Lee Jae-myung, Leader of South Korea's Democratic Party, live-streamed himself scaling the walls of the National Assembly to bypass military barricades so that he could vote to overturn the President's martial law.

The photo is extraordinary on it's own, but with a little bit of context it's is intensely effecting. One of the civilians helping get the Parliament member over the wall has a little Sewol remembrance ribbon on their bag. The Sewol disaster killed hundreds of school kids and was mismanaged by 1/2
then President Pak Gun Hye, also a member of the country's right-conservative party. The Sewol disaster was a major contributor to the protests that led to her eventual removal and imprisonment. Once again tonight ordinary Koreans rose up to save their country from disaster brought on by the right.
You honestly can’t really believe that Park is responsible for Sewol disaster when it’s been proven that the incident was all due to the company’s negligence.
It must feel great to live in a country like that. All I know is what it feels like to live in an oligarchy where the a majority of "democrats" can't stand up cuz they lack a spine & spend their time w/ their heads between their legs where their balls should be & their pockets are lined w/ Corp $
Most are absolutely but there are exceptions to the rule. Unfortunately it's far too few to really make a difference in the grand scheme. Without the Jamie raskins, the Bernie Sanders the AOCs, and others like them the nation would have taken a dive all time ago
Presumably, most of the other 110 just didn’t get there in time or weren’t able to get into the building because of the barricades. Though I hear some members of the presidents’ party deliberately went to their Party HQ instead.
IT blows my mind that Democracy between countries isn't all that similar, but good in most cases...
BUT IN LITERALLY EVERY COUNTRY -- Conservatism is literally the same with the exact same goals. I feel like it's all putin. He blows up today? You'd see a lot of people panic.
What’s the difference between a kleptomaniac and a literalist? A literalist takes things literally and a kleptomaniac takes things, literally….. I’ll see myself out….
This thread too liberally applies the word "literally" to literally everything they liberally do! That's my whole, like literal, take on the whole literal thing, so yes, I too will literally retweet your twice usage of the word "literally" in the same sentence. Proud of literal liberals!
it isn't Putin, but conservatism IS a global political movement.
To be honest the closest thing to a single culprit behind conservatism is probably US Conservative Christian Churches(so: Neoconfederate Segregationists). THEY allied with Putin under Obama, and fund conservatives globally
Yes it all kind of started being a problem in the same time. He loves to shake things up and destabilize countries so he could take advantage of them. Well… he is very good in what he does and we are extremely naive.. 🥴🙃
Wilhoit: Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
Maybe... and it's just a thought; But if others were involved you'd see discrepancies and differences.
To my knowledge, they're all just doing the same things. I do take into account how hard it is to get people to "Work together." Especially if they're selfish people. It's nigh impossible.
Conservatism by its nature is power-hungry and authoritarian. You really don't need a sooper sekret Russo mastermind. It's just what right-wing politics is. You end up attributing far too much power to one man and work yourself up into a paranoid conspiratorial mess like the right-wing itself.
I feel like people everywhere have strong feelings about inflation and immigration. Ignoring it in favor of Putin being an omnipotent mastermind probably isn’t great.
The US pulls strings all across the world. It's not too far-fetched that Russia can do the same considering how much they have invested in that direction.
The bizarre repetition of Kremlin talking points among conservative republicans was completely unheard of not 10 years ago and is unmatched by orders of magnitude compared to whatever influence other adversarial nations have in DC.
it is pootin. scheming for decades, preparing sleeping cells KGB-style, sadistic, psychopatic delusional maniac.
it is always the individual, remember?
Maybe not maybe so but the Kremlin has worked hard to make sure that their political aims are the default right wing positions across the world. Wether the right wingers know it or not.
You need to zoom out. Putin is one of many billionaires. *That's* who is the source of all the problems. FFS, we have proof of several buying SC justices and them buying Congress and President's isn't a secret. They own the media, too, which is why we're fed stories of external boogeymen
The issue with conservatism is that it inherently lends itself to corruption. If you're attempting to scale back government programs, you're inevitably handing over public funds, or functions that were once public, to private entities. These private entities are more often than not your friends.
World over, the person or party in power, especially ones with authoritarian streak, will always try to convince people of a “foreign” hand to justify their actions.
Look up world history - you will find a list that goes on.
I'm sorry but I don't believe it (we are heroes only in movies) there are no "balls" in the left . I hope I'm wrong but that would mean the beginning of a revolution. 👍
What I find amazing is that there's instant action from the lawmakers and citizens without any hesitation. Like a well-oiled civilian machine based on the instant insight of there being a big threat. I tip my hat to the South Koreans.
