I would like to think an independent actor just...ahem...saved United Healthcare $9.9M / yr. Call me cynical, but I'm more inclined to believe his co-conspirators found out he was about to turn "state's evidence" and made sure the rat won't be doing any talking.
Also they could just make him “have an accident” on a work trip and not give the average person a rallying cry and a reminder that we’re in this together.
These horrendous failures of our care for our elderly definitely falls on the the insurance industry, but it couldn't have occurred without our failed government.
The Fortune Magazine richest people alive list will come in handy.
Why don’t I just staple the entire list right into this cute little “Death Note” book I found in the park?
I mean, using it better than Light did isn’t necessarily that hard. For example, keeping one’s ego in check puts you firmly on the correct path to clearing that goal
Bold of you to assume the CEO of a health insurance company is there to save lives. They are there to profit off of misery. Now that misery has come home to roost.
Unbridled greed at the expense of all others feeds my nihilism. His family enjoyed the trappings of the fortune he made reaming customers, so I cannot even summon a sad feeling for them. I am broken. Capitalism does that.
You joke, but the other members of the conference he was attending didn't cancel or even reschedule anything that day; they walked right over the spot where their peer was shot to death.
They were probably all doing some vulture math on who was going to get new offices with the changes in the corporate heirarchy after the top job opened up.
You did a great job with that last frame. Desire the fact that he's a practically featureless purple guy I recognized that as the Brian Thompson headshot before I even read the comic.
This comic is definitely about smiling. No false advertising there. You promised a comic about smiling and you delivered. That's why I clicked like. It was a very positive Bluesky experience for me. Thank you very much.
you don't have to reply to these guys, if you check his feed it's all politics. Not once pic of a pet or sunset. Not saying this account is fake for sure, but close enough.
All the posts that are like, "don't celebrate murder" are like that.
Yeah, I should really know better by now, but years of being on the other place have put a sort of knee-jerk response in my head. Old habits die hard, I guess.
I am a real person who is shocked by the rampant ugliness surrounding this murder. I’m sorry to see killing cheered by anyone, much less people on this new platform.
If we’re honest, this guy’s needs shouldn’t have costed anywhere near the $10 Million he made a year off of the suffering and deaths of others. He could could’ve lived a decent life even with far less, but he chose greed.
Oh yeah, hundred percent. I'm not gonna glorify the death of another human being, nor am I saying that you are. However, I accept the cruel necessity of eliminating the corrupt. It just saddens me that we are at this point in history once again, but I understand why. These things don't just happen.
We in the UK know very little about him and his company.
When I read my husband the news report, his sole comment was 'you don't get that kind of job unless you're a bastard'.
(My husband has spent the last five years working in NHS finance.)
One report claimed "denied coverage" for strokes and other elderly care went from 10% to 22%, increasing revenue $280 billion and killing many elderly people. That's Martin Shkreli type of greed and inhumanity.
You want empathy for Thompson? Look in a dictionary between emaciated and emphysema.
Agreed, if only we had more of him to do gods work!?? We could send them to Palestine get rid of all of those murdering terrorists. But one serial killer group at a time, am I right!
Oh no why are you censoring people, that sounds like fascism!?? That's the right, not us people with common sense. Also your handle is sexist, are implying vaginas are bad by calling by calling Elon a pussy??? Your scary!!!
Not really, in general in Europe we have a mandatory government health insurance but there is a lot of money in private health insurances, private hospitals and practicians, meds… Lots of very legal profiteering around healthcare even here.
Still questionable why you would deserve better healthcare based on your income. On top of that, lots of corruption from elected officials trying to harm public services to push people to private alternatives.
Agree that this is still better than the US healthcare system.
However, the fact is that everyone is given the access to basic healthcare for free.
My spouse just needed appendix surgery. Went to a free hospital. No bells no whistles. Surgery went fine. He could pay for a fancy hospital and get basically the same.
they generally have things like profit caps etc instead of the total regulatory capture the "healthcare" industry enjoys in america but you're right that many western countries preserve privatized inefficiencies to enrich capitalists from people's suffering and death as much as they're allowed
He was on his way to a meeting and after he was shot, they didn’t even postpone the meeting. He made them tons of money and an attack on his life wasn’t important enough for them to reschedule.
