Asheville subreddit is lacking, they need a snappy change of heart. they're removing posts asking them to join the movement. :/ but the WNC sub took a stance! so I joined them and left Asheville lol.
I just left r/asheville (and reddit in general) because of this. it is obviously filled with people who only care about "my freedom of speech" and such. I brought up that I was a trans woman looking for community support and I was laughed at by a lot of them. It's full of assholes and probably nazis
crazy how free speech only gets brought up when they wanna say slurs and be rancid with no consequences lol. I hope you can find somewhere better to be, I'm very saddened to hear how they treated you. :(
for the most part, like any city. but I guess it's more of the less liberal types on their reddit. or people who don't actually live there/in the area.
FYI to those who may not know Reddit is pretty liberal overall. I say this as someone who has been on Reddit for ~10years (yes I’m very smart /s). The support for nazis there, in general, is low. We need to keep this momentum against authoritarians, and con-men going. Let’s keep this up everywhere
Yeah and it was eventually banned. Now most of those cretins now frequent the conservative sub. I may have done a poor job communicating it but I think if you took stock of the entire site, this movement included, there are more left leaning people there than otherwise. I could be off though
I hope you're right, but I left already after 11 years. It'd take a lot for me to go back, unless Bluesky goes to hell. Maybe it really does depend what subs you frequent, but I was mainly there for games and politics.
I think it's more location-based than generation-based. Xers, Millennials, Zs in cities or college towns all seem to lean left, while those in rural areas or small, non-college towns lean (well, more than lean, really) right. Suburbs seem to be a mix.
Also true. It's amazing what you can learn when you leave you your small echo chamber of ideals.
Leaving a small town completely changed my views and made me realize how much better the world could be if more people left their bubbles and erased the stigmas.
Reddit is not at all liberal overall, no idea where you have that from. Being a woman is enough to get downvoted into oblivion literally anywhere outside of women centered subs. Being a hot woman is literally enough to get banned in many subs that have nothing to do with looks in the first place.
First link doesn't work and the second one pretty much says it's still a sexist result?
Like, heavily male space is always linked to misogyny. Men lean conservative on every study I see, doesn't really make sense that Reddit out of all places would be different.
Yeah it covers gender bias, sexism and a ton of other things across left wing and right wing spaces but both articles claim Reddit is a left leaning or liberal space. Like another commenter claimed, while unfortunate, both can be true.
"... a user base that is more likely to be young, male and liberal than the general public" - This does not mean that it's liberal. This means it's just not as conservative as the general public.
However, thanks for the link but I'm done discussing primarily male online spaces as liberal. 😉
Interesting what subreddits have you experienced this?
Austin subreddit (from TX we are a liberal city) is also pretty liberal, manga and mahwa subreddits also are or at least some aren't republican or political at all or sexist.
Pretty much all the fun/jokes subs, all the ask subs, relationship subs, selfimprovement,...
The Austria sub is a hit or miss, women/LGBTQIA+ centered subs are generally positive, same as baking, cats and gardening. (Gonna say that there are majority women in these subs too.)
That might be it, normally the joke subs tend to be dumb kids and teenager boys who don't know how to speak to women.
The relationship sub is something else, and haven't been on self improvement.
Hope you like it more here and definitely block those trolls no need to let them affect you.
🫂
Oh god. I realize my Reddit account is just about 18 years old.
The support is there. I turned down my usage in 2016 just because the vibes were wrong and I had to run an extension to see if commenters were in horrible groups. I nuked my comments and walked away for a few years.
Yeah there’s a surprising percentage the right wing accounts just being bots which is fucking baffling. But it can influence people to right wing ideas which is fucked
So you don’t think it’s weird that a lot of bots are used to influence people’s political opinions on platforms like Reddit, X, Facebook, etc? You think that’s a good thing?
Bots and astroturfing is a thing on social media in general, but I've seen a shocking amount of it skewed towards one side.
Honestly public discourse around things would be better if companies were held legally responsible for bots and if astroturfing became a felony or at least fined.
