Mind boggling that a murder in midtown Manhattan - probably the most heavily surveilled public place in the country other than DC - can’t be solved by a police department with a $5.6 billion budget

Aye man, no need being so uncharitable. Cops are awesome at solving murders as long as the culprit’s victim is a family member or business associate killed for life insurance
I mean they had 4 years to get Trump for insurrection and stealing classified documents and had the power of the federal government and they didn't get him. So, yeah, I'm not surprised.
The CEO's colleagues literally walked near the scene of the crime to continue their meeting about investors and shareholder value. I would not expect such a group to offer an award or care.
Mind boggling that a person who’s known only from partial face surveillance photos can hide for several days in a country of over 350 million people, or a city of over 8 million.of
It’s almost like cops serve no porpoise and don’t belong in our society. They’re are only there to protect property. The property that is the capital they serve. They exist also to reinforce poverty and disallow upward mobility by the poors. #acab
If I have learned nothing from reality tv, and indeed I have not, it is this:
"For homicide detectives, the clock starts ticking the moment they are called. Their chance of solving a murder is cut in half if they don't get a lead within the first 48 hours."
$5.4 billion of the budget is for candy crush subscriptions. Most of the rest is put towards tackling fare jumpers. There's nothing in the budget for "solving crimes".
In most murders that are solved, there's usually an immediate suspect. "Unsubs" are typically never caught. Sometimes serial killers are caught decades later because they tend to collect things from their victims or because there was DNA left at the crime scene.
Most criminals, they say, are pretty dumb and that’s how they get caught. This guy was not dumb. And 5.6 billion seems about right since we like to throw money at problems - kinda like failing up.
Kinda ok about it, sad but true.
Rich people don't care about any of us.
They want us to stay the struggling horde who can't fight back because we're all stuck on a rusty hamster wheel they've created. It's to the point that we'll never be able to escape.
policing needs more detectives who actually solve crimes and less divorced guys who failed out of community college harassing people who work for a living but that's just me
it’s extremely funny to watch the NYPD scramble to attempt to solve a murder because for once the victim was the one type of person who’s actually capable of holding them accountable
Depends, if NYPD cops have United insurance, maybe not so mind boggling. They literally deny 1/3 of claims. My wife is a physician and she knows at least 4 other physicians in private practices that won’t take United covered patients at all because they are so dodgy.
I expect this will be used to justify more cameras in public places with facial recognition tech. Then maybe even pave the path to share/sell that data with advertisers for revenue.
It was stated today by an investigator being interviewed to remember that there could be more success than reported publicly, in large part because they are building a legal case to prosecute successfully at the same time… seems likely as well, no?
its a good thing.
an even better thing would be 4.6 billion of that $ going to libraries, schools, parks, and people, so there would be even less cops not doing anything.
I saw an NYPD officer pulling a stroller out of his police van while blocking up a lane of traffic and I had no idea stroller delivery was one of their services. Very convenient for parents on the go.
-to this day I have no idea what they were actually doing.
Well, give it some reasonable amount of time. That said, if the guy got out of town, has no criminal record to match prints or DNA, used cash and fake ID, and likely sorting through thousands of "I recognize that guy" tips that don't pan out, it may take a while.
It took them 3 days to find a backpack within walking distance of the scene in an area that they had already searched. They are terrible at their jobs.
They have a face, details of all his movements. Probable DNA or fingerprints in 24 hours...he isn't in the city...I guess that's not good enough for you?
Cops in NYC started quiet quit working about 15 years ago. They really quit working in the de Blasio and covid Era and haven't bothered since they are the Praetorian Guards now, only bribed by mayors,
Walking around nyc, though, it’s not that mind boggling to imagine just disappearing…into the crowd, around the corner, into a building, a bathroom in a coffee shop, a line for tickets or a show, down subway, in park, onto a bike, into a car, with a dog. There are a lot of ppl & a lot going on
The median homicide case in the United States is never even solved, let alone prosecuted. The purpose of police is only to enforce the law insofar as it's convenient for them to do so; their real purpose is counterinsurgency.
I doubt that, but I think their best lead is getting some DNA off his water bottle or from something in his backpack and finding his nearest relatives on 23 and me. That might take a week or more.
It’s not about the police, money or the power. Even though they cream their jeans because of it. It’s about morality 👅 and creating an atmosphere of chaos and collapse so that the savior can swoop in and save America on January 20th 2025.

Same coat, same hood, same black mask under their chin. Honestly, you are the only person I've seen saying they're different people. It will be interesting to see if you were right. Reuters is reporting that he's actually been identified, but based on the word of Eric Adams, so...
Are you forgetting that the shooter fled on a bicycle? The police are helpless to overcome such a technological advantage. The obviously need more funding.
i heard he upgraded from a bike to a bus, arguably the slowest way to escape by motor vehicle. tough to say you're beating a hasty retreat when you can stop every 15 minutes for a slim jim and a diet pepsi.
Yeah. In the Healthcare industry we call it "going to the dark side." Most UR personnel that work for insurance are nurses that have been underpaid and insurance companies pay nurses 20%-30% more than, say, hospitals.

That's my take, anyway.
Toronto Police: 🤷🏻♂️

If FBI and ATF aren't replaced by high school football players and benzoed PTSD Marines next year, they'll catch the responsible party eventually
This dude killed in broad daylight and nothing.
The Nigerian prince was probably legit and we could have been friends.
I think it's more about beating random civilians and parking where they want

Stop making me defend cops.

He also left a water bottle and candy wrapper.
This guy is like DB Cooper
I love the terror that every elite in the world must feel knowing that they could get smoked in Midtown and the cops will bungle their vengeance.
I'm shocked.

I seriously doubt _anyone_ is gonna give up Agent 47.