Practice. They've done this a few times in recent memory. And they have older generations to remind them of life under dictatorship and how that was finally ended.
Education level + mandatory military service might affect peoples ability and willingness to react. And the living memory of needing to act/what happens if one doesn't.
I spent a fair amount of time in ROK (Republic of Korea), early 90s. Months, all seasons. Impressions:
- hardest working people in the world
- you want these people on your side
- disciplined, all have excellent education
- teachers are gods
- elders get respect, lots of respect
I was consulting with ROK government staff on design, build, nuclear power plants. My company was building 9 nuclear plants for them as part of 10 year transfer of technology. Now South Korea sells their version to the world. Very good plant.
I am so jealous - lawmakers that actually put the people first instead of a dictator wannabe. I would do the same except I would have to drive for days to get to DC. Take a step back - trump’s talk included using military against we the people. Prepare like you have a spine.
So I have read here that the parliament had the right to vote on this declaration. So what were the military doing stopping lawmakers accessing Parliament to do just that?
This is an incredible sight to see, the people of South Korea and the National Assembly deserve a huge congratulations for defending democracy. in a span of 2.5 hrs they came together and fought back against a lunatic.
On the other hand. In January 6 2021 we had people surrounding the capitol to prevent representatives of the people from voting on a democratically elected president
You are correct. Just look at the weak democrats questioning Bidens decision to protect his son from malicious prosecution. They are scared to death that they will be targeted by the incoming administration. And we know the repugs will be fully supportive when this happens here in February.
This image made me proud for the citizens helping their democratic leaders do the right thing, without hesitation on both parts. Brave people. May America stand so tall.
The best thing about this is that the soldiers holding the barricades clearly aren't that interested in keeping them out or there's no way they'd be able to scale the walls like that. 💜
If the military isn't preventing stuff like this it makes me wonder how strong this is. Cuz the military says that martial law will only be lifted by the President yet they're not stopping people from doing this?
I've never liked the idea of compulsory civil/military service in general, but a point in favor: when a lot of the military consists of a broad demographic of regular people just putting in their 2yrs of service.... they're probably a lot less willing to help w/ a coup, on balance
I wish this would work here. Our lawmakers would have to go on Fox or CNN for 2 days to debate it first and then have an intern see how it would effect their social media before climbing that wall
They actually do. Don't get me wrong, I dislike them as much as you probably do, but they *were* tested like this on Jan 6 2021. Each of them risked their lives to do the work of democracy that day.
Don't expect me to ever defend American politicians again. They all suck and now I feel dirty.
On Dec 3, 2024 South Korean President Yoon declared martial law, citing threats from "communist forces," sparking mass protests and bipartisan backlash. Parliament swiftly rescinded the decree, and Yoon lifted it the same day. While calm has returned, political tensions and public unrest remain high
This faced immediate backlash from both ruling/opposition parties and widespread protests. Demonstrators took to the streets clashing authorities, calling for the martial law decree to be revoked. Opposition leaders decried the move as disproportionate response/overreach of presidential power
The people we see in the ROK courtyard have worked hard for what little they have. Their children have seen that too. Their population is smaller and more educated to that effect. Their inspiration sits right across the border..'Un' Korea.
WE need to take some lessons in America. Following the rules of diplomacy & being polite to our local enemies has brought us to this precipice. It’s time to get down & dirty. No holds barred.
While elites in America cower in terror at the prospect of having a mean tweet posted about them. I hope we can learn a few lessons from the opposition over there.
😂 Schumer needs to gtfo regardless of his wall scaling abilities. "For every blue collar Democrat we lose in western PA, we'll pick up 2 moderate conservatives in the suburbs" -Schumer in 2016. We didn't forget and it's once again time to reflect on that strategy, Chuck!
As utterly fucked as South Korea's culture and government have become from the continuous US occupation they've suffered for the 70-ish years, it's inspiring how many of their politicians still remain dedicated to democracy and freedom for their people
Colorado Supreme Court judged 45 participated in sedition. SCOTUS ruled that Colorado Court did not have jurisdiction to rule for the entire Country. They did NOT say 45 was not seditious. They step stepped the issue completely.
the Law, it says "ADVOCATES" - it says nothing of guilt - it APPLIES
I am not saying that Democrats should not try. They should force the question. I just don't believe it will actually work directly. Still good to point out the law, try to enforce it, and not let Republicans take the easy way out.
I agree, but SCOTUS prevented any action and said that Colorado had to keep him on the ballot. Do you really believe they will behave differently if Democrats try again with him or with the current Speaker of the House? Or any other Republican who is elected to Congress?
