On a positive note, that thread only showed up on my timeline because @kenklippenstein.bsky.social was replying with a GIF about how it sucks. A good portion of my Threads feed rn is the algorithm so thirsty to find a way to show me posts from Dane Cook that it does so like this:
By “I need Bluesky to succeed” I mean as the alternative to Threads, not as “the one new Twitter.” As someone else said, there were really two types of Twitter people. Some will do just fine on Threads. Some of us need hellthread. https://bsky.app/profile/waltisfrozen.bsky.social/post/3jzxpbgv47n22
I think it's also perfectly fine to use both for different reasons. A lot of accounts that relate to special interests of mine haven't moved here but are on Threads. I kind of like having different aspects of my life and personality available in different places.
I compared the 3 sites to music festivals for this reason. Some people love big music festivals, some of us just would like a more toned down vibe. Both are valid!
I've been using the OS example. At this rate, Bluesky is destined to be Linux of microblogging. Better experience, better product, but the comp is too big with too many built in advantages. But those that know, know.
I still hear people say Mastodon is confusing, and I really have no idea how it could be. It's not that difficult. You pick the server you want to create your account on and use it just like any other microblog network.
Naw, it’s the macOS of microblogging. Niche, neat, high barrier of entry, creativity run completely amok.
Mastodon is the Linux platform. Don’t believe me, go look at their top posts. Works on dang near anything, adored by microblogging enthusiasts and not much more
For ever i thought Dane Cook, Vince Vaughn, and Ryan Reynolds were just the same guy at different stages in his life and had to be repeatedly reminded i was wrong.
It hasn’t shown me Dane Cook but it did show me so many Gary Vee posts that I deleted the app and I feel like Gary Vee and Dane Cook have the same “that guy is still around? Why?” energy.
had a teacher in elementary school that as a special kind of punishment would make a delinquent kid sit on the floor and then the whole class would sit in a circle around them complimenting them to try to fix their bad behavior. i had it done to me once for crying in class. insane shit
The aggressive positivity schtick is going to end poorly, as anyone on left wing politics twitter in 2020/2021 could tell you
Some truly horrid people got soap boxes because of the indiscriminate support of some overly positive people
Ohhhhh noooo I just realized that it’s the real life version of that scene in Addams Family Values and now I kinda want to join to set up an elaborate Thanksgiving prank.
I saw someone on Threads today respond to a brand announcing "WE OUT HERE" by saying "Yay! You made it!" I like to think about this person cheering at her television during commercial breaks.
It took years for Facebook to devolve from cool college thing to your aunt sharing Minions memes. Threads launched as Live, Laugh, Love wall art you find near the checkout at Bed, Bath, & Beyond.
I ALREADY have too many people in my meatspace life who do not understand that sometimes I just need to vent, I don't need to be given advice on fixing things or, worse, be told "but other people have it WORSE than you, uwu!"
I would love to see it be easier to help people get in. I am no one special, but I want to get my friends on. But getting an invite code is like watching frozen molasses try to slide uphill.
I think that for people waiting, they are going to go elsewhere a d for that this platform will suffer.
I’ve just been through Threads with the mute button, starting with GB News. I agree, not sure I can do it either. I used to have a picture of a gremlin on my office wall with the caption ‘Harry failed his audition to be a Beanie Baby.’
Honestly, I feel like Threads is destined to be the global town square, which is a place cool people have never, ever congregated. The normies will have their T.G.I.Fridays while the interesting creative people hang at a local dive
Yes, this is accurate, and in a lot of ways this was the Facebook/Twitter dynamic for many years. I just hope the way everything is structured now *allows* for an app like Bluesky to find a different version of success as the alt Threads.
I'm encouraged by Meta's promise that Threads will federate with Mastodon. If that actually happens (granted, a big "if") and if interoperability issues w/ Bluesky can be worked out, I think we could get to a place where smaller, dedicated social networks have room to thrive.
I hope so too, but using Threads and being freshly reminded of how unaccountably sanitized Meta likes everything to be, I’m really curious how much interoperability they will even tolerate. But IF they do what they claim they want to, it has real potential.
What's the modern version of "I'll eat my hat"? Cause I would bet money that Meta never gets around to making the interoperability happen, or if it does, it will be neutered past any usefulness.
They can't even operate in Europe yet and Meta is banning Canadian news sources, I think Meta's need for user data will exceed any possibility of a "global town square"
If anything, the Muskopalypse has clarified for me what I need in a social media site. Hard news, public emergencies, and antifascist activity, with some weirdo humor and dogs thrown in. I do not care what dane cook or Ellen have to say.
Toxic positivity is so f_cking destructive! But try telling that to these #StepfordNazis... 🤦🤦🤦 "If we love-bomb them & they're crushed into compliance with our emotional colonialism, won't that be neat? LOL" 🤮🤮🤮
But what we CAN do is start a Bluesky Bummer Patrol, where we seek out people having a nice day and remind them about bad shit. If we roll in a little “better check your privilege” too it’ll feel just like Twitter engagement

I'm not planning to change that

Don't see where threads will see it's discourse flow. 😁

Bluesky is the mastodon of twitters.
There also needs to be a twitter of twitter for normal people who are not nazis to flee to.
