There is no chance in hell that I will do my postdoc at any university that complies with a fascist government, even if the thugs get booted out in a later election. The risk is too great. Nor will I seek lecturer positions there after.
I wouldn't be so sure. A lot of conservatives align with leftists on hating is**el and I've witnessed republican spaces openly criticizing the new laws trying to prevent them from speaking out
This is literally the first time in my life I’m not only glad but genuinely rejoicing that I left Barnard to finish my undergraduate degree elsewhere. Thankfully I don’t have the Barnard/Columbia stain on my resume. #fascism
Good! Any school that is pro-fascists should go under. If I were a pro-freedom school, I would offer free transfers to Columbia students. How can we make this happen?
Why the fuck would you take out insane loans to go to a school that has admitted that will not give you the education you are paying for? Guessing companies will absolutely weight the applicants of Colombia grads- literally removing the benefit of degree! Fucking DUH!
I’m convinced the best way to battle this all is by withholding our spending. Because people in power in the USA only care about money and assets. Our opinions matter not at all to them.
George Conway said on a podcast the other day he’s thinking of sending his college ready daughter to Europe to study. Our universities are going to see a huge plunge in foreign students.
Those foreign students basically subsidize the American ones, especially in state schools with in-state tuition. But also I suspect in those big private schools, where foreign students don't get financial aid to off-set the highway-robbery tuition rates.
If I were #college age right now, I'd look into European universities. Ireland and the Netherlands (many undergrad majors taught entirely in English) would be excellent choices.
One son went to London, the other’s studying in Dublin. I was relieved because of the guns when they went abroad. Now I am relieved because of the facism. They will have more freedom over there.
If by "right now" you mean "until a year ago" then, yes. But we have a right-wing administration too and things are not looking up if you want a) to follow courses in English, or b) are a foreign student.
It's kinda surreal how the people who should be most hyper aware of protecting their reputation could make such short sighted decisions that would absolutely torch it .
Don’t go to the Wharton School either. The guy destroying the US economy brags that he graduated from Wharton Business School at UPenn. Trump sure as hell didn’t earn that degree. Daddy Trump must have bought it for him.
Law firms & Unis who capitulated will witness a rebuff, that unforeseen hard face smack as brain and talent drains. The most promising will aspire elsewhere. The talented & principled regardless of race or creed will reconsider. Do I choose to be in a place that will throw me under the bus & drive?
Please tarnish the reputations of everyone and every institution that has obeyed in advance. All must understand the price to pay for complicity with fascism.
Universities, at least the big ones, have been so abstracted from their core operations (learning) and their customers (students) because they've spent the last several decades pretending to an REIT+patent factory.
So much so that the people that run them actively resent students and professors.
You can see it in the overreaction to Gaza protests and the eager compliance with Trump: they really do hate their core mission. That mission (learning) is messy, relies on other, poorer, people, all of whom have diverse opinions and needs and wants.
It's a lot like what business went through during the pandemic. Years of ZIRP and low-effort stock gains made them forget that, holy shit, customers and workers actually are kind of important.
And the leaders of those businesses were *really resentful* that they needed customers and workers.
OH YA THINK???
The type of young minds that would have wanted to go to Columbia in New York City are exactly the type that would revile Columbia's obsequious capitulation to a figure like Trump.
My sympathy meter ran out on Jan. 20th when businesses started to fold to the wannabe dictator, fascist freak that sits in office right now. When CU capitulated, that sealed their fate just like fucking Target and Tesla.
It was a bold move to say to anti-zionists that they would be arrested and to say to zionists that they were doing It because they were not safe on theirs campi.
it also can't be understated how much revoking a degree 1. so quickly and 2. for reasons other than academic fraud completely demolishes the trust in a university. people are not keen on having brand-new forms of dangling swords show up on their career paths.
There are MANY high achieving HS students taking a gap year, going to school near home, and otherwise rejecting Ivy League and prestigious schools. There are also many reasonably good students doing the same thing. These kids are scared, tired, and clocking out of the usual pathways to "success"
I hope we'll still be able to look into colleges for my son next year. There's no chance I'll send him to a school that doesn't protect their students. My oldest's school actually sent the students emails telling them not to talk to cops or any law enforcement & gave a # to call.
Meanwhile a wholly unrelated Columbia College Chicago assured us as parents that they would use every legal means necessary to fight the administration when drumpf makes any policies that endanger students, their gender identities, DEI or their funding from DoE.
Excellent. No parent should want their kid going to a school that would rather have their students kidnapped than tap into their billions in endowments.
How far gone are we that the university is just getting that letting their students be rendered by the state or brutally beaten by local cops is a problem, but only because it might affect their revenue and “branding”?
This is wonderful news. Here’s hoping prospective students continue to decline offers from every school that bent the knee and that application volumes for those schools drop through the floor as badly as today’s stock market. They deserve it.
Yes, and hiring managers are tasked explicitly with initially judging them based on a short list of their claimed accomplishments, experience, and history. That is how it works and why brand damage matters.
That’s how it works and Columbia 2026 is still a better brand than Fordham 2026 and any manager that decides not to hire great candidates because the hiring manager has a bias issue, is failing basic logic. And their job.
Not taking red flags as to a candidate’s judgement and/or character into account would be negligent.
As is said to someone else 2026 is probably too extreme a cut off. 26/27 grads might have a compelling reason why they couldn’t transfer that should be considered. After that, not so much.
Maybe 2026 is a bit harsh. Anyone entering after now for sure. I guess I’d be willing to hear an explanation from a 26/27 on why they couldn’t transfer.
Somehow I have trouble seeing kids who are heading for one of the nation's most elite universities, at 70k/year, and are therefore set for life based on their degree and connections, as "victims."
Not every student who gets into an elite university is undeserving. Not every student is from a rich family. Many have overcome tremendous obstacles to achieve a lifelong dream.
They're not victims if they choose to continue spending tuition at this college. They can transfer. There are other schools who teach the same shit and don't allow jack booted thugs to dictate "truth".
Many scholarships don’t transfer; it depends who it's from. You also pretty often can’t transfer universities after a certain point because too many of your credits are from one school for another to want to say they gave you the degree. There are many reasons someone might not be able to transfer.
I also transferred. Lost a lot of credit and had to repeat. It's not the end of the world. However, being tainted with Columbia's soiled reputation might end their career before it even begins.
This ⬆️. Just look at the charred remains of everything and everyone from his first term. Doesn't matter why you involve yourself with him... he'll either turn on you, you'll turn on him leading to him turning on you, or you survive and you become a shell of your former self.
Columbia University transforming itself from one of the premier ivies into the fallback option for the kids whose dad owns a car dealership but were waitlisted at Alabama and Ole Miss
Columbia rebranding as Authoritarian State University & wondering why students aren’t lining up. Bold strategy, let’s see if it pays off. 😂😂🤣🤣 Right on prospective students! Keep this up so other university see their future if they bend the knee!!!
Maybe if MAGA starts reworking their narrative about colleges being woke liberal indoctrination machines that teach you nothing of actual value or worth, Columbia can thrive again.
Serious question, how can we get more journalists and media companies to air what’s really going on? Everything that’s happening is going according to plan, the heritage foundations plan.
Start supporting and promoting Independent Journalists and Follow them on as many social media platforms as you are on, share them on your timeline. Network media is to beholden to the dick tator
They mistake students as a mere commodity that gets fed into their elite university to churn out elite graduates.
It's the students that make the school elite. They recognize genocide when they see it because they are elite. If those students all go elsewhere, that becomes the new elite school.
They will be further punished when foreign students, paying full tuition, stop coming. Of course those spots can be filled by students from China and other places where they are not accustomed to dissent

