Brutalist architecture is a style that emphasizes construction materials and structural elements over decorative design. Brutalist buildings are often made of concrete and brick, and have an angular, mechanical appearance.
Like "Art Deco" and "Minimalism" it's an excuse why 20 of your 40 concept drawings for 8am ID studio are basically just 4 badly placed lines on a piece of paper that smells like natty ice, bong, and panic sweat.
In art history, it's a movement in modern architecture notable for heavy, blocky concrete construction, small windows, and a decidedly sculptural appearance. The FBI building in Washington, DC is an example.
If you know what it is, why don’t you generously educate people instead of baiting those who don’t know as much as you do about the fairly esoteric field study that is architecture?
Yeah my experience with this architecture is that it has a beautiful geometric flowing shape on the outside and then every floor on the inside feels like a basement
Honestly the architect doesn't deserve blame either way. "Form follows function" dominates the world at this point in time perhaps even more than Le Corbusier would've appreciated.
They do what they're asked to do until the client lets them stop doing it from the ground up 😅
I can agree that Brody is an excellent actor but this movie wasn’t. You can’t compare it with the Pianist and it absolutely dragged on and on without holding my attention for a minute. Brody elevates everything he touches, but this movie was boring. I tried to watch it but it was an hour too long.
I thought it was a fine film. One of Adrian’s best yet. I liked how much time they took to really dig into his character. The exposition of his life’s work at the end seemed a bit unnecessary though, explaining symbolism that had already been shown. Great film though.
It dragged on forever. I didn’t connect with the main character.
How can you say that in a world that contains The Pianist? The Pianist was brilliant and beautiful and the score wasn’t original but it was exceptional. Granted the story was written for them I was much more invested in his Szpilman
How can I say what? That The Brutalist is one of his best yet?
I don’t know, maybe because it is. And that “one of” clearly implies there is more than one, The pianist being the other. They are both exceptional films with outstanding work from Brody.
A style of architecture that represents the architects awful relationship with their mother: asymmetric, raw, hurtful & unfriendly, deliberately confusing & dark in power failures, noisy, leaks water through porous concrete that leaves permanent stains and failure of structure from frost wedging. ;)
It’s showing building materials in their “naked” nature, mostly concrete, but also steel, brick, cement blocks and glass. It showcases the structure, with no decorations on top.
I think that's what they call it when a bunch of people stab you, and you turn to your friend for help, and he stabs you too. Wait, no, that's Brutus-ism.
A very ugly aesthetic irl if done poorly, but very well done in fiction with totalitarian regimes. For irl examples, think Soviet housing buildings or Boston city hall. For fictional examples, think the Capitol from Hunger Games or Giedi Prime from the recent Dune movies.
FWIW UMD made me appreciate brutalist architecture in a semi-ironic, definitely notable way. Alma mater’s library was brutalist. College-ex’s dorm too, etc.
The Yale Art and Architecture building by Paul Rudolph would actually injure you if you weren’t careful: broken exposed concrete edges, inhuman scale on stairs
For unnamed reasons, I once had to hand deliver a job application to UMass Dartmouth on the evening of the deadline. It was dark & rainy; the insides of buildings were indistinguishable from the outsides. Plus, it’s got that flashing tower, which looks primed for deep space communication.
Brutalism is an architectural style that lasted from the 1950s to the 1970s, characterized by simple, block-like, hulking concrete structures. #googleknows
It’s a style of Architecture, lots of concrete, geometry. Think every civic building that isn’t trying to look Greek/Roman and isn’t just an office building.
The first one looks more like futurism (unconventional, machine-like shape) with constructivism influences (reducing building footprint by lifting it on pillars and buttresses, maximising light input by using vast glass surfaces)
Brutalism is a Workplace, Alleged Cursaroh Syndrome Gen Y disorder. They walk around with a piece of paper, complaining about other staff and their competence When confronted with their own incompetence go down with a fake, stress mental disorder. They are then subject toBrutal performance plan
It is the ugliest architecture style you have ever seen in your life. Like think of prison architecture, now think uglier. I don't mind the DC metro because the style lends itself to tunnels. But the buildings are awful.
Rebuilding after ww2 this architecture was designed to elevate the status of the common man using inexpensive materials left "raw" showing the workers' hand. It was called Béton Brut or raw concrete & le Corbusier hated the term "brutalism." I ♥️ its principles and forms. Beautiful and dramatic.
It's a school of architecture based around construction in moulded concrete which derived its name from the French 'Concret Brut' which translates roughly to 'Naked Concrete'.
Brutalism is an architectural style that mostly makes use of concrete, is very boxy and often has severe angles. It is supposed to be softened by extensive plants and trees.
It’s a fictitious school of architectural design which exists solely so people can achieve temporary gratification by replying, “Not brutalism,” to Facebook posts by strangers.
If you don’t hear from me again, you’ll know what’s happened. My concrete boots will be modernist.
Brutalism is an instant, it revives every creature in your graveyard and gives them trample for two turns or until the neighbors agree to knock down their Arts & Crafts Cape Cod style B&B in favor of a boxy multi-unit Airb&b made from shipping containers and hempcrete.
Ugly 60's buildings and parking lots in concrete. Called brutalism because it's unambiguously buildings and parking lots. Think "building" and chances are you'll imagine a brutalist building.
Brutalism is an architectural style characterized by minimalist construction; lack of decoration, angular geometric shapes, and mostly monochrome color pallets are common features of the style.
The Brutalist is a movie that explores the immigrant experience in the United States, the tension between art and commerce, and the promise of the American dream. It's also a meditation on the compromises artists make to survive in a capitalist system. The architecture itself is a plot vehicle.

Go.
It’s gulag architecture. The movie wasn’t good enough to win an award. Conclave deserves to win

Still, the Fine Arts Center was my brutalist favorite because *every* side looked like the back side. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63efca55d665af607b617748/1683665179720-VTSDM3KNEGFS27BOFAF1/Bromery-Center-for-the-Arts-UMASS-Amherst+%2811%29.jpg?format=2500w

Large blocky concrete buildings more or less designed to enclosed large social areas? Like in that newer Judge Dredd movie?
The concept had good ideas behind it, but the style fell flat as being kinda creepy and uninviting.
If you’re not sad or weirded out slightly, you’ve done it wrong
Or abusive social media.
I’m not kidding
I personally like the MCM metal (and sometimes mixed media) art and candleholders. 🤷♀️
There are plenty of well-known Danish brutalists, other countries probably have brutalists artists as well, I am just less familiar with them.

Bauhaus was a school of art.
Dali’s Car was Peter Murphy and Japan’s bass.
Dali was a surrealist artist.
The question is, who were the Bubblemen?
Habitat 67 is my favourite example