Hey, remember how the prime minister of Japan who was assassinated like two years ago because he was directly tied to a dangerous cult, and Japan's response was to remove the cult's major influences on the government?
Anyway, yeah, violence never solves anything.
the "violence that won't fix anything" has emboldened action and protest against the injustice and impunity of the healthcare system. health insurance companies are trying to protect their CEOs' identities because they're fucking scared.
Not gonna lie, most of the insaurance is shit. The coverage for any actually needed procedure is barely anything. Or high enough to be day light robbery.
You may have mistaken me for a congressman? I don't get to vote for "socialized healthcare." I voted for representatives who claimed to SUPPORT single payer healthcare until some insurance lobbyists bribed them not to.
Just saying: if money is protected speech, bullets are too.
The insurance industry lobbies the government so hard that it's impossible to get anything substantive passed. They profit off of plutocracy. Even something like Obamacare could only ever be a meek compromise. They preside over scores of deaths that would make the average war criminal blush.
Nice that you recognize that we have the left and the fascists. While I am not a violent person, of all the deaths by gun violence that I have read about this year, this one upsets me the least
Honestly I worry for this country if we have to justify a death from some dumb company policies. I know it ain't right but sheesh it's still a human life here that was murdered. At this rate we might as well be inching closer to The Purge.
The most profound lesson of all was this......for all the money he made, the shareholders and the people he one upped at the fancy dinners and events......he was nothing more than the money he made.....I would rather be well liked as a working man than "loved" as a CEO....
The day of.....his face was removed from the company he made millions for.....for whatever it's worth......he did nothing for the world....I don't condone murder at all....but I won't feel bad for him....
Raped women. No one cares. Raped girls. No one cares. Women & girls bleed out in ER parking lot. No one cares. But one white, dead squad prkk: NATIONFUCKING GUARD!
Only we can save US.
And before anyone runs to the mods, everything I’m saying is strictly for entertainment purposes.
I would never advocate for the killing of the one percent that has repeatedly fucked everyone on the planet for decades because the red line on the chart of the economy has to go up
at this very moment the phones of engineers across this country are ringing off the hook with desperate bunker clients demanding IMMEDIATE changes to the plans!!!
I've been recommending this the people since yesterday but Cory Doctrows Radicalized is a collection of 4 novellas the titular one is about a man joining a dark web movement targeting medical insurance corporations and another is the mask of the red death about billionaires fleeing a pandemic.
Oh... I can't agree with that.. murder is wrong. If we can just say murder is right because we believe differently what would stop the maga movement on us? We have to be very careful
It won't stop them. Pinkertons killed union workers for unionizing, and literally had to be fought and killed to push back. Politicians only listened to MLK as the Black Panthers killing people made it clear they'd be slaughtered otherwise. Nazis had to be killed to stop a genocide
Monsters push until they are punished. Trans, gays, blacks, women, the disabled, etc. get murdered by MAGA and other alt right all the time now. Why would they stop if people keep not fighting back?
I see where you are coming from. I just disagree. Now the job is a risk and because the system get money from the government they now can raise prices because it's a dangerous job
No. That was work force unionizing. Very close. Unions are a legal term. Unionizing and making it political was later. I only know American history because I live in America. Just like Canadian healthcare doesn't affect me, nor does their history. I'm worried about my country
it does and it did!! they only do that shit because theyre not afraid of the consequences, but being six feet under makes sure they never do anything bad again
More like millions, I mean that system killed a friend of mine and probably one of yours too (and that's not getting into the fuckedupness of provider networks and medical pricing in the US).
I mean right now it's probably being prepped for burial, so it's not exactly accessible to the general public. But hey, what happens in the morgue stays in the morgue, I guess?
it's rare to see the power dynamic flip, where the victim isn't part of a vulnerable group. it's hard for ppl to muster sympathy for a villainous 1% character felled by a for-the-people avenger type over an issue that negatively impacts the lower classes of US society equally. In this essay, I will
Why would I waste a breath condemning a murder I've seen as an increasing inevitability for most of my life? The US's "justice" system has been continuously failing it's people, imo most overtly in 2008, and that's led to increasing anger and empowered white collar criminals, which included Thompson
It absolutely is deliberate, it's an inherent component of their business model, it's how they make money. To be profitable they have to deny people care.
