1/ I'm sure someone has already pointed this out, but one additional thing about the tariffs being done unilaterally by the president: They can be (and almost certainly will be) reversed by the next Democratic president.

2/ So: If you're a company trying to figure out whether to invest billions in moving manufacturing to the US, one thing you have to consider is that by the time your plant gets built, the thing that would have given it a comparative advantage vanishes.
and if Canada and Mexico are on the ball (I have no reason to think otherwise) they will immediately apply a punitive (say 200%) export tax on used machinery, in particular auto manufacturing equipment
You don't even have to consider a Dem president, maybe whatever country is the potential competition cuts a deal to sell some random minerals and rename some airport Trump International and gets tariff relief in three weeks
Do you believe we will have another election in America? Would we be in this nightmare if Obama hadn’t deflated NASA with Musk and Biden would have expanded the Supreme Court?
Yeah but everybody's So greedy and shortsighted and unbound by regulation that they don't make smart decisions. We would still have a thriving manufacturing economy in America if it wasn't for the Republican party.
Exactly. Frankly they’ll probably be reversed by the next administration whoever it is. It will take way more than 4 years to get new plants built anyway so there’s no way most companies are going to make that investment.
Let's be real. The Democratics have for years warning the people. Stop blaming the Dem's we did this. The people thought TRUMP was charming. We thought TRUMP would set things right. We thought TRUMP was kidding. It's time that we the people tell Dem and GOP no more. Our TAX DOLLAR not a billionaires
Who is going to take these new manufacturing jobs? We’re getting rid of immigrants. Are people going to get excited about manufacturing jobs that will be replaced by robots and automation in the next decade?
3/ This, in turn, means that you're less likely to invest that money in building that manufacturing plant.
Which, in turn, means that the form of the tariffs further offsets whatever modest positive domestic impact they would have—which, in any case, is outweighed by their massive negative impacts.
Lovely thread. This is of course the fatal flaw in Trump's reasoning, and in the Congress's humoring him in his folly. And if Trump himself knows this, is he doing it for purely destructive reasons? 2020 Revenge against the country or perfidy of foreign allegiance, or both?
Maybe with deregulation the bar to entry vis-à-vis building new plant can be offset by deregulation and being able to build and run extremely dangerous facilities with no worker rights so it's a win - win situation.
That's really how they think. It's ghoulish just seeing stated openly like that.
So, instead of building things they won’t need later, maybe those businesses should instead direct political donations to the Democratic Party, which creates a sane, stable, and growing economic environment every time it’s in power?
The economic destruction that will take place in the next four years will also negate any positive effect of moving manufacturing over here. America is only the biggest market worth moving stuff over here if Americans have money to spend.
Agree but also the next election round could see Congress unilaterally end the tariffs sooner.
But if you're a small business needing a Chinese widget, these new prices are going to very sticky.
No matter what happens next, no US business can afford to trust the governmental frameworks
Once you realize his orders come from Putin it all makes sense.
Tank US & EMEA economies & they will no longer support Ukraine. Everything is for the glory of Mother Russia. Meanwhile it's a win win for Trump. He gets to buy depreciated assets, balloon our deficit, ruin allies, & make Daddy happy!
I'm not arguing that at all. End of the day, sociopaths are dumb as a box of rocks. It's just these tariffs will hurt everyone's economy, and hopefully EMEA continues to unite, not only weathers the storm, but comes out thriving.
Yes. America used to be reasonably consistent, trustworthy and stable when it came to business/ trade policy. The loss of that is the loss of our “secret sauce.” It is why I and others contend The Era of America Is Over.
Imagine the world we'd be living in Reed medical center doctors had been slightly less competent in October of 2020 when a certain patient came down with covid...
Well, you’re going to block me, but I don’t think it’s a unfair criticism. Trump is already enacting Project 2025, and he’s voiced his desire for a third term numerous times. With Congress and SCOTUS seemingly willing to give him that power, people are skeptical of “after Trump” thinking.
Emphasis and concentration should be placed on impeachment and criminal charges on all who have broken laws. There needs to be more than 4 Republican senators that agree to sanity. It is not unfair to say that trump is doing everything he can to stay in power for the rest of his life.
Even if he rules as dictator for life, he is seventy-eight years old, unlikely to be vigorous for much longer, and seems completely disinterested in building institutions that can outlive his own cult of personality.
It may not be democracy, but there will be open contest for leadership again soon.
Look at how the elections on Tuesday turned out. Dekalb county in Illinois saw democrats will all 49 races. People are pissed off. They can try and keep trump in power for a third term, but I’m not convinced he will finish this term. A democratic wave would lead to his impeachment in 2 years.
Trump was terrible in his first term, and people re-elected him four years later. I hope the people stay mad and stop him from a third term. I hope they impeach his ass, but as 65k votes may be thrown out in NC and Republicans still winning in Florida…I’m not just as optimistic.