No, I don't think that's a good thing, as much as I think it isn't 'weird' for right-wing politics to enter social media or as much as I detest thinking that 'right-wing' is equal to fascism.
If you're a right wing person, who despairs at people equating right-wing beliefs with fascism, the onus is on you to chase the fascists out of mainstream right-wing movements. How's that going?
I don’t see how people having political discourse and bots spamming repetitive messages to flood the spaces of people having said discourse is the same thing.
Right wing ideas are not terrible just for being right wing. They actually aren’t terrible at all, usually.
These are unusual times and as a life long Republican, I am on board with supporting left wing ideologies as a form of protest against the cowardice of republicans when dealing with trump.
I honestly don’t know. I think that depends a lot on the American people and our tolerance for the clown show. MAGA is the voice of the Republican Party right now, for better or worse. It has definitely damaged the Republican brand. It remains to be seen if that’s permanent.
"is pretty liberal overall"
Untili there is a post about some non-european migrant doing some dumb shit r/Europe and all european subreddits turn brown in a heartbeat.
Extremely large parts of Reddit are very right-wing. To say nothing of how many subreddits exist for the express purpose of being shitty about trans people
Yeah, I don't like people are pretending Reddit's liberal. It's not. I have been there for a year. Some subs I can't even say I am bi, I get downvoted in a Sims sub just for saying I made an Indian Sim. The transphobia alone...
Reddit's not any better and definitely hiding Nazis in their subs.
Gotta agree, I stumbled upon the incels crying because "everything is woke" too many times there. Maybe it depends on the sub?
In the case of the gamer communities I always see a high amount of bigots
Sadly I am there mostly for gaming subs so it's likely why I have seen it more. (Some subs are fine, like my city's sub surprisingly, some like the LGBTA are cool but struggle with racism). Some TV show subs are real bad, anytime I think finally, a good left sub, there's always some bigots in it.
Yeah so my generalization may be off a bit. My experience with some of the most visited/popular subs on there is that it leans liberal. There are obviously terrible and shitty subreddits and users. Everyone might have different experiences and I can respect that.
Please explain? People got together and decided that they did not want to support twitter anymore because its leader is a shit person? Both of the platforms are still usable, and there isn’t even a mandate from Reddit to block the links. The users of the subreddits decided to do it collectively.
This concept, while it seems foreign to some, is not “cancel culture”. You don’t get to be an absolute terrible human being and have no consequences because you cooked up some half baked and obviously bullshit explanation for your shitty behavior.
Censorship is hilarious here btw. What are your current thoughts on the pausing of all public communication from every one of the nations health agencies?
I'm convinced Reddit skews liberal because they have downvotes. Unlike everywhere else, the community actually controls the content that rises to the top.
Nice and all but I said something as simple as “shouldn’t have missed” back when trump got shot and I got banned for that shit. Reddit is a cesspit too
Last time, the defiant reddit mods and users were banned or left in protest until everything was enshittified. My bet is that this time, reddit will reinforce the resulting ads, bots and AI with a good helping of nazis.
More of a McMansionhell guy myself, but I'm trying to expand my horizons. Found this on MMH'S Thursday feature, it's great. Wait....today is Thursday, gotta go.
It was nice to see that my football team's subedit was one of the first yesterday (that I saw anyway). It's great so many subredits are all doing the same thing.
Warhammer subreddit did the same, which threw me off. I figured we'd long since ceded basically all of gaming communities to the Nazis. Heartening, if likely not much else.
Most of the video/rpg subs I follow (Baldur's Gate, Skyrim, various D&D subs, even the tiny Savage Worlds sub) joined the ban, along with several book subs. Whereas most of the animal subs seem to be ignoring it.
Ehhh, disagreed. It certainly started that way but you can only lionize the stormtrooper ubermenschen (for branding reasons or otherwise) so much before they're really not being presented as villains/anti-heroes.