It is deliberate. UnitedHealthcare used an AI with a 90% failure rate to vet the insurance claims and they knew about it and yet did absolutely nothing to fix that point.
like.... the health insurers did, are doing now, and will continue to do unless we dismantle a ghoulish and vile system that strips americans of their right to health?
gotta see the forest for the trees mate. i take no pleasure in death, but do you actually see the death and agony?
One could argue that deriving profits without pleasure is far more evil. The implication is that they do it in spite of knowing it's wrong, which is a repugnant level of malice towards your fellow man.
They take and then plan how to take more in quarterly planning sessions with OKRs which are so far abstracted from any good they can actually give humans that the 'leaders' don't even see the continuous cycles of death and debt they inflict on their own society, families, and neighbors.
Okay, so I'll be seeking help. I guess you mean a therapist. I'll lie on the bed and ask them, "If someone killed thousands of people, is it wrong for me to feel happy when they're shot themselves?"
And then I'll see what they say. I'm sure they'll say I'm absolutely raving insane and need drugs
I first saw brain matter when I was 20 years old. Thought it was pretty funny because the guy who was killed was digging in an IED in Afghanistan that could've killed any number of people. Does that bother you? Why is it ok to kill people with a business?
I imagine a lot of CEOs of filthy companies are going to start being a lot more vigilant now.
Or...perhaps they'll change their tunes and start shifting their policies, enabling the middle class to finally- nah, they'd rather ride with Death and see what happens.
Was at a conference with three executives and one of them said they had to travel with security this was before this even happened. Not it wasn’t insurance .
So where can I find the guidelines about when cold-blooded murder is to be celebrated? Shouldn't Trump's assassination have qualified, considering all the COVID deaths he caused? And what about money, how does that factor in? Thanks!!
yes, he was a capitalist. But it was not for being a capitalist that he was killed. It was for being an ABSOLUTE scumbag even among the worst capitalists - in a critical service that thousands relied on. People celebrating aren't doing so because a capitalist was murdered, but because THIS one was.
You kill someone with a bullet, knife, etc, you go to jail for life, or worse.
Kill hundreds with a spreadsheet, and you get a pension and a multi-million dollar penthouse.
Oh he wasn't your run of the mill capitalist. He got wealthy on the backs of the infirmed. He made money off of people's suffering and misery. I didn't bat an eye when I heard the news.
Like Patagonia, Ben & Jerry's, Warby Parker, Tom's, Seventh Generation, REI, etc. Capitalists and capitalism aren't inherently evil. But in any system, evil people with leverage it for their own benefit.
You read the article right? Every word, right? Also, you're looking for perfection and you won't find it on planet earth. But carry on. We can agree to disagree.
That's a ridiculous reply. A confectioner doesn't make money off pain and misery. Neither does a baker, wine maker, etc. There are thousands of capitalists, people who sell products in a capitalistic marketplace, that bring joy and fulfillment. There are always bad ones. But not all.
That's not the discussion. The comment was all capitalists make money off people's suffering. That's judgmental and frankly quite shallow, in my view. Also academic and somewhat removed from reality. Again, my personal view.
Woah. I totally get being incensed and enraged about the fact that so many of our fellow countrymen continue to suffer because of the practices of this man’s company, their cohorts, and those in other industries similarly aligned with his power. But a human being died. A human being died.
I don't understand what you're trying to say. Do you think a cruel meatbag existing is inherently a good thing?
I'm not in favour of murder, things could get very messy if everyone started deciding for themselves who gets to live, but why should people feel sad about a bad person disappearing?
I haven't been alive for 200 years, and as long as I have been alive I have not been in a swing state. I've done my part, but the system is designed in such a way that "my part" is functionally irrelevant.
Doesn’t right the fact he was murdered. Murder is murder. What confounds me is how the raw animus dictates the thought processes for some. It’s truly bizarre.
When the polite and civilized methods of protest are systemically ignored, the only remaining outlet for the rage and suffering men like him inflict upon the world is violence. He is the champion of a system that slaughters thousands. He got what he earned.
Good friends of mine have lost parents due to the insurance industry's greed. If you don't understand why that might make someone a skosh hateful, you don't have the brainpower to participate in any political conversation.
