Kinda misses the point IMHO — as a lot of America feels betrayed by the news media. It’s supposed to serve as the Fourth Estate — keeping democracy in check and holding the powerful accountable — not amplifying lies and propaganda.
I tried @ivanasstaircam.bsky.social Christmas boycott of social media and I did not want to come back on here. Made myself return because my family knew more about what was going on than I did. I can see why people tune it out. It is better for their individual sanity (short term). 🥺
Recover doomscroller here and can verify. Wouldn’t be surprised if everyone is just avoiding the news and waiting for this jackass to give himself a coronary from all that outrage he’s worked up.
News outlets’ purpose is sold as providing news. The real purpose is to make money. Those ideals do not coexist currently and they think we are too dumb to notice.
Read news reports, not opinion articles and 99% of tv news is opinion.
The 'news' people spend their time trying to put lipstick on a pig. Trump is still an amoral mob boss surrounded by grifters. They continually make excuses by saying 'the people' chose him. Says alot about those people, and none of it good. I only watch the first 5 min. get disgusted , turn it off.
Yes. That’s true… because we (as Democrats and progressives) can’t stand being reminded of our defeat, we’ve come to BlueSky to vent. But - hear me out - we need to support progressive media. We can’t let Fox or X or Sinclair win.
Man-up and watch MSNBC. Don’t let them get the better of you.
Exactly! My husband and I watched those two most nights but ever since the election neither of us has any interest. I keep wondering if/when I’ll go back but I don’t want to laugh at whatever dumb racist thing he’s done that day. I don’t want to hear about it at all. It’s not funny.
Exhausted with fascist enablers in corporate media. I’m seeking new sources but have definitely cut down on consuming news during the holidays. Inverse relationship to consuming alcohol.
Exhausting your ‘enemy’ is like the second to last chapter of the fascist playbook. On a positive note, the taxpayer-funded gulags cant possibly hold us all.
Haven’t listened to the news either. When Trump is in the Oval Office, it will be turned off for 4 years. I drove myself crazy when he was in office before. Was afraid to see what the idiot did during the night. ( He sure wasn’t being with the wife).
Same, & it worries me some. I did not watch cable news but now I consume almost no news. I am afraid we are putting our heads in the sand -- I am doing this too -- and it will somehow backfire on us. I hope we are just resting up. I do read the @theguardian.com but not the news (great book reviews).
Maybe not related but definitely contributing factor with newer cable boxes that shut off if no activity within the past 4 hours instead of being stuck on the same channel 24/7, even as the TV is off.
Yeah, us too. I am mentally exhausted, especially by the idiotic coverage. I thought The Emperor's New Clothes was a ridiculous story as a kid, and now the news are just... rolling with it.
I’m at “tell me which direction to point the trebuchet or STFU”. I don’t need to know the latest fascist shit these fascists pull unless there’s an action item besides me calling my elected officials & asking them to pwease do their jobs. Otherwise the meals don’t plan themselves.
I haven't either. I just can't. My heart is still broken and I can't take hearing anything about TFG. Not his voice, his picture, his name even. I can scroll by on BS and I do.
I’m not going back to legacy/corporate/MSM PERIOD. @cnn @velshimsnbc.bsky.social sanewashed Trump right back into office. And @morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social going to kiss the ring in FL was the absolute nail in the coffin for me
I've tuned out cable news, network news and even the Today Show in the morning. Instead I've been listening to music or streaming TV and movies. I've also ghosted my Trumper friends and family. I'm much calmer this way.
"Gude said, for example, that MSNBC will always have a hard-core audience of Trump haters. But if the network wants to expand its audience, “then you have to talk about issues, and you have to stop talking about Trump.”"
- Dangerous Wealth Inequality.
- Unavailability of sufficiently cheap housing.
- Costs of medical insurance.
- A legal system that is dysfunctional to a large degree.
And much much more.
What use is Government when it does not solve issues people can't solve on their own ?
Same. Especially since it’s mostly bad news now. Soon enough, we’ll have to start keeping track of what our “president” is trying to destroy next. Again.
I have not either, I truly hope the numbers are so great that they understand they lost our trust and the privilege to come into our homes with news if it's going to have an agenda.
I simply didn't want to hear any more bad takes. It's the same old horrifically wrong stuff. I'm done with it. I'm tired of Mika Brzezinski's pained expressions and Joe Scarborough's reminiscences about how Republicans once were so awesome. No they weren't. They've been terrible since forever.
I haven’t watched the news since the election. Since all the news outlets are owned by the billionaire class it’s all BS now,ALL of it. We will never get the truth in anything. How the fuck do we find out what’s really happening?
It's absolutely a lefty show, but they go into actual policy nuance and have really good interviews on topics with journalists and politicians go on there from time-to-time.
They put clips up from the show that airs live on their youtube.