If and when Trump declares martial law, I wouldn’t count on Schumer, Pelosi, or Jeffries scaling a fence to save democracy in the U.S., even if they were able.
South Korea doesn’t mess around! With their history of jailing their corrupt presidents, President Yoon will be getting well acquainted with a prison cell very soon. If only America had the gumption to do the same thing in 2021, our country would have been returned to ACTUAL greatness. FUCK MAGA
Sadly TRUMP..
MAGA..
RNP(REPUBLICAN NAZI PARTY)..have completed their destruction of the RULE OF LAW in this
country..and We the People are about to find out what happens when a crazed megalomaniac, with nuclear weapons, takes over what used to be the United States of America.
and so will the world.
Trust me, if any Yank politicians have balls like that, you're going to find out real soon, because things are about to get real bad over there real fast.
They won’t, the only thing to us to do is ride out the storm and hope we have a country on the other end. What Europe needs to do is RUN, stop relying on the US for your defense. Someone needs to keep some level of sanity.
Reminds me of the film 서울의 봄 (12/12: The Day in English) about Cheon Doo Hwan's takeover of the Korean government. Brilliant film... thankfully, today's events seem like they won't end the same way as they did 40 years ago.
And, sure enough... The original film's title means Seoul Spring, referring to the democratic uprising against former S. Korean leader Cheon Doo Hwan. The title here has been modified to say, Seoul Winter.
There’s an old saying in Korea that if you go to the top of Mt Namsan in central Seoul, and throw a pebble of the side, it will land on the head of a Kim, Lee, or Park.
My apartment is near Namsan — it’s a one-hour “hike” to the top and back — and I can confirm this claim through vigorous research.
The billionaire parasites are making their move to seize power in a dozen countries at the same time, including the US. trump is their dupe, the expendable front man, an experiment to see how far they can push it and they are gonna FAFO. Fine tuning how much abuse the people will take before revolt
Whewww... "so screwed" that is such an adroit use of the term. And, what we really do have is an opportunity to excel. I only hope that the "etc" you mention are doing something other than pounding their pud.
We need that same courage NOW more than ever! They are just letting Trump complete his coup. It is insane! I don’t understand how this is being allowed to happen!
Just so ya’ll understand- back in the day CNN would have had a camera crew on the ground with a reporter broadcasting live from the protests getting shoved around by the military. Because they would have had a lead on this story for months and would have been ready. American media is dead.
Exactly. It’s not some grand conspiracy. It’s dollar and cents and stockholders. They’re not here to inform us anymore. They’re here to make money. Well they won’t get my eyeballs or money anymore.
The 24 hour news cycle both means they have huge amounts of time to fill, and that they go with the cheapest per minute content they can. It's hillarious when people accuse me of watching too much CNN/MSNBC. I don't think cable news is a good place to get news at all.
All the "news" channels are talk shows now. Listen for an hour & you will hear them say breaking news 25 times immediately followed by now let's discuss & the breaking news will have broken either many hours earlier or even the previous day. Besides a few asides, they repeat themselves for that hour
I’m old enough to remember when troops parachuted in to Afghanistan and a reporter RAN UP TO THE SOLDIER WHO JUST LANDED and the soldier was like "sir, you’re going to have to wait".
To be fair, it has been the top story all day on CNN’s website, with frequent updates. I have no idea whether or how the tv channel has been covering the story.
Nowadays, they are super busy covering all the bull💩 that comes out of Trump’s mouth. They simply signed their own death penalty. People are DONE with their “journalism”..
Corporate MSM is privately owned without FCC Regulation thanks to dear old Reagan, McConnell, Corrupt Democrats & Republicans Deregulation & Mobsters who can buy judges police Senators Congress people & Local Legislators. Follow the assassinations of our greatest leaders without consequence.
After the fact. There has been a build up to this for a long time with no coverage. And this is the third example in less than a week (Syria, & Georgia) of MSM entirely focusing on Trump and bs political stories and not covering serious news.
I 100% agree with you on that one. I thought you meant the actual coup. I've been caught off guard. I thought this dude was conservative, but not like the former Peruvian president who did a coup.
I guess several news outlets weren’t covering it 😐
I have questions - did our intelligence agencies know? And if not, wth not?!?
There are 28,500 US troops in ROK. How can we leave them vulnerable like that?
I know South Korea is an ally, but given its location, we should do better.
According to an article that was just published TODAY. There has been rumors for months that this would happen. I’m sure our intelligence services were aware. It’s the media’s failure. They’ve eliminated all of their foreign correspondents and are entirely focused on political drama and spinning it
It's the harbinger of things to come..