I understand your position. We’ve ALL been negatively impacted by the disgusting practices of our healthcare system. My entire family is in healthcare, and they deplore this system on a daily basis. I have a degree in PUBLIC POLICY and a masters in Infrastructure Planning, both steeped in politics.
So, I’m probably a tad more qualified to comment on this topic than you, but I digress. THERE IS NO ACCEPTABLE SCENARIO WHERE MURDER CAN BE CONDONED. This isn’t political discourse. It’s called being a decent human being.🤷🏻♂️
exactly, if your job is to have the power to save people whether through medical expertise or funding, and then you dont save people, then you're using your position to actively avoid saving people, which is the same as killing them yourself.
put plainly, what you're saying is like a villain in a story telling the hero, who has never murdered anyone, that if he murders him, the villain, then the hero will be just like the villain, who murdered hundreds of thousands. it's a ridiculous comparison. some people just have -karma and get it.
A human being died, yes. A human being who actively chose to enact company practices to condemn hundreds of thousands of other people to death, disability, and abject poverty so that he & a small group of others could profit off of suffering.
The whole thing is a tragedy. It's a tragedy that this callous and unjust corporate system was allowed to be built & continue to exist. It's a tragedy it did so much harm that it eventually drove someone to murder.
Justice was needed long before the shooter got his hands on a gun.
He profited off of EVERYONE. Thats how insurance works. It's a part of the design. Realisically its not as much on him as people use to justify cruelty and actual malice.
What is known is smaller than would justify his murder or blind hate, but it turns out people are actually terrible at dealing with anything at all with moral integrity. Not saying that the guy is great, but people will use any excuse to be trash to each other and it's thematic and hypocritical.
He and his organization denied coverage to sick children, the handicapped, the elderly and so on. They did everything they could to worm their way out of obligations, doing their best to stall in the hope the patient would succumb before they HAD to pay.
Thats litterally every insurance company. They are all factually shit. Thats the thing about insurance. It's not based on who needs it, its based on the fact people need it regardless of who. Any function to the contrary is accidental. The damage of privatized insurance, and law to entrench us.
You seem oblivious to the fact that the dude was stalked and murdered. I guess that's ok now. Have fun with that. Let's have a legal purge day of anyone we don't like for whatever reason!
I have been unjustifiably rude to a great MANY bill collectors in my life. Also, I made my son do the dishes last night so he DEFINITELY thinks I'm an asshole.
Not particularly Capitalist, is it. If by liking one economic system you commit yourself to moving where the government pays the most lip service to it, as you say, you gotta move to Argentina
People support armed action against a state that has been actively murdering, torturing and raping them for seventy years?
Utterly unsurprising.
Nothing hypocritical about being against mass murder whether it's a CEO or Israel committing it, you genocidal rapist piece of shit (per your argument XD)
Finally someone was "Cancelled" who legit was one of the 100 people/big companies that make the world a legit 💩tier place just to get a tiny bit richer. Hope someone acquits if he's caught and on trial. Real "Social Justice" for a change.
Nah, we ain't laughing away murder. We are laughing with murder. Now what do you propose about these ceos who are above the law? Nothing else has worked or even will be attempted.
Well if you just kill them, they will just spend more money on the protection of their executives so there will be even less money for reimbursements. But may I add that we don’t have this probleme in the EU, so maybe there is something wrong with your regulation.
like i think the idea that there is a stark, binary right and wrong division here is part of the problem people have with this. That doesnt exist, we just have a spectrum of increasingly right or wrong behavior and it changes based on circumstances.
you dont have to be morally conflicted about justice being meted out by a non-state entity. Is it ideal? No. Is it significantly better than what we've been living with for decades? Absolutely. Go forth unconflicted and happier.
he got caught in or around 2012 embezzling hundreds of Billions in Medicare & Medicaid money from Kansas under Buster Brown stain. Yet they are still a preferred provider! Brownback admin cut a deal to keep millions in Kansas from getting coverage. People died waiting for Help!
Acting in such an inhuman manner that one dehumanises *oneself* in the public eye is a very ancient version of "Fuck Around and Find Out" played mostly by the rich and powerful.
