This was a central plot point in the excellent “Fargo” season 5. North Dakota “constitutional sheriff” Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm) uses his unchecked power to apply for grants of military weapons, which he then provides to a local militia group.
We got the police resistance to "defund the police" all wrong. It wasn't because they were afraid of losing their legal salaries, it was because it would cut into their ability to make money doing crimes! It makes a lot more sense now
One of my friends used to sell weed. He got pulled over one night for literally nothing, and the cop told him if he didnt wanna go to jail to give him all the weed in the car. He did, and that doughnut hole took the weed two streets over and started selling it himself.
"A CBS News investigation found dozens of law enforcement leaders — sheriffs, captains, lieutenants, chiefs of police — buying and illegally selling firearms, even weapons of war, across 23 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C."
The police as a revenue generating part of our government, giving out restricted firearms is just a business investment. More crime, more arrests, more $ for the prison industrial
Thought it was gonna go the path of "They were running a far right militia" or something but it's not as bad as i thought, they just sell it to other farright militias
Absolutely insane sentence. I know a kid that got a five year federal sentence on a gun charge because he had a gun in his home during a weed transaction with a narc.
The whole story paints a picture of the catastrophic collapse of arms regulation in the USA. The police chief in his remarks to the judge confirm how widespread the problem really is.
Setting aside all the other absurdity, it's pretty hilarious that a cop in an 800 person Iowa town believes he's got his finger on the pulse of every police department across the country
I honestly have no idea if he's right or wrong. I imagine he's right because cops generally suck, but it's wonderful that this redneck from a town whose entire population is less than 10% of the number of cops in LA is gonna end up putting them all under the microscope for this
1) This guy is probably right that a lot of cops do this.
2) Thieves, like most unethical actors, deceive themselves into believing that many, most or all people are unethical, and that helps them justify their own behavior. This is of course, not true.
in any other world, stealing $100 million in guns and ammunition from the government would be game over and your organization would be disarmed, if not entirely shut down
media will run a story of SNAP lobsters every night on the news, but bury $100 million gun running scheme defrauding the government because its ICE and not a brown person
And the right will all accuse Ukraine of embezzling aid money and selling weapons for profit without any proof, but this here is a big nothing burger not worth talking about.
But those people on Medicare and SNAP are the ones truly abusing the system. Grandma needs to pull herself up by the bootstraps but the Air Force can have a fighter jet that is $180B overbudget and that doesn't matter at all.
It gets more loco: “[another LEO] later pleaded guilty. He served less than a year in federal prison and paid a $10,000 fine but was allowed to keep his Porsche and Alfa Romeo.” Then there’s the supersonic bullets…
Supersonic bullets? Virtually all rifle ammunition is supersonic; you have to buy special (expensive) ammunition to get subsonic rounds, mostly for target shooting (I use subsonic ammunition for biathlon.)
from CBS News: “Many [ATF Class III/Title II weapons] are battlefield weapons used by U.S. and NATO forces in conflict zones… These guns can spew hundreds of rounds each minute, faster than the speed of sound.”
Comparing a rate of fire to a velocity is… a choice. One that makes no sense whatsoever. Journalists please learn something about basic units of measure challenge: impossible.
Is he implying that this is a widespread phenomenon? I think there needs to be an investigation. How many of those pew pews changed hands again and ended up in Mexico?
This shouldn't surprise anyone. You have civil asset forfeiture. Your cops can accuse your stuff of crimes and take it. Especially cash. You have to sue to prove its innocence and maybe get it back. Seriously, fucking mental
They have been arming the nation and are preparing a purge. Like Ruwanda but with AR15s and several media outlets to push the narrative. Ruwanda was a test run.
"Wendt now faces up to five years in prison on the conspiracy count, five years in prison for each of the eight false-statement charges, and up to 10 years’ prison for illegal possession of a machine gun. Sentencing is scheduled for July 1."
All our police and armed forces are heavily involved into gun trafficking.
We also have trouble with "hunting" arms permits (CAC), which after a ruling during Bolsonaro's term are being even less restricted and it is arming both organized crime and politically motivated citizens.
“We're not looking to prosecute fellow law enforcement officers," said Eric Harden, former special agent in charge of the ATF's Los Angeles field division.
"insane" is accurate and also understatement. I can't get over how well-known but largely ignored is the pervasiveness of LEO's selling illegal guns for personal profit. Some stunning article excerpts posted below. Audits? Charges? Nah.