Joe&Mika's deference to it was repulsive.
"News" is corporate now. If chump promises Sinclair media profits- do you think they'll care about "democracy"?
But they were beat by Bluesky and this has been rumored for months with no coverage. And still no coverage of the massive corruption of the President of South Korea. MSM is the last to know.
The people of South Korea knew this was coming for months. That’s how they could have been faster. It’s like covering the fall of the Berlin Wall and saying how could the media have covered it before? Because there was buildup for months. Back in the day reporters around the world would warn us.
Do not mistake expedience for clarity and truth. Journalists should be waiting to have all the answers before reporting. Part of why social media has been such a fount of misinformation is because of that snap reaction model that doesn’t wait for fact checking.
Deeply unpopular “incel president” attempted an autocoup. He declared martial law and attempted to arrest lawmakers. He failed to arrest them and lawmakers piled in to vote to end martial law. Troops didn’t know how to deal with protesters and lawmakers and did nothing to stop the vote.
South Korea was a military dictatorship for decades and became a democracy. I believe in the mid 80s anything that centrist or right wing in South Korea is probably just straight fascist. They’re always at risk.
When do you think we'll see the evidence that Putin is staging all of these right wing nut jobs and their attempts to takeover all these democratic countries? Trump, LePen, Orban, this assmunch in South Korea... Stinks of Putties hands.
Don't forget about the International Democratic Union. Don't get fooled by the name. The IDU is behind the elections of Orban in Hungary, Bolsonaro in Brazil, Modi in India, Erdogan in Turkey and who knows who else. It's very good at deploying democratic norms to install anti-democratic governments.
YES. I didn't know what's going on in South Korea but used to work on many American bases there. Could you educate us of why he would have to do that? Have our American forces been on standby to assist with political dissent or protests there?
A very unpopular conservative president didn't like being investigated, so he is attempting to block any opposition by using Martial Law to quell dissent and control the media (among other things). Unfortunately for him, the opposition party - called Democrats there - has majority in Parliament
Yes, we need to not only take note, but also review the "tools" we have right here in our own tool-box. In other words, before running around gathering pitchforks.., how do we, as a civilized society, deal with the incoming administration should 'things' go off-the-rails.
@schumer.senate.gov this is what’s possible when you’re serious about defending democracy & her people against tyranny & the brutality it brings. Please put down your Marquis of Queensbury rules and figure out how to find the courage to ACT. cc: @adamschiff.bsky.social @alexpadilla4ca.bsky.social
Every vote matters in local elections, House races and the Senate. The Senate decides judicial and supreme court nominations. The courts wield more power than the POTUS, just look how they stopped Biden's efforts to help with student loan relief and what happened to reproductive rights.
What does the electoral college have to do with white supremacy?
Are you just throwing it out there in hopes that it’s repeated enough and people just believe it.
The EC is designed to make a candidate have to build a coalition of states.
If not, they would only go to the most populated places
It seems our Democratic leaders/party are not up to the fight against the Republicans who just do not follow the rules. It’s like boxing with the rules against street fighters with chains and knives and guns. They ain’t gonna win that way.
That's not entirely true. Look at the large effort red states made to stifle voters since 2010 and project red map. Then the Roberts court decimated the VRA beginning in 2013 with Shelby County v Holder. Democrats can only do so much when courts and legislatures are fixing the playing field.
It should be easier for people to register and it should not take that long to verify your right to vote. I'm sorry that happened to you. Please don't forget to keep an eye on your registration, sometimes people get purged from voter rolls. Your vote is your voice, I don't want you to lose it.
Oh republicans are to blame for sure, but Dems would rather eternally stick to neoliberalism and follow the rules, meanwhile republicans don’t give a shit and are actively trying to give us an oligarchy
We can, and should, critique the Dems on their failures, even if they’re better than republicans
If we want to save democracy, we got to be willing to jump over walls, guarded by guns to vote. No one wants to die, but if I have to die, I want it to be on my terms defending democracy. Fuck you dictator! I decide!
Senator Schumer and the rest of the Democratic Party would note their deep concern for martial law and encourage people to vote next election to defeat martial law
Senate Ds should host a little junket to SKorea over break and invite some of their R colleagues in the Trump Toady caucus along (Hagerty, Hawley, Graham, Scott, etc). Call it: Finding Models of Civic Virtue Elsewhere
so many doomers in replies preemptively giving up, that is a huge part of why we are in the position we're in at all lol. wear your hope on your sleeve! it scares the fascists! I understand being tired but they take advantage of us when we express that.
