Another GenX fave. Also, no, parents often did not, and they weren't particularly worried. If something bad happened, the cops would show up and tell them.
For the record, I was usually in the arcade room of the local pizza place, playing Tempest and listening to "Tom Sawyer."

I hated this snitch.
I want my money back

My mom got visits from police, telling them where my older brothers were. Once, when my brother Peter ended his life, and again, when my brother Daniel ended his life.

Parental neglect doesn't always work out well.

I did get pretty good at Tempest, so there's that!
I grew up about 80miles from the beach. After 15/16 or so a co-ed pack of classmates and I would tell our parents we’re going to the beach for the day, then to eat and to see a movie and would be back late.
A) They let us go!
B) That is in fact what we actually DID!
We came back in time for graduation.
PSAs in the UK were a paper cut out animated cat warning a similar constructed “boy” not to go and see the puppies.
Charlay the cat warned us that “Any gender can be preyed upon.”
“Charlay said…”
FINISH HIM
“Come on join the crowd!”
FATALITY
“Shout it out loud!”

I LOVED THAT GAME!
Side discussion: was discussing when this culture changed, and my theory is the Jacob Wetterling case - slacker parents became helicopter parents overnight!
I made it to avenger avenger warrior! #rush #tomsawyer #movingpictures also listening!

It was a very different time though. Pre-teen me would go downtown all by my lonesome on the bus/subway and just walk the streets without a care in the world.
A very good time.
Whenever I'm in an arcade, I go hunting for it.
Which is how I actually got forgotten and left behind when our family went on vacation one year.
(They eventually noticed and came back for me. I hadn't noticed they were gone.)
My parents also didn't divorce in the '80s, either.
Crazy!
Of course I was 14 the first time they took off…they never knew!
(I was mostly at home)
