You do, and that’s the low-key benefit if you live in an area with mobility where rents aren’t stupid. (That’s a big IF). That problem with the roof some years later, that’s a me-today problem I’ve got to fix with my big girl pants on. ownership is better in the long run 100%, renting had some wins.
As with healthcare, America’s system is number one because it gives you the freedom to unsubscribe at any time and only choose the services you need (like water OR electricity)
What if there were an "Amazon Prime Housing Plan", where you can live for low cost but you're locked into a ton of Amazon-supported services and there are ads on all surfaces. It's like a company town, but for consumers instead of workers.
I think I just gave myself a stress cramp thinking this
Tho, I’ve been suspicious that every TV/display I’ve connected to my WiFi for the last 20 years has been spying on me, so maybe it’s a saturated market already.
If you allow advertisers to beam ads onto every surface of your home and directly into your eyeballs you can get up to 10% off your rent. *deduction is only from base rent and not taken from made up charges or hikes to rent since 2019.
Why? It’s smart to buy a house with its 3.2-3.7% average appreciation? 1% more than inflation? But before you calculate that ~ 3% ROI, don’t forget to deduct closing costs and selling costs, mortgage interest and property taxes and insurance and repairs, renovations, and maintenance.
Funny how we've made laws to protect one kind of housing customer, one with typically more money, and not another, one typically with less, isn't it? Almost like the rules were made by someone with money...
With HOA's now basically being mandatory most places, even if you buy a home, the monthly payments never end. Plus, HOA's are basically a de facto local government that you can't vote out, and can take your home away if you're behind on payments, so...
Eh. I thought that made it different from home ownership and then homeownership was like insurance is just gonna go up because boomers wanna live on landfills in the Everglades.
It's not even a good subscription. If I move to a new house, my Spotify and Netflix come with me. Why doesn't it work like that with rent? The rental company has houses all over the country, but I can't just transfer my rental subscription to another house. Why does moving have to be a huge deal?
I experienced this when I traveled in Wales in the early 1980s.
The coin operated hot showers were especially fun when you had paper money, no coins, and the proprietors were *off duty*, you annoying people.

You are renting our rooms. Why do you expect any services? There's coin opps.

"Rent is over 600 per month, money forever lost for you & I:
How much could you lend me to buy a house on a 25 yr loan?"
That fixed it!
Instead of a Co-Op apartment, it's a Coin-Op apartment.
Your apartment is literally coin operated. Front door. Refrigerator. Phone. Everything important.

We didn't really expect that our hosts kinda hated us.
I mean, if they had changed our paper money, they would have made a profit.
WTF?
It's a real problem.