It's cause you're waiting for some magical moment when the bad thing has already happened. Timing is key in events like this and you failed spectacularly
We need a forensic investigation of the vote-Trump may well have actually lost-i don't care how looney-tunes i might appear so many anomalies & we know he often tells the truth when relating a criminal act he has done or by projection blamed an opponent of doing-he said he didn't need his MAGA votes
Considering the stakes, I can't believe it's Looney Tunes to wonder if the unscrupulous guy w/the tech for self-driving cars, rockets that land themselves & his own network of satellites might be willing & able to change some 1's & 0's to help him accelerate his path to being a trillionaire.
Considering most of them don't want to hold a longer session because they'll miss a break and the majority are aged 60+ that would rather cling to power than pass the torch, I think we're cooked.
We can’t expect to see that from the GOP senate, which is likely to support all of trumps horrible and dangerous picks like Patel. With the republicans now leading it all, and we know they’re the antithesis of brave, we’re in for a very rough ride.
Most of his corruption, you called, are mostly fabricated and sometimes flat out lies created by the current president using his justice department to do all the dirty work in orders to destroy his political opponents including some people from his own party that oppose him. Get the facts straight!
He heard about Trump’s potential attempt at being a dictator and thought he’d get a head start. But democracy and the good people overcame evilness. Now to impeach his a** , hoping the ‘senate’ there aren’t self serving power hungry cowards like in U.S thus voting against a conviction
At the top of my mind:
- France ruling abortions into law
- Finland and Sweden joining NATO
- centre-left European commission being voted for even against local elections being centre-right
- right wing parties failing to do anything remarkable
- Netherlands right wing party coalition dying out
I'm sorry American politics sucks, but it's been like that for the past 80 years, pretty sure if you look outside your country you'd be able to see we're not all doomed
Agreed. Well that and the election of @donald-tusk.bsky.social in #Poland and a much needed change of government in the UK was pretty great too. People protecting their democracy is always a good look. Well done the good folk of #SouthKorea for showing a wannabe tyrant who is the boss.
Here in Japan, the ruling party lost its majority seats so they don't necessarily have an iron grip on the country. Not that we're being violently oppressed, but after decades of stagnation, a little shake up would be nice to see in the near future.
Good for him they did vote to overturn the martial law the military says they will stand down if the Pres. tells then to and the Pres.says he will lift martial law which he just brought in to deal with North Korea infiltrators. USA is not claiming NK is infiltrating.
TV news shows armed SK military breaking through windows to gain access to a building. Thousands of demonstrators are demonstrating at their Parliament calling on the pres to be impeached.
It's not entirely a lack of bravery, it's also the increasing likelihood of facing down a militarized police force that will have free reign to "protect" the powers that be however they choose.
Descendants European Dungeons, Emperors, Queens, Kings, Princes & Princesses, Peasants, Scholars, Medicine people, Poets,Writers, Hunters, kidnapped & enslaved from all corners of the world, and The First People that is who we Americans are! We are American Made, if only we'd remember...
It's okay if Koreans serve as an example to us, instead of the other way around. This morning my son doubted the power of people against the military. This evening South Korea is still free.
This is a reminder. We cannot give up our power willingly.
If I may. I think the same way as your son. It's a very, very, pleasant surprise that the Army did not make use of their guns. Also can you imagine what would have happened if citizens were allowed to carry guns with them?
Interesante caso a estudiar. No se trata de un golpista antidemócrata. Se trata de un demócrata aterrado por el ascenso de los golpistas que avanzan por vía democrática pero con la clara intención de destrozar el sistema. Aviso a navegantes ...
Look what the right wing has done in South Korea. The use of martial law in the military is never a good idea. Never not a democracy. It's gotta go man we're ever doing this their history.

"It's all Putin" meaning "all conservatives are like or wish to be like Putin" = 100% accurate
I think that person is foolish but I probably agreed with them earlier.
You see... people..get recorded... doing fucked up shit. If you provide that shit. You record it.

To be honest the closest thing to a single culprit behind conservatism is probably US Conservative Christian Churches(so: Neoconfederate Segregationists). THEY allied with Putin under Obama, and fund conservatives globally
conservatives, post-2020, have all drawn inspiration from a historical figure, not from Putin. think Germany, 30s.
Putin has zero to do with South Korea.
You can see the playbook with Israel now.

Everyone is on social media now, and they got the tech to actually go fully whack with it.
And they did. With Elons help.

Funny how big constitutional law stuff sometimes comes down to factors as dumb as "can they physically get to the floor to hold a vote"...
