Honestly I'm not sure I can face the prospect of having to build up a social media thing all over again. It's like being asked to rewrite a book you already wrote.

Come over to the blue side anyway, Ian. I've done it twice (for Mastodon and this), and maybe it's a good idea to weed out those you follow who either haven't posted in forever (or are zombies/dead), and improve the curation of your feed. We appreciate you. :-)
the problem with Twitter etc these days is people using it as a means to shill their crap books or unwanted opinion pieces - seeing followers as customers - instead of just shitposting and having fun.
Many people moved here to get away from people like you, spreading hatred and fear about a marginalised group of people. So, don't bother. Stay on Twitter where your hate is welcome.
Yes but when Twitter become such an utter cesspit of misinformation and vileness and collapses under the weight of its own disgracefulness you will have somewhere to go already.
Welcome aboard Ian. I went back to the hellscape so that I could shift my followed accounts from over there (jumped too early and there was nobody on here / Mastodon). Here's a link to help you. Just a heads up, not all connections are right, you'll have to check.
Don’t worry about it, big numbers in following mean far less than engaged users anyway. See this as an opportunity to focus on those who actually are interested in your work .etc.
It's not so hard. We old GenXers used to do this all the time. LiveJournal, Friendster, Orkut, Facebook, G+... it's only in the last decade that things stabilized.
Judging by the replies you've received to this post, I don't blame you. Which is a shame, because this seemed like it could be a less hostile alternative to the bird site.
1. It's a reasonable point. Helen Lewis was removed from the game only because of her opinions, not because of anythign she said in connection with the game.
2. He's criticising the FSU there. The FSU is no friend of trans people.
3. The article has nothing to do with him. I don't know what the subject of the panel with Julie Bindel was. I don't agree with condemning people just becuse of who they've shared a platform with.
If this is the price to pay to be able to discuss things freely I am happy to do it. Before Musk acquisition some of my tweets reached 3M views. After I have been struggling to reach 300 people. The same happened to other academics especially if liberal and pro-Ukraine.
Hey buddy have you heard of this site called Twitter? It's niche but it's been around for years and I'm sure you'll find all your terf pals over there in no time
Man, Bluesky can get really nasty sometimes… I rarely see this kind of negativity even on Twitter. It's not a normal thing, to be clear.
So it's not ok to insult someone and be nasty to them unless it's someone we don't like then it's ok? I don't think this is how it's supposed to work here.
When people are a threat to the lives and safety of people in the real world they, unsurprisingly, aren't automatically lined up for respectful treatment online.
Especially in a space that's being used as a refuge from the very hate ghost those people have enabled and promoted.
And more on topic: looks like we're heading towards a time of chaos on social media, with old things slowly falling apart and new things still in flux… I guess we'll have to get used to things being unstable and unclear for a while and try to be in many places at the same time.
I'm not worried about vanity numbers. But there are all sorts of people I met there that I hate to lose. And I don't necessarily realize it until I bump into them.
We simply do not like transphobes. We don't have to tolerate people that profit off hating marginalised communities. And we don't have to welcome them either, unless we particularly like the taste of boot.
I only follow tech people (iOS/Mac/Swift developers etc.) and people in the comments are generally friendly. I occassionally see some bad comments under posts of those with >10k followers. The worst stuff I see is when I start clicking on trends about some political events, but I try to avoid that.
Good for you. For trans ppl and many other minorities Twitter was a place where people were free to scream abuse threaten and attack us without any consequence. And the worst offenders were the transphobes and far right with huge accounts.
It's called solidarity. Genuine threats against the trans community are enabled and empowered every time an empty suit gets handed a large platform to repeat concern troll talking points of "free and open debate" on the one hand while debating nothing beyond anti-trans talking points on the other.
Look at it as simply gradually switching your output. Twitter exists because of our output. People came to you and you went to people because of that output. No extra work involved. Just a new desk.
That’s a nice way of thinking. (Also: hello, you!) Although fuck me at the vicious replies to Ian’s opening post. I thought this place was supposed to be better. I’ve not witnessed anything like that over on Mastodon to date.
perhaps I'm naive but if *I* wanted to not receive vicious replies I would simply not publish and share multiple articles suggesting trans people deserved less human rights and then join a social space where we are everybody's favourite people
I imagine that's difficult for certain journalists tho
to put this in context for white middle-class cis guys (pick any three) -
it's like going to someone's house, replacing all the expensive wine with your piss, telling everyone you see that you did it, then turning up to their next party and being surprised when they're actually quite upset with you
He's just joined a platform where trans people currently form a large proportion of the users and he has a history of being an apologist for transphobes: it's not a surprise he's not been welcomed. https://bsky.app/profile/tristangra...
Your peeps will drift by like a raft of seaweed accumulating even if you don't go looking for them (sadly the tools for importing your network got broken by Mr sparky car)
It's daunting, butit took 14 years to get where I was there. I'm not obviously going to start somewhere else at the same level. My interests and concerns have changed a lot since 2009.
If only... "waist deep" is on average.
In some parts of Twitter it is occasionally sloshing agsinst your ankles - in other parts it reaches your chin 🤢
btw Ian, there's a nice feature on Bluesky that allows you to create mute lists that others can subscribe to. Just "Add to List" from somebody's profile.
Take solace in the fact that if Bluesky's AT Protocol becomes the standard protocol for social media (as it plans to), this'll be the last time you need to, with its built in account portability.
You may find that it’s really easy for you since (I’m assuming) that you own the fox creations domain. Depending on how/where you hosted your site, it may be very straightforward to add a subdomain (eg. https://Bianca.foxcreations.com)
This is assuming I’m reading the blog correctly.
I’ve tried the same trick. The tiny snag: it’s now a somewhat old pic. One day, I’ll change it across the board, like they used to do in print mags, and I assume everyone will think I’m horribly ill.
Yeah. I felt exactly the same when I arrived. I had a few active weeks here, firing posts into the void with nobody reading them. It's depressing. Took more than a decade to build a following there. The idea of doing it all again is so depressing.

You came to the place with all the trans people who are super annoyed at what's happened to Twitter because of Elon's grudge against trans people and "wokeness" in general and you apparently have a history saying crappy things about trans people. Sorry, but what did you expect? Fawning devotion?
I think it sounded a bit more like showing up at a party and critiquing the free food than you meant it to: a lot of people have been working hard here to build and support community and you might have sounded unintentionally dismissive.
Are you like this because your ass was sealed up after a polo accident, and now the only way for you to take a shit is through your mouth? Is the ever-present essence of your own feces on your tongue why you're so hateful?
Inquiring minds, Ian. Inquiring minds.
It's the equivalent of being one level away from completing Tomb Raider or Zelda, only to realise your brother wiped your memory card for his bespoke "greatest players of the Premier League 1996/97" Fifa team.

Hopefully this place won’t deteriorate like ‘The Other Place’.

“Poor me, I have to start over here with you people” is bad behavior after being invited to a site. It should be shamed.
So should “oho! Look at the tolerant left!” bullshit like this.
I imagine that's difficult for certain journalists tho

Musk's Twitter is for YOU. Enjoy it !!

if you don’t build up followers nobody will see you negotiate away the safety of trans people,
so how about you go away and think about that