Wrong
There are times when murder is absolutely justifiable.
Murders, rapists, pedos, self defense, etc.
Was this guy's murder justifiable?
Yes and no.
I'm not sad he got shot. He kept 1000's of people from living.
Fuck. Him.
And guess we should have been the bigger person and tut tutted at the Pinkertons who killed union workers. And the racists who killed black people during the fight for rights. And the Nazis as they burned people
Because being the bigger person always makes bad guys stop, obviously
Meeting the world's worst people with force is the only thing that's gonna get us through the next four years. Learn to unclutch those pearls if you want to survive.
I was smiling too...it didn't take a genius to figure out why this guy was targeted and shot. I mean people, come on, wake up! They are killing us. I am not surprised someone decided to kill them back.
Are you a victim of a CEO?Are you sick of working yourself to death while others enrich themselves from your misery? Then you should try,CEO GO!(r).Yes,CEO GO!(r),a brand new product designed to remove life threatening parasites.Just point, click and voila!CEO GONE!Easy, free and fun.Get yours today.
"No Obamacare?” an attendee asked Johnson, “No Obamacare,” Johnson responded, rolling his eyes. “The ACA is so deeply ingrained, we need massive reform to make this work, and we got a lot of ideas on how to do that.” while chuckling at press.
I hate to be that guy but this is Joker’s Monologue from his movie. Down to the letter. The thousands he walked over to get his money were ignored but when this bastard died, suddenly everyone gives a shit.
I mean.. yeah? Isn't that the whole point of that Joker? That he was a very sympathetic character who was pushed to the edge in a way many people can find relatable?
He personally only profited about $9,000,000 a year. Not a bad wage to willingly let as many people die as possible.
If you break that into bi-weekly paychecks that’s only $346,153 a check. How is anyone expected to live on that?!?!
In America, over 60,000 people die annually because they can't afford to see a doctor. 1 in 4 cancer patients go bankrupt or lose their home. I myself personally know someone that died at 25 years old from untreated testicular cancer because he was afraid to go to a doctor until it was too late.
Unfortunately, it's not much better in Germany. We have universal health care, but they don't pay everything. So if you have a chronic condition or cancer, you're still financially screwed. Speaking from personal experience.
It also opens up so much opportunity for other pseudoscience and health grifters to profit off desperate people willing to try any snake oil they can get if it's more affordable than proper healthcare
Structured colloidal silver and weed aren't snake oil.... I've been taking a concoction of things that have been helping me... Because I cannot trust the racist doctors here.....
Did I say anything about structured colloidal silver and weed in particular? There is a shit tonne of examples of snake oil and unethical "health advice" to choose from
Some people will say those things are without doing their research. Because they are 2 things doctors don't usually prescribe.... To the point where I spend 74 bucks for a gallon of it and I can't claim it for medical expenses on my food stamps form...
Seeing as you decided to bring it up, the weed might have its medicinal uses, but doesn't take much research through medical websites to find the silver colloidal seems pretty dubious

But at the same time, I get why some people are unable to contain their excitement.
Complicate government is a much more accurate term.
If it was myself given that book, I now understand how to use it.
Why don’t I just staple the entire list right into this cute little “Death Note” book I found in the park?
The simpsons did a parody of it called Death Tome, and Lisa used it far better than Light did.
And that poor blood-stained sidewalk is probably traumatized for life.
Even they didn't care.
You can't see the bands of cash sticking out of and bulging his suit.
I’m a giver too !
All the posts that are like, "don't celebrate murder" are like that.
Insurers will still be for-profit ghouls profiting from the suffering and the death of those who MUST carry health insurance or be fined.
That is how we decided to solve this instead of serving the insured. Because that is “socialist”. Oh no!
in your post, or your title, i can honestly say , i have ZERO clue as to what this is referencing. 🤷🏻♂️
When I read my husband the news report, his sole comment was 'you don't get that kind of job unless you're a bastard'.
(My husband has spent the last five years working in NHS finance.)

This is par for the course in US "health" care.
You want empathy for Thompson? Look in a dictionary between emaciated and emphysema.
…I understand it
Law ain't gonna do it
The capital class demands blood and consequences and they’ll get it, good and gory; no matter whose blood it is, they’ll grin and stare.