Even if he does not leave the office, the point remains. An autocrat is not predictable, policies may change tomorrow and a company may get screwed just because. Investors like predictability. At best, this will attract short term speculative investment.
The thing they need to realize is that it doesn’t really matter what DonOld does, what matters is what Congress does. Congress could stop these tariffs at any time.
I think it's a great point, there's so much ridiculous decision making right now that will eventually be reversed by saner minds. It's such a terrible waste of time and energy, and just destabilizes things and divides people. The scales will right themselves, but at what cost?
And also for the purposes of this point it doesn't matter because manufacturing companies are definitely not thinking like that because if Trump turns America into a dictatorship the primary consumers of everything just got wiped out and there is no one to sell to.
I mean he's going to try to not leave office for sure but if he runs again I'm going to laugh so hard. The only way he stays in office is if the military backs him and he becomes an actual literal despot and chains himself inside the White House.
You’re right, of course, about the time it’d take to get facilities up & running, & by then, a new regime in place. While 🍊🤡 doesn’t seem to be adept at gaming this out w/long range planning, his underlying assumption seems to be he’ll be around either in his 3rd term or POTUS for life, so why not?🤷🏻♀️
It's very unlikely they'll still be in place for the next Democratic president, but your point about the uncertainty this creates for businesses is spot on. The damage to our economy and global trade will be done and a lot of it will be permanent
Josh...I wouldn't be so clueless as to say he'll never leave office because he is an unhealthy 79yo. But isn't it fair to wonder if America will still have an election in 2028 - not fear that whoever is actually calling the shots leading up to then - won't make up a reason to declare marshall law?
See that's the real market risk. US foreign policy is as of right now fucked for decades, so no worries about sanity undoing all this, but there are a bunch of other reasons why businesses will avoid the US like the plague. Fascism is bad for business.
I just don't understand how you can watch him talk and think that he's capable of this level of cunning. His brain is made of stale dog biscuits, he can't think more than about five minutes into the future.
Now that's interesting. Had not thought of that and I'm sure many companies have cash to spare after the last 2-3 years. My question is do you think that is a scheme a little too complicated for this admin to have devised?
Agree that this is a strategy for billionaires. They call it playing the stock market for a reason. Politicians have inside information. SEC deal with it. Neither party wants that insider trading to stop.
And that dumbass Eric’s tweet about how countries should rush to negotiate over tariffs only reinforces how impermanent they are. Why would anyone commit a penny to building factories here, especially when we’re also arbitrarily revoking visas?
Doubly unhelpful in this case as most foreign firms wouldn’t make big investments in a gangster dictatorship with declining consumer buying power either.
As an estimator for an electrical contractor that works in industrial electrical construction this is what I’ve been saying they aren’t going to build here unless they already planed to or want to carry favor. They will wait it out. Our only manufacturing work is companies who need a us based plant.
Or who have gotten massive government grants to build in the us. Or have to for logistical reasons. As in it’s cost prohibiting to ship over the ocean or has to be delivered asap.
Yep. trump wants to be putin and is trying to create his own russia. The only way to do that is to gut the economy, regulators, judiciary, etc., and have the sellout broligarchs head the hollowed-out economy.
Making the rest scared shitless and poorer is part of the plan.
No sane company will invest in a country where you can be demoted from ally to enemy within days, and where tariffs or even hiring procedures can be newly invented or abolished every few years, dependent on the whims of crazed elderly despots.
That has to be considered as well. When law has become an empty shell -
There are enough statistics proving that corruption and lawlessness seriously hurt economy instead of 'greasing' it. Only absolute turds win in this game.
By law (as of now) he has to leave. But he hasn’t shown me any signs that he cares about laws, unless he can find a way around them. I just hope that it can be fixed before he becomes king donny.
Unfortunately the law slides off him with no after effects. How is it that he can become the leader of the armed forces, while at the same time ineligible to serve because he's a felon? How come all the laws he has broken to date have no repercussions? What's stopping him at his point?
Didn't Biden leave a lot of Trump 1 tarrifs in place? I get this point, but I can also see a supine Dem party validating this path so firms avoid whiplash. And we just trudge along pariah state stagnation
Some of the targeted China ones (some of which he actually increased), that's about it. The Trump 1 tariffs were nothing like the blanket tariffs on most of the world now, it's comparing apples to giraffes.
We were at full employment, so who do they think are available to work in manufacturing? Me? A retired manufacturing engineering person who has no training in modern robotics and has to be trained to even understand the order of operations.
No company should be considering large capital outlays in the current economic climate based on the whims of a lame duck president who doesn't know anything about economics, manufacturing, or supply chains. If it wasn't already part of your business strategy, it shouldn't become part of it now.