Follow the workers and not the outlets - make note of every author of thoughtful reporting. Individual reporters all have social media now. Lots of them were not class traitors when employed by outlets and are still trying to do the right thing on their own post layoffs etc.
I disagree. Even following the thoughtful ones at the big corporations is just giving money to the billionaires. The thoughtful ones are still controlled by their rich masters. Search out independent sources. Foreign sources even (BBC, Guardian, CBC as examples)
That’s throwing the baby out with the bath water in a world with ad blockers and gift articles, and I also explicitly referenced laid off (and therefore independent) folks. 🙂
Missed the laid off. Then they would be covered by what I said about independents.
You cannot trust the writings of anyone working for these large media outlets. If it isn't the billionaire owner putting his finger on their words then they often hold back crucial facts for their upcoming book.
The Corporate Media Owners thinking is we will all come back after January 20th 2025 so they are not worried about changing anything...but I believe they're wrong bc I'm not going back to any cable news networks period idgaf what happens I will get my news from my local station.
Not much of a cable news watcher ever but I haven’t watched local or network evening news since the election either. I’m reading from trusted online sources for now. A friend is recording the evening local & network news & fast-forwarding thru the political stuff. I may try that in the New Year.
Haven’t watched any cable news Keeping it local and local newspapers Only read articles that do not begin with ‘Donald Trump’ There will be enough chaos coming, I don’t need to hear about it now!
Probably because the mainstream media can't get enough of Trump, and the people have had enough of him. Nothing he does is surprising or "news" anymore.
Same. Also the “news” is more often than not just (a) clips of out-of-context sound bites or reading some politicians’ tweet and (b) pundits spinning the sound bites/tweets. There is very little actual news reporting.
I haven't watched one second of cable news since the election either. Firing Joe Scarborough would be a great olive branch to past viewers if MSNBC wants us back, otherwise, fuck 'em.
I wonder whether that's a conscious or unconscious tactic by those chaos monkeys. Swamp us all in bullshit until we don't notice what they're trying to do?
Denial of service is typically accomplished by flooding the targeted machine or resource with superfluous requests in an attempt to overload systems and prevent some or all legitimate requests from being fulfilled.
The range of attacks varies widely, spanning from inundating a server with millions of requests to slow its performance, overwhelming a server with a substantial amount of invalid data, to submitting requests with an illegitimate IP address.
I haven’t followed the news in two months but I’m still aware of what is going on. Not sure if that makes sense, but day-to-day, chase every stick thrown of the porch, is NOT necessary.
Ratings and money is all they know, all they care about. Collectively we have the power to kill these networks by not watching/using/consuming them and letting them know, the question is do we have the will?
I think the article is getting it wrong about people going back.
I am done. For good.
I will read articles from sites I trust. Listen to podcasts and some of the streaming independent source.
For those who didn't RTFA, this happens every election. Whether it's worse this time remains to be seen. This is how fascism wins, so it's very concerning if people continue to be checked out. Hopefully they're just moving to other sources of news, not tuning out entirely.
I still read and follow the news, maybe not as close as I did before the election. I stepped away from Facebook and exited Twitter though. I got tired of people "justifying" their vote casting for the 🤡 and Twitter has turned into a "truth" clone with Phony Stark.
I noticed the PBS article managed to slip in a viewer who wanted a both sides news presentation. Exactly what we all complained about not wanting. Both sidesing is what has driven most away from msm.
I’ve not watched cable news since the election. But I’ve tuned in to YouTube channels like @thebulwark.bsky.social and @meidastouch.com and their respective creators. It’s not that I don’t want info, just not the corporate 🐂 💩
We're not exhausted, tuning out because we're done with the cable mandate to promote apologists, gas lighters, and MAGA ass lickers.
We clearly understand that the journalists are trying to protect their lifestyle and the Oligarch owners need to pay tribute to the Reich leaders, just in case.
I stopped watching cable news since the election, and even unfollowed them, and blocked them here. I have no interest in giving them ratings, much less profits for they are the worse of the worse in humanity.
I really want to stay informed, but cable news is just exhausting. It's not news, just a bunch of preening blowhards giving their most outrageous opinions. That or nothing but Republican mouthpieces.
I stopped when they ousted Biden. Came back with one foot in when Kamala Harris became the nominee. I am very confident that the ruse of this election victory will unfold very soon.
I wish I could share your confidence that the truth will out. The math ain’t mathing. Lots of it doesn’t make sense to me-never has (bomb threats from Russia, outside access source code, etc. that all “news” has ignored). To me, it felt more like what we’ve seen in Russian elections.
We are not governed by ideology. Instead, we are governed by greed. There are lots of people who know what happened. They will slowly release the information in form of book deals. The question is, what will those of us who are principled and care deeply for this country do about it?