Interesting article. Wrt Evans' last couple of paragraphs, I think the problem is that what Evans rightly sees as horrifying, fascists see as desirable. Fascists like abusive fathers. Fascists like cruel and bloody regimes. To a fascist the "promise of progress and understanding" is a left wing lie.
Fascists have an incredibly dark world view. "An eternity of carnage and slaughter" is simply how the world is, in their eyes. The races are seen as fundamentally different. Racial war is inevitable. A race that believes in peace will be wiped out. The best future possible is to fight the war + win.
I think that the comic strip "Nemesis the Warlock" from 2000AD, one of WH40K's sources, does a better job of being anti-fascist. In Nemesis the humans, the Terminators, are clearly evil while the aliens they murder are innocent. This page is from Prog 223:
My example for you is There was a lot of “what’s gonna work? Teamwork!” in Warhammer fantasy books notably Jurgen and felix, literally different species but bonded by compassion for all and desire to beat up psychotic kooks and other baddies
You joke, but there's a scene in a Sisters of Battle novel where a guy offhand mentions that he has a friend who picked a living saint's name when she transitioned, not realizing he was talking to that living saint
Damn could I get the name of that book, I'll be looking for more 40k books to read after I finish the Iron Warriors Omnibus and this has moved to the top of my list.
I didn’t realize this was a thing and jumped into the baulders gate 3 character build sub last night and it was top of the page. I was laughing and crying at the same time. We live in such wild times y’all. Every time someone would be “well actually…” they were immediately told “yeah it was nazi”.
The warhammer space has cleaned up A LOT in recent years. At least compared to how it was in the late 90s early 00. Recently came back to the hobby and it’s a much better space today than it ever was.
D&D and MTG subreddits seem to be heading to do it too if they haven’t already.
The surprising one was PCGaming. The master race chose to ban Twitter links.
90% of subreddits are basically solidly progressive and anti-fascism, as seen by looking at what gets upvoted. It's just specific subs that are either right-winger communities (a.k.a. safe spaces for fascists who got the boot and don't want their feelings hurt) or have weirdo mods.
The Warhammer community specifically has had to be extra vigilant against Nazi bullshit due to the nature of it's content. So now we have the main WH subs, which are anti-nazi and pro-inclusion, then there's the Nazi WH subs (eg r/HorusGalaxy) created by the fascists kicked out of the main subs.
Well, lets be honest here, whatever the side, there always be some f*ckhead who will want to force their ideals on anothers, especially if they are far-wingers. Whats important is to ourselves keep trying to better the community and make up for losses they made.
My favorite "fascists getting owned" tabletop story will always be their attempted exodus to Trench Crusade, where they were promptly nuked by mods of the official TC discord. Then they went to Twitter to claim the game would fail because it was too woke. Then TC's kickstarter made almost $5 million
Shortly before the last BattleTech Kickstarter, the Nazis proudly crowed that it was too woke for general appeal and that the campaign would fail. It made $7.5 million on Kickstarter and entered the Top 20 highest-grossing campaigns of all time. (It's now #22.)
Which is funny because when the shit blew up about the Custodes, those same nazis and alt-right chuds tried to colonise Battletech as the alternative to 40k and got their asses solidly thrown back out
Small correction because it's funnier. It wasn't TC discord, it was 28mag discord, this cute hobby magazine about Warhammer and wargames. Game was hosted there but also...it's server where a female space marine contest was held...knowing fascies of Warhammer, that is deeply funny
Being a fascist/racist online guy is basically a lifestyle for some people. I'm in subreddits that have absolutely nothing to do with politics or race etc. and even they all have a handful of regulars with slurs in their usernames, mods are overwhelmed and scared of retaliation so they ignore it
There are some people in the world that have no value whatsoever. So instead of trying to gain value by improving themselves, they try to take away the value of others. Trolling is literally their only sense of worth
Reddit will still defend Nazis tho. Lost my account of 14 years because I commented on a post and said that 400k Americans died in WW2 to gives us the right to punch Nazis in the face. That violated their “encouraging violence or something” policy.
