posting about bikes always gets the funniest carbrain responses. "bikes aren't inexpensive because expensive bikes exist, and also even the cheapest bike could be too much for a family in this economy" is a real take i got today.
"do you think everyone can afford cars?" and instantly i was blocked.

i have one very expensive bike. it is still cheaper than my mom's just purchased cheap used car. wtf even is this take lol
Well, I couldn’t transport my bike on my bike, but that’s beside the point.
I hope to move to a better place so i can have a motorcycle and ebike as my main transport...
- easy to throw in the back of my hatch or my spouse's miata (we live in a car centric area, so being able to drive to a parking spot downtown and then bike would be nice)
so really, just two reasons
I have also got a my track bike inside with me, but it was tight.
I bike that far in about 5 weeks.
also, considering the cost of owning a car in the US is like $10k/year on average, even if you get an expensive e-bike with all the bells and whistles, it's going to pay itself in a month or two
i used that thing to commute multiple times before i realized the whole frame was warped and it was causing the brake to rub but damn if it wasn't great for flying downhill
*spits*
or the office employees hauling ass on expensive heavy e-bikes. I'm constantly playing chicken with them on crosswalks, but it would be like getting hit by a motorcycle if I lost
an adequate bike will likely cost you less than $100
Lol. Lmao
I could have upgraded my bicycle for that to a low-cost pro model or an e-bike! we don't have the infrastructure to support such a change in lifestyle
if only more people rode bicycles and understood their benefits
I love my little rear view mirror, cycling without it feels kind of like driving half blind all of a sudden.
- a damn good lock
- fenders
- panniers
- rydesafe reflective stickers
- gloves
- full water resistant gear
- expensive ass prescription cycling sunglasses now that i think about it but at least i can just swap lens in the future
- i want the above but not sun too
I do need to get some all weather pants or at least something to keep my core warm. Few things worse than arriving with a mostly dry upper half but cold and drenched legs.
My bike cost £499 new in 1999. That’s £19 per annum. And it’s probably still worth £99 on gumtree, so £15 pa.
Try that with cars.
3 years of insurance alone would easily buy a decent ebike.
…look, i like bikes.
My van, new in 2023, depreciated by £11k.
The running cost of the bikes is peanuts relative to the van.
And tbh, I really wish I could sell the van. Most of the time I need it like a hole in the head.
If you're really tight on cash, talk to your local bike coop. Odds are they'll be able to hook you up with something that'll get you down the road for real cheap. Some even have volunteer work for bike deals.
I mean don't get me wrong, I enjoy some aspects of cars. (And I love motorcycles.) But the insistence we build our lives and our society around them, that we utterly sacrifice the urban commons for them, never stops astonishing and disappointing me.
At the time, the main form of transportation for my car-less ass was bikeshare (~$100/yr for free rides of up to 30 mins).
I ain't leaving it locked outside out of my sight
...by stating relevant facts about Rod Blagojevich.
Some people on Bluesky can't handle truth or logic.
The anti-bike crowd is particularly hostile to opposing views.
Serious bike-friendly measures improve car traffic. It's not zero-sum.
Oh and my commute time became 10 mins instead of 30 in the car.
i genuinely don’t know how people afford gasoline.
altho now that i think about it, i buy a lot more yarn and nice clothes for myself these days…
a cheap ass bike brand new is less than 100 bucks. A used one is almost guaranteed to be less than 50.