I wish I knew. It’s a drag to be faced with a problem and no solution is even slightly apparent. We turned out and voted in 2020, and many of us voted for accountability for the crimes we all witnessed. What more can we do now? Our justice system let us down. We did our job and voted in 2024 and…?
I was desolate and dejected after the apparent loss. We organize and stay vigilant and fight with what we have—our voices. Black people in this country were a fraction of the population, yet they fought to be freed from slavery and for their civil rights. We can do this, together.
I also stopped watching. I read BBC for world news and started following local news sites. I hadn’t realized how much I was missing after WaPo stopped covering local news.
I was furious with how dishonest MSNBC and CNN were during the last two years. They were cheerleaders for a Democratic Party that was losing voters faster than a methead loses weight. There are facts the Democrats don't know how to handle, so they're simply not addressing them. Foolish.
I think it’s important to try to do the things you can to help protect democracy even if you do watch less news. Support @democracydocket.com and check out https://www.stopthecoup2025.org. What’s happening is too critical to just zone out
I’ve watched some, but so very limited. It feels like so much propaganda, from both sides, and not just telling me details of what is going on. Sometimes I just want to know what happened, I don’t want a doomsday clock countdown with it. And I surely don’t want a huzzah-Trump face on the TV. 😔
Dido. What does get through my newly imposed filters only justifies my self-extraction. Everything being reported is just so STUPID, and I am better for ignoring it!!!
Same. But I have been forcing myself back periodically. If there is such a thing as protecting left-leaning news anymore via viewership, it seems now is the time as some networks are vulnerable. Use it or lose it, I guess.
Wow, glad we aren't the only ones. Not one second of MSNBC has been viewed in our house since election night, after having it on basically every weeknight during dinner for a decade.
Same applies to most of the billionaire-owned MSM. And we don't miss it.
I blame them squarely for much of the election results. The attacks on Biden’s age, holding Kamala to impossible standards while sanewashing the crazy felon, bogus polling. Don’t trust them, Not watching.
I already know the script, so why watch? We already did this for 4 years last time. I’m not putting myself through that again. This next 4 years is an opportunity!
I've been 100% off all TV news/commentary since the election. I'm getting my news online so I can moderate how much political content I get on a daily basis.
Unless it's something of importance like trumps crimes are paused [ a possibility] I'm not interested . I'm not even watching my local news in my country. Anything of any importance will be on here. Winning is not everything, even in 2020. Still have idiots walking around us.
So hard when I don't believe any side will just 'report' or even present facts... I wonder if I'll ever trust mainstream media again, or even should. Take care, weary reader.
1. Well, I think we have to support them. I’ll watch.
MSNBC was to me the beacon of hope.
I never watched the morning show. Too much like mayer or rogan.
Ego heads.
Lawrence O’Donnell amazes me.
But it’s the presenters they bring in that we have to support.
The range of voices.
CNN helped trump.
2. We should not blame the media. That’s what trump wants us to do. Remember fake news?
It wasn’t fake.
But he convinced US to doubt journalists.
The person to blame is trump alone. The person who lied to America for a dozen years.
We have to support people who inform us.
Follow them. Thank them.
I think they’re trying to absolve themselves from the fallout of them bending the knee. Americans have flocked to this site bc they know they’re not getting played here by corporate media.
Cable news cannot be reliably separated from the self-interests of billionaire owners or fights for ratings. What they emphasize and how they talk about it are so far removed from what an informed public needs to know. It has no informational value, full stop.
Exactly the same for me. I just can’t right now. I’ve decided to emulate Trump voters for a bit: Consume little information and be ignorant. Only for now, though, not forever.
Same for me. I still read the news though and will remain engaged. I have many Dem friends who are so upset they are not even reading the news anymore. That’s not good
for the most part I only see what bubbles to the surface now (ie, the things lots of people are talking about) — but as the article said, many of us just need a break and will likely reengage
I get my Heather Cox Richardson email every morning, skim it, and move on with my day. No hyperbole. Just facts. No more Maddow or Morning Joe and Mika face palms and slamming the pen down in disgust.
If you look at the numbers no one was watching before either. The numbers should drop more as people open their eyes to know that Corporate media opinions are bought and sold to the highest bidder. Millionaire hosts trading unoriginal ideas back & forth with pre approval by their billionaire bosses
I stopped watching cable news in 2015. The 24/7 Trump show was raising my blood pressure because I could see the TV Personality was too irresistible for MSM. I find I don't miss out on news or miss cable news.
Being well informed hasn’t accomplished a damned thing other than garnering us repeated punches in the metaphorical dick, so why put in the time? My wife and I have re-oriented around being better informed about sports and music, also reading a LOT more fiction and historical non-fiction.
Politics has become the new highly addictive soap opera that "news" channels have cashed in on like it's their only model for making money. Especially thanks to their prime star, Donnie. They helped get him back in office.