We'll genuinely have to wait and see
You just presupposed a random number of conservative voters when I'm referring to conservative spaces
And yes, leftists are typically acting on community and empathy; why wouldn't we hate an apartheid state?

Nobody should have to give up their civil rights to attend school.
(The offer sucked. $4,000 of fellowships and aid for a $40,000 one year masters.)

So much so that the people that run them actively resent students and professors.
They don't want that. They want to be REITs.
And the leaders of those businesses were *really resentful* that they needed customers and workers.
Crank out patents and rent out staff & facilities to private entities, sure, but education? Naah.
You're right, though: "hedge fund" works about as well as REIT does.
The type of young minds that would have wanted to go to Columbia in New York City are exactly the type that would revile Columbia's obsequious capitulation to a figure like Trump.
I wonder why It didn't pay off...
(I am an olde and have gone back to school. Our school president is named Harris, so every time I see "President Harris" I get a sad startle.)
Haven’t seen any public policy or statement.
Bending the knee is a sign of weakness, especially from such a prestigious university, a place that has shaped some of the most intelligent minds.
Another will take its place.
Fuck Columbia and every other university that chooses complicity.
I know if I see a 2026+ Columbia degree on a resume that I’m not hiring that person. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
As is said to someone else 2026 is probably too extreme a cut off. 26/27 grads might have a compelling reason why they couldn’t transfer that should be considered. After that, not so much.
Can scholarships transfer?
Since many of them are designed to help gifted poor people do they even still exist under Donald?
There are also moving and housing costs.
My first transfer, the only credits I got to keep from my first college were the PE credits.
My third transfer, I didn't even get to keep all of my community college credits.
Plus there are scholarships to think about. It's not as simple as "just transfer."
It's the students that make the school elite. They recognize genocide when they see it because they are elite. If those students all go elsewhere, that becomes the new elite school.
“We’re too sexy to be shunned.”