Every single sub I follow animously agreed that sharing Twitter links should be off the table. I know reddit has a marred history, but before bluesky, it was, shockingly, one of the few places online where I saw people aggressively shutting down nazi shit. It's a weird but welcome turnaround.
I have friends on sports twitter making the jump over here too. Albeit that community will take longer to leave the app cause most grifters stem from the sports part of the app, but it’s slowly happening
I'm glad this is happening. For so long, everyone has stayed away from politics, making political statements and stuff like that but look where that got us. Uneducated people making political decisions who've never had a political discussion in their entire life.
Just burn it all down and start over. I’m starting to think that’s why one single room in our unit was replaced with drywall. (There are char like marks and black discoloration on studs)
I occasionally look in on the Old School Cool forum (I have never been cool, but I am old), and the last couple of days it's been nothing but people posting photos of their WWII Nazi-fighting relatives. It gives me some hope, knowing people have not forgotten.
I’m seeing a lot of subreddits doing that and by and large Twitter links are being banned by near unanimous consent. It’s not a death blow to Twitter (unfortunately) but it is encouraging and ever fuck you to that site and Elon adds up over time.
That said, Spez has his tongue so far up Elon's asshole he can taste what he had for dinner. He modelled the disastrous API charging on what Musk was doing to Twitter at the time and has repeatedly glazed his business decisions.
Spez has in the past proven himself to be a right wing shitheel and I predict that at the end of all this a lot of mods are going to find themselves replaced with powermods that will overturn any Twitter bans.
Reddit users have stuck with the site through worse shit than this. Spez has shown in the past that he and the admin will replace entire mod groups if they take up any form of activism against his interests.
There's no actual Reddit alternative other than Voat, and Voat is worse.
100 year old buildings in the USA are a rarity. Most were made of wood & not particularly well-made, meaning time took them one way or another (replaced / destroyed by nature).
Because of this, surviving buildings tend to have a few specific interesting traits & designs.
Vista screwed over my expensive SoundBlaster Audigy card because the drivers sucked - wasn't until 7 that things were somewhat fixed.
I will never forgive nvidia for buying 3dfx and abandoning the tech by refusing to release WinXP drivers. My $400 (at the time) video card was useless.
I love that subreddit. Everyone is always really nice there. You can ask the dumbest question and no one will be a jerk to you. Immaculate vibes. Them and the historical costuming subreddit.
ADL sold out to Israel. they started calling absurd shit 'antisemite' a couple of years ago. things like wearing a hijab or existing in Palestine are labeled antisemite. they called Nelson Mandella antisemite because he opposed apartheid.
I wholly support their move, but anti-fascism very much is political. Fascism, as well as being a conspiracy to commit mass murder, is a political movement.
Everyone praising Reddit seems to forget who owns it. Leadership will eventually capitulate to the fascists because all they care about is money. Remember the "boycott" that lasted like 3 days? Remember how everyone just rolled over and forgot because the admins threatened to remove them as mods?
I see your point. I stopped going on there for about a year when they removed third party apps. My thinking is that companies like Twitter and Meta are making overtly anti democratic moves. If we are going to limit our social media presence anywhere it’s there.
We ALL need to be doing whatever we can! Sending gratitude out to these folks for stepping up! How will the rest of us step up today?? In little ways, we all can step up to this moment!
Real talk, it warms my heart and calms my anxiety slightly (VERY slightly) to see so many people taking vocal stands against this BS. All evil needs to thrive is for good people to stay silent.
I have to be honest, but I never imagined that Reddit would be the social network that makes me feel most part of a community against fascism. Every time I log in, I feel hope that organization and collective action is possible.
Reddit has changed the past few years, the trolls went to X I guess, it's been pretty pleasant over there actually, I mainly use bluesky and Reddit now.
