3) better quality of food
Are you in America Catherine?
The people fighting for rare earth minerals need it.🤠
We are in the process of studying our options.
Having an ocean against Russia won’t protect us from having a nazi in the White House.
Anyway, where / how in the world can you escape from the all-seeing eye of X-Man?
We're the bad guys trying to start WWIII. There isn't a safe place on Earth. Soon, no one will take American refugees.
Seems like science fiction tried pretty hard to warn us. And history.
Because yeah… nowhere is safe.
It’s disturbing how many advisors within the current administration have publicly expressed this as welcome.
1. Intercontinental ballistic missiles.
2. The Earth is round not flat.
You can bet that we're keeping a close eye on what is happening.
The US holds a massive chunk of the world's money. The world holds massive amounts of US debt.
The fixes are either cut US loose or fix the problem. Pain either way.

Americans do realize that also a war just between Russia and the EU could very easily go nuclear?

Limited resources brought in from the mainland, decrepit infrastructure, strong Russian presence, Svalbard treaty not respected with increasing risk of aggression as a strategic location for Russia.
But I guess we have bolt action nazi rifles with 4 bullets…
Fascism is rising globally - Europe & Canada are only an election away from this themselves.
Moving countries is hard in ways most people don't realize - it would suck to move just to end up in this situation again.
I've looked seriously into various EU countries + Canada though.
(That said I really, really don't want to move. I love Chicago & have built a lot here.)
Canada won't take my disabled ass, tried that a few years ago.
I think we're stuck in the US for the foreseeable future...
We're both white, (not that it should matter) but we've always felt welcome safe and included in Asia.
Never has the person I voted for won in a provincial or federal election. I was so hopeful years ago when the federal Libs promised proportional representation. So disappointing.
and that is just the beginning. i think it'll be even more visible as time goes.
We overthrew one king and we can do it again for sure.
Frankly, I think death would be better.
Here in Finland the first thing I did when the war started was order a check-up on our apartment building's shelter, because being prepared for anything improves safety, not decreases it.
I told them only MAGAs wont get any Beers and Brats. Those idiots should stay in their land of the free.
I tried. I couldn't. I just apologized for Americans being so stupid.
I looked it up for fun: Moscow to Paris is similar distance as New York to Houston. Russian border to Poland is shorter than Manhattan to New Jersey.
Me? I'm worried we're going to have an earthquake like 1755
I'm sad to hear so many people are feeling unsafe right now (for good reasons) - but I hope that there are moments of solidarity and kindness to be found in the other moments of life.
Being ignored by the US.
I felt completely safe in the UK; I feel less safe here in Australia, but not the 'I'm going to die' sort of unsafe.
Another Nazi-Hitler.
And bankruptcies as a result of medical treatment?
A couple years ago I wrote about how it seemed, sadly, to capture the zeitgeist:
https://www.someweekendreading.blog/greens-asymmetry/
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages..."
"All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual man-in-the-street
And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
...
We must love one another or die."
The drifting dream is done.
The long-gone goblins loom ahead.
The deadly, who we thought were dead,
Stand waiting, every one.
-- Walt Kelly, "For Lewis Carroll and the Children," 1954
The bits on the runup to the war are chilling.
Very different from 1939.
(well it almost more like "fucked off"!)
Good but a little less substantial than I hoped probably for good reason

BISH YOU HAVE TAXPAYER FUNDED HEALTHCARE! YOU DON'T HAVE YOBWORRY ABOUT BANKRUPTCY IF YOU STUB YOUR TOE TOO HARD
I grew up in 70s and 80s Germany within walking distance of the Iron Curtain. After it fell, I thought that fear of being in the middle of a nuclear war would be a thing of the past. It lasted just over 30 years...
But in Europe, Asia, and Africa, your neighbors can just roll up to your borders with tanks and start blasting away. Occupation is a real risk.
Yes, that's possible in North America too, but Canada and Mexico are not aggressive powers.
I wonder if we’ll ever get a full accounting of all the strings being tugged in DC.
Well yeah but I mean he’s only on our side like half the time…
I just feel heartsick.

um ...
they were on a PLANE, yes?
Multiple such conversations, each week a little amplified.
I expect tomorrow morning’s travels to include the strongest conversations to date.
I’m worried abt my LGBTQ family safe frm violence, my husband’s SocSec $ safe frm bng withheld by Musk, my business & bank accts safe frm becoming property of some man (or the gov) bc I’m a woman. Lots of places safer than here
Since Friday night good people have donated more than $ 1,2 millions (52% from Americans) to Ukraine on President Zelenskyy’s United24 initiative which is an online platform to raise funds to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom and democracy. https://u24.gov.ua