In America there really is a gun behind every blade of grass.
It is not just 5 years total he is facing for jail time
"Wendt now faces up to five years in prison on the conspiracy count, five years in prison for each of the eight false-statement charges, and up to 10 years’ prison for illegal possession of a machine gun. Sentencing is scheduled for July 1."
"Nearly 26,000 guns were traced from American crime scenes back to a government agency, law enforcement or the military between 2017 and 2021, the most recently available data, according to a report by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives." Bonkers
'Defund the Police' was admittedly too general. But when one sees this - talk about abuse of power and position. how did he only get only 5 years? Can we trace those guns to see if any were/are/will be used in crimes or mass shootings?
I dated the daughter of a cop who was fired from Phoenix PD- for buying 3x Steyr AUG rifles using police letterhead.
IN 1993. This has been a problem for a long time.
Nearly 600,000 firearms are trafficked into Mexico from the United States annually. Seventy to ninety percent of the guns recovered at crime scenes in Mexico come from the U.S.
US law enforcement, at all levels, knowingly aid and abet this weapons trafficking.
Also, every time someone wrings their hands and clutches their pearls about Mexican or Colombian cartels, ask yourself:
How come no one mentions the _American_ cartels?
Who distributes the drugs from the entry point in the US to every alley and college campus in North America? Who protects them?
And their LEO jobs allow (or used to at least) them to OK purchase of fully automatic weapons. I wrote about a Tulsa sheriff years ago handing machine gun approvals out to rich friends.
Yes, it's the only way to get fully-automatic weapons right now, through an LEO purchase. (But you can somehow resell or gift them? It makes no sense.)
LEO Agencies can acquire these post 1986 weapons, but cannot sell them to anyone.
There is still a market for pre 1986 FA weapons. Private citizens can buy them through special dealers and after being vetted by the BATF. Very expensive as the supply is limited.
Some counties require county sherrif sign-off on full auto weapons, for individual ownership but then there can be different rules for corporate purchases.
Sure they can, if all that's stopping them are alleged laws.
"'We're not looking to prosecute fellow law enforcement officers,' said Eric Harden, former special agent in charge of the ATF's Los Angeles field division."
Three man Iowa dept police chief is gun running on the taxpayers' dime. Ninety machine guns, the M 134 might've been over the top. Oh, those corn farmers won't know the difference.
Wow. My brother-in-law is a small town cop (and a MAGA dickhead). He does gun sales on the side. I have wondered in the past how they can afford cruises, overseas vacations, additions to their house because I’m sure his little department doesn’t pay that much. Probably does this on a smaller scale.
An investigation conducted by CBS News gives weight to Wendt’s hyperbolic statement. The outlet uncovered dozens of law enforcement leaders buying and illegally selling firearms, including weapons of war, across 23 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C.
Now this is very concerning, if police departments around the country do this. Who are they selling to? How much of the weapons are they keeping for themselves? For what purpose?
Comments
Gattling guns are warranted.
wtaf?
Don’t threaten me with a good time.
cops used to know that the more weapons on the street, the less safe they were.
k, that sounds like a good start. Let's do that.
I mean we say "howdy" a lot more, I guess.
[columbo pause and spin]
WHAT THE FUCK?
Great job security measure.
This guy doesn't strike me as a reliable narrator, but... how widespread *is* this?
In an explosive story, #CBS reports that the problem is the police, not #guns.
#endgunviolence #commonsenseguncontrol
Yeah, sounds good, go on, Chief.
C'mon CBS, details please! A chart, even.
WTF do they even need that shit for? They're in the middle of NOWHERE.
The defense of "Well others did it too..."
How many times has anyone gotten out of a speeding ticket by saying, "Well the car in front of me was speeding too so it doesn't count."
Fuck that guy.

Okay.
How are we not surprised?
2) Thieves, like most unethical actors, deceive themselves into believing that many, most or all people are unethical, and that helps them justify their own behavior. This is of course, not true.
2) get him to order a fully automatic machine gun
3) pay him 8x what he paid for it and buy it off of him
4) shoot hogs
Apparently this shit is legal...
This is the future that liberals want.

All cops mean ALL cops.

“Educate, not investigate” my ass.
The number of small town police depts with Chargers and other insane cars/guns is insane.
You have 500 people who live here. wtf you need all that for? 🤣
I accept your terms.
Straight up arms dealing.
Socializing the costs, privatizing the free moneyyyy
I might have reached my grossed-out limit for the day

Do they call that the J6 rule?
sounds good
These new season trailers are good.. 🍿😏
