That explains why I didn't know about it. I haven't eaten there in, well, a long time. It was good pizza, and I'm happy to hear how the business has evolved over time. We need many more worker owned businesses! Thanks for all the info!
My favorite request when slinging Brooklyn style pizza in CA.
“YOU WANT WHAT? Don’t you know how to eat pizza?”
Runners up:
“PINEAPPLE AND WHAT? “
“Did you just seriously ask for whole wheat?”
In the early 90’s, right before Hot Pockets, my dad would buy me these bagel-sized pizzas that I would microwave that were that sort of awful and delicious only a teen can love. I can taste those looking at this.
Wow this is the first time I've gotten in on the ground floor of a Gail!troll. Hello everyone. Watch the Untamed on Netflix. Patronize your local community theaters.
Looks like quite a nice tomato soup tart, but it's definitely stretching the definition to call it "pizza". I mean, where would you even PUT the pineapple on that???
Excuse me, that is not NY style pizza. I grew up in that area, and our pizzas are all thin-crust. I think you have accidentally posted a Chicago-style pizza.
Let me clue you up about something. Professional women like myself often have to work twice as hard for their accomplishments as the equivalent men. So 'what pizzeria did you get your doctorate' is not likely to go down well. Also, sarcasm and wit don't necessarily register in the written word.
Is it a good or a bad sign that I get this joke (or is it a declaration of war)? As a European that has never even tasted a slice of Deep Dish Chicago-style Pizza.
"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out, 'Well, actually...'. I fear Gail Simone has done something hilarious again."
Hah, your trolling has been defeated by the fact that I'm British, and therefore genuinely have no idea which bit of America thinks that that is a pizza.
And don't underplay its influence on other cuisine! Canadians were inspired by NYC-style pizza to create a dish called quiche (now popular in many countries but yet to catch on in Europe)
THAT'S a New York Pizza?!?
I thought New York Pizza was a floppy thin crust you had to fold in half before eating; a calzone with extra steps. That looks like a personal size Chicago Deep Dish Pizza.
Gail is sure to leave some people “a noid” with this post; they’ll line up like “dominos” but be bowled over because she’s a “malevolent force of chaotic disruption”

We all know this is the only true NYC slice.
To go with my salmon cheesecake and California roll cheesecake…
(this is not a sponsored post!).
Zachary's Pizza has 5 locations in the East Bay. Owner retired & sold it to his staff.
Literally some of the best pizza in the country.
Business started in 1983. Transition to worker ownership began in 2003.
"Our CEO started as a dishwasher and recently celebrated his 39th year at Zachary’s"

It's oft best to call & order in advance, whether you're going to sit down or pick up—they get very busy.
I recommend trying the tomato-mushroom deep dish, with an optional pesto topping (pic above). It's a fantastic combo.
& like all great pizza, it's even better from the fridge on day 2!

This is not news to others, apparently https://time.com/4814056/hawaiian-pizza-pineapple-sam-panopoulos-death/

STOP!
(I lived in Chicago for three years, am fully expecting angry people from two time zones)
New York, Chicago or Italy?
I won't.
I won't.
I won't.
I won't.
I won't.
I won't.
Damnit, Gail.
It's the original Italian way.

Crunchy crust is life!