In a system where everyone has access to care, the profit is to be found in providing a better, nicer version than the standard.
In a system where only a few have access, profit is found in keeping that access limited.
And probably still react the same.
Anyway, yeah, violence never solves anything.
Do not underestimate the desperation of someone who has paid for insurance their entire life only to be screwed over on a technicality
Violence is the last resort of the desperate
the only thing that really drives out an authoritarian is another
Really?
So, yeah, we tried it their way. Now we do it the HARD WAY.
Don't sit there voting for the same cretins year after year and expect things to be different though.
Just saying: if money is protected speech, bullets are too.
But I get it, you have tweets to post and shit to chat, and there's just no time to sort out your society.
People are dying while waiting on Dems to actually do something when they're in power.
😁
Bro just KNOCKED OFF an asshole who screwed MILLIONS of ppl and Posted up @ starbucks CHILLIN!!!
He had to do this Intentionally
Homie is a Pro Hitman!!
Also, big main character energy.
Its horrible that it had to come to THIS for them to do whats RIGHT!!!!

Did that make national news, or is this the first time you've heard?
The oligarchs of America don't care how many kids die.
When they are suddenly being targeted though...
We won’t bash down the doors and pull them out though.
We pour concrete over the doors, cut their power, and let them live in the dark hovels for a change.

Monsters push until they are punished. Trans, gays, blacks, women, the disabled, etc. get murdered by MAGA and other alt right all the time now. Why would they stop if people keep not fighting back?
It's not that killing is good, it's that it's a necessary evil to stop bad actors who don't care about morality
You I suppose.
One of many starts to union-type action that the Pinkertons tried to break
...I may have been working to foul their profile so they can't be sold off later
Please forgive me anger...
🤔
Hopefully his replacement acts better.
You lack principles.
History classes leave this out as people would realize that peace without the threat of violence can be ignored by the elite
You lack self respect.
Frankly he should feel blessed he was directly targeted instead of his family members.
Any of them that profits 1 cent while denying any medically necessary procedure or medication as determined by a doctor.
His replacement might feel fear, if not we can keep replacing.
And if you lived under it you'd agree
He outright told the king, reform or revolution, those are the options.

The justice system is going to be weaponized against dissenters anyway, right?
Might as well go out swinging.
This one was spot on
You kill someone with a bullet, knife, etc, you go to jail for life, or worse.
Kill hundreds with a spreadsheet, and you get a pension and a multi-million dollar penthouse.
But sometimes, every once in a while, it AINT.
I'm not in favour of murder, things could get very messy if everyone started deciding for themselves who gets to live, but why should people feel sad about a bad person disappearing?
Justice was needed long before the shooter got his hands on a gun.
Insurance is a terrible industry but it takes talent to be known as one of the worst companies in that sea of shit
He was in an incredibly dirty business.
And if the number of people who want to shoot me extends into the low millions? I'd definitely have to stop and think about where it all went wrong.
Not particularly Capitalist, is it. If by liking one economic system you commit yourself to moving where the government pays the most lip service to it, as you say, you gotta move to Argentina
He knew. He didn't care. He ate shit.
Doesn't mean he wasn't a mass murderer and you can't help but masturbate to his memory for some reason.
You're just an apologist.
Enjoy your hors d'oeuvres of rich guy shoe leather.
Utterly unsurprising.
Nothing hypocritical about being against mass murder whether it's a CEO or Israel committing it, you genocidal rapist piece of shit (per your argument XD)
Save it for legal ways to challenge Insurance firms un-warranted denial of coverage.
I don't see the personal tragedy either.
Then, I tend to be little favourable to mass murderers.
True justice would be if he suffered and died over and over again for each one of his victims.
Allowing bureaucracy to shield the higher ups is the reason they're never held accountable and can just budget for the fines they receive each year.
Especially when they know nobody will be held accountable.
If not, may I suggest:
Vigilante activist serves justice to one of the most prolific serial killers in history.
Very nice.
Any chance you'll consider that our Democrat-created tax and regulatory environment is playing a roll here?

When people die because the insurance company forbids life saving medical care, is that not murder?
When the law forbids a life saving abortion care, is that not murder?
The news media only reports when the rich are murdered.