The change started happening after Reddit massively cleaned up its dark corner pedophile accepting spaces. Which, honestly, are pretty much the same people you just mentioned so…
I’m over here because of the Twitter boycotts on Reddit. I have never had a Twitter, but the boycotts inspired me to give Bluesky a chance. So far… I’m loving it over here.
Sort of same, not because of the reddit boycotts but because I want twitter to fall, and bluesky to take its place. Like you I'm pretty happy here!! 🖤🖤
Thank you, had one in my first post hid his comment and blocked him. I agree trolls should definitely be ignored and blocked. They want attention after all.
The Starter Packs were a super cool way to get my feed up to snuff without trying to track down reports for all of my hobbies. It made the move-in process a breeze.
A respectable decision by people that deserve no respect. Don't gaslight me that this isn't about politics. It makes you look like an untrustworthy POS.
I love that subreddit - so many people proud to steward their old homes. People with love for their communities and their neighbors. People who understand that enjoying historical aesthetic is not equal to replicating the culture of the times. In the face of fascism, silence is violence.
TBH it's fairly relevant. I live
in a nearly-century-old
house and the original gas
fireplace knob was adorned with a Swaztika (the house was likely occupied by German immigrants upon it's construction).
Fascism has been an unrelenting threat in the United States for as
long as fascism has existed.
Other subreddits are doing the same, and it has been so revealing the people that are upset about this decision and their attempts to downplay matters. I've seen many try to make it about 'just politics' or that he was 'giving his heart' to the audience.
my goodness. I do not understand modern culture these days at all, and the only podcast I regularly listen to is a comedy Star Trek podcast (@greatesttrek.bsky.social), so if *this* is the thing that maybe breaks the fever, then 1) great! and 2) huh?
How long before NOT visiting X for more than 12 hours will be declared terrorism and result in visit from FBI Swat team? Don’t tell me that it never can happen in US… just look who is in and around the WH.
Old house person here. I'm not on Reddit, but the old house community on Insta generally is on the left side of the political spectrum, so I'm not surprised.
We saw bits and pieces of this kind of low cost resistance. Never seems to translate into real world resistance though, i.e. votes.
How many of those 22,000 upvotes and the other subreddits doing the same are from real, Americans who voted for VP Harris?
Agree 100% and I did the exact same.
My point is, all the internet people who are participating and highlighting the oligarchic fascistic craziness, how many of them actually voted for Dems to prevent this? It’s probably not even close to 80% and that’s the problem I have with them.
r/OldSchoolCool which is usually dominated by old celeb photos, has been non stop “here’s a photo of my grandad who fought the nazis” for the past couple days
The subreddit I'm on for a disease I have said they'd stop X links and got pushback. Like ma'am being chronically ill IS political and this is the right call.
Same. I'm in the celiac subreddit, and people were whining about not wanting things to be "political." Except, like you said, it already IS political. Especially since Trump and RFK want to dismantle the ADA and remove food labeling regulations.
Exactly! I have Cushing's, and one of the treatments is Mifepristone. On top of that, anyone on prescription meds is looking at a massive price increase directly because of Trump's actions. It's honestly terrifying, but I'm really glad the mods are taking a stance ❤️
Hurt them where it hurts! All these billionaires have built systems that keep the public divided and hence don’t expect any backlash from their actions! It’s basically doing things without any accountability. Hopefully, the Public understands this soon.
r/WhitePeopleTwitter banning it amuses me, a sub founded on posting twitter stuff, r/BlackPeopleTwitter hadn't banned it yet, but I think they're going the same route
I had the same question but I think what they mean by this is it isn’t a decision based on partisan/ party political loyalties, but hard red lines about what is acceptable in civil political discourse.
It’s political but they don’t mean politics the way it actually means. They mean defensible I think? Or something like that. I decided it wasn’t a battle worth fighting personally.
I noticed a STRONG increase in 'architecture rebellion' accounts on Instagram. All of them despise after-WW2 architecture. How great Germany was before the war. Everything else gets mocked. Brutalism, modernism, it's all "leftist". It's all giving strong nazism vibes.