Was thinking about this as well - like they tried to normalize him so he’d get re-elected and their show renewed for another season, thinking their ratings would be maintained. Never considered we’d get disgusted with THEM and just turn the whole damn thing off.
I used to have Morning Joe and various other MSNBC or CNN programming on while working, but not anymore. I watched a bit of coverage while Luigi was still on the run, and tuned in a couple of times when Tom Nichols @radiofreetom.bsky.social announced an upcoming segment, but that's it.
It feels like with the corona... I'm sorry, inauguration, coming soon, this is a respite from an onslaught of just insane stories like we saw in his previous administration, but worse. It won't be avoidable much longer, so this is kind of a final few deep breaths beforehand.
It feels like, what good did keeping up with the daily grind do for us? 1/3 of the country barely even realized there was an election, much less what the stakes were.
My time is better spent reading books, listening to podcasts, and watching documentaries. And preparing for what's coming.
Ever read the book Willpower, by Roy Baumeister and John Tierney? They profile a number of celebrities and their methods of conquering challenges. One is David Blaine, the endurance guy. He would build himself up for his feats, but then when they're over go through a phase of complete relaxation.
Upper class libs crying too much politics wouldn't make it a day as a minority. We don't get a choice, we have to day tuned in for the next thing the shithead politicians take from us.
It does track. It's also dangerous because it's their goal. They need an uninformed and uneducated public in order to do whatever they want without resistance or consequences.
I haven’t watched any news since the election. I’ve read a little news, but not much. It’s just too crushing. I had my hopes so set on a Harris victory. Honestly, I still can’t fully believe that he’s going to be president again. It’s too exhausting to try to comprehend it.
I have watched BBC and Skynews from the UK and CBC from Canada. The difference is amazing. They actually have news instead of talking heads with opinions.
I think most of us would like to see actual news on the news. What's happening in Ukraine, Africa, the Middle East, China, and Europe? All we get are people rehashing the outrage issue of the day all day.
I still read and consume news but I am off the cable train and even have avoided TV news altogether. It is junk food, lots of calories and fat but no content. If I want that I'll eat a bag of chips.
CNN was my background noise for 30 years, then they didn’t tRUmp townhall, so I went to MSNBC. Fine, until they went and kissed tRUmp’s ass at MAL. Fine. No more TV news. There’s nothing in MSM that isn’t normalizing him now.
Comments

More like, "Americans are exhausted by the corrupt corporate news industry that sold out America"
People are sick of the overpaid teleprompter reading hacks that failed the country. They sane-washed, normalized, and bothsidesed the orange felon
And I have started to block key words here on Bluesky so I don't have to look the felon or his crooked fascist cohort.
TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES, NOT THE MAN.
Anything else is a distraction.
- Dangerous Wealth Inequality.
- Unavailability of sufficiently cheap housing.

Get a grip Americans!
Not listening to the mentally compromised Sudafed addict brutalize the English language gives me calm.
Never knew how just hearing stinky try to speak could stress me so much.

inundating a server -- flooding social media
invalid data -- fake news == lies
Illegitimate ip address -- fake & real social media accounts spreading fake news
A nice consolidated resource is this.

I am done. For good.
I will read articles from sites I trust. Listen to podcasts and some of the streaming independent source.
Cable news is forever dead to me.
Serve us plates of bullshit, don’t be surprised we don’t come back to the diner.
We clearly understand that the journalists are trying to protect their lifestyle and the Oligarch owners need to pay tribute to the Reich leaders, just in case.
I feel the difference getting my news from here. I feel empowered and informed.
With cable/corporate/co-opted news it’s like someone captured and leashed my amygdala & continually yanks it to drain me of my life force
1. Regurgitation of the latest misleading, out of context or outright false talking point
2. Horse race analysis
3. Soap opera / palace intrigue
Policy analysis and discussion is virtually non existent.
The only shows I can tolerate now are Nicolle and Lawrence. And really, only the first 20-30 min of each
Will never again watch another minute of Morning Joe
Unpopular opinion: Maddow is increasingly full of herself. Ruhle is hot and underrated but on too late
Same applies to most of the billionaire-owned MSM. And we don't miss it.
I think we've lost faith in institutions.
MSNBC was to me the beacon of hope.
I never watched the morning show. Too much like mayer or rogan.

I'm very loyal.
I am much happier and not any less well informed.
It hurt, but it trained my political senses.
I see no purpose in repeating that.
I know what's coming.
I know how much worse it could get.
I can't do anything about it.
All I can do is vote in 26 and 28.
And that's enough.
Until then, sports and books for me.
My time is better spent reading books, listening to podcasts, and watching documentaries. And preparing for what's coming.
Where’s the actual news rather than performative posturing and fake bothsidesing?
So many Canadians take it for granted.