Unless you're one of *those* moderators that collects them like Funkopops and power trips every time they log in, in which case I boo in your general direction.
Nope only accept mod positions for games I care about and am already an active member of the sub. I don't have time for that nonsense because I actually try to do a decent job of it even if it is voluntary.
On the topic of games, I'm always blown away by people who can play entire franchises and still not realize they're the bad guys. Dragon Age is the main one. Like... just because you can be a dick in game doesn't mean the game is condoning it, you boobs.
I don't want to commit the fallacy of "my timeline is a perfect record of current events" but it will be interesting to see how many more Elon Musk antics folks will be willing to tolerate
Sorry, but I have to disagree on one thing: it's definitely a political decision.
Anti-fascism is the only correct stance, but also IS a deeply political one, and that's good.
Politic isn't a bad word, and we shouldn't be afraid of it.
I saw many subreddit Mods today, with varying subject matter, notifying users that they can no longer repost from Twitter (I refuse to call it X) or any Meta app. Love it!
The upvotes thing is the big aspect - it's happening over a lot of subreddits, but those posts asking whether they should are consistently the most upvoted posts I've ever seen on the respective subreddits.
It's heartening, despite the usual five or so people arguing heavily against it.
It's very funny to see people who have never interacted with a sub announce they're unsubbing. Very much a "door's to your left" situation. Way I see it, if that decision makes people mad enough to flounce, good riddance to bad rubbish.
There was one particularly egregious example where I argued with someone on a sub that, to avoid revealing my name, is a place where people should seriously know better.
American politics is far to the right compared to a lot of places, those supporting Musk seem to have no awareness of it.
How? Elon is in power because of a traitor. Remove the Traitor, remove Elon. Once Elon is no longer protected by Trump and MAGA is broken the SEC can go after him for his manipulation of the Twitter purchase.
Just checked back in with the baulders gate 3 character build sub that last night was around a thousand and it’s up to 4K. Way to go fellow geeks who want to make the most bad ass character possible.
Fuckers thought they could divide the nation using race and gender, this what is going to happen. Sell your teslas, sell your Tesla stock, otherwise you are a modern nazi
What's really cemented how fucked we were was a couple years ago seeing nazism starting to get painted as just another valid political ideology, maybe extreme but wrong to discriminate or make unfair blanket statements about. And centrists saying in the name of fairness we gotta hear them out.
I don't understand how people have deluded themselves into thinking that isn't political. Is it because they think being political is bad? "Fascism is bad" is absolutely a political position. The mental hoops they've jumped through are astonishing, but for what benefit? It's okay to be political.
The issue is that people have come to think that "political" means "all positions are valid". If you disagree with someone about politics it's considered just a matter of opinion, and suppressing *opinions* is censorship. So to say something isn't political is to say it isn't up for debate.
That would explain the hoops, both on Reddit and here on BlueSky. Although that is a phenomenally stupid way to think about something being "political."
It's weaponized language - labelling something political speech makes it both unassailable and radioactively sensitive. There is a pervasive belief that one must allow all political speech or none, so the label is used to shield or to censor depending on your goals.
i agree with you, and i've been trying to articulate to myself the way "political" has come to have a meaning beyond "about politics" to people these days. like based on context clues, "political" to the mod seems to be synonymous with "stunt" ?? interesting.
My reading of it is that they think it shouldn’t be political bc it is just about decency, but fascism is fundamentally not decent so they had to spell it out for people.
Explain how anti-fascism is political?
It is fundamental. If your democratic you automatically need to be anti-fascist. Because if you are not, you automatically are an anti-democrat. So no matter what is your political mindset, fascism is our common enemy.
Because this distinction doesn't exist. Something can be fundamental and political at the same time. In fact, if anti-fascism is fundamental to you, that means that this political belief is fundamental to you. There is no either-or here.

Politic isn't a bad word, and we shouldn't be afraid of it.
It's heartening, despite the usual five or so people arguing heavily against it.