Also, trump won't be POTUS or probably even still alive, when the new US factory is built, so why take that investment hit with no guarantee that the game rules will still be the same?
Here’s the problem. Bush the Elder sank the economy. Clinton saved it. Bush the Dumber ruined the economy. Obama saved it. Dump crashed the economy and killed hundreds of thousands. Biden saved us. Now Dump is destroying the economy . This teeter-totter is why no one will ever trust us again.
Yup. People cannot plan business abroad based on 4 years of voting from the USA.
We are all learning to shop differently. Mark Carney said just shifting a family (not individual) shopping of 50$ a week to Canadian products keeps $39b in Canada.
Changing my shopping habits to buy Canadian first and avoid US gets easier every time I shop. I’ve found new favourites and I’m not going back. I am sorry America, I really truly am, but I’m not the only one doing this.
Yup. That’s what everyone in my family is doing that isn’t conservative. They also aren’t going back. They are spending just a little bit of extra time to find Canadian made goods from every sector. I’m living in Europe at the moment and I’m not shopping or buying USA goods at all - which are
Surprisingly common here. But I’m done. I’m not going back. I will not spend a dollar on American goods. I’m also trying to shift to smaller business owners for things like clothing, skin care, etc from non-American sources. Trying to shop ethically and smarter from now on.
America. Most stuff can be sourced elsewhere if we don’t have it. In fact, I don’t think America has any raw materials that can’t be sourced elsewhere.
Your leader is on a suicide mission. Everyone else is learning fast to survive and thrive without the USA. 😞
I agree. I always look at the 'Made In' label on everything I buy now. 1. Canada, 2. Anywhere but the U.S., 3. Can I do without? 4. Never a red state. 5. Refer to #3. And this will be my life from now on...not just 4 years. No trust exists anymore. #elbowsup
Trump could change his mind next week. Never mind a Democratic president. 50% higher, 300% lower, who knows? The conditions for investment require stability. No one is going to invest anything in this country with a madman at the helm. It’s economic suicide.
Such a valid point. The health of our economy is at the whim of a guy who makes decisions based on who gives him more money or who was mean to him that week. Uncertainty is the only thing we can be certain of from trump.
Oh come on. My Roomba can remember what parts of the room it’s been to and dock itself when it begins to sundown. My Roomba is 10x as intelligent as Trump. (/s)
Right. Yet close to 4 years of this nonsense if it stays and keeps up may be negated by a future Prez yet they cannot simply mandate the damages be reversed. In other words, decades will be needed after four years of this to reverse the damages if even possible.
I respectfully disagree. Trump will roll back the tariffs by saying he won and countries have backed down — HOWEVER, he and his cronies will know in advance and start buying assets on the cheap. Even Putin will get in on the action.
The other problem is that trading partners all said this the first time. Then the American people voted him in again. Now they can’t trust the US. trump could be gone in four years but then another trump clone could get voted in again four years later. They now are abandoning the US permanently.
True, but not exactly enough to inspire hope. Our standing in the world could become quite bi-polar, alliances with us will be seen with no guarantees of stability.
It already has become bi-polar. Other countries are already talking about forming groups or pacts that don’t include the United States. Trump will try to form a new organization like Nato, made up of the US, Russia, Saudi, China, and North Korea.
Repost the Warren video. The tariffs are a distraction to pass this Republican tax cut for the billionaires -- that's why they're cutting all kinds of programs in addition to medicaid, medicare and social security -- so they can pay for this billionaire tax cut: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/RZ-nl2Nhy9U
I did notice that a lot of the businesses who pledged to invest in America had pledged to do the same with the last trump regime. Not sure even one factory was built.
Wouldn’t companies want other ppl to put their money into the investment — not use their cash? Who’s going to invest in that? We have massive open jobs in manufacturing NOW, so they want the headache of trying to run a factory on a barely-there workforce? That could unionize at anytime?
The regulations on factories, the cost of insuring factories , the potential news scandals about forcing American workers to take on double 12 hr shifts, work thru a hurricane, work with Covid/measles, or polluting middle America. Why would they ever build here?
True. —But Why Should Americans Accept The Unfolding Destruction Of World’s Best/Biggest U.S. Economy And Their Personal Financial Bankruptcies/Suffering—Bc. Trump Is A Fucking Unhinged Lunatic -WHO COULD BE STOPPED BY GOPs CONGRESS MAJORITY NOW! BUILD OR DESTROY U.S. ECONOMY—HOW IS THIS A CHOICE !!
I am going to lobby for the next Democratic administration Office of Pay Back. Every single day will be spent personally going after and destroying people like Musk, Holman, Miller, Rubio, Hegseth, Vought, GOP Congressman and all of their families to ensure that they they dearly for the destruction.
As everyone knows, Americans want to pay more for groceries and necessities, in order to have the richest among us pay less in taxes. Without having to resort to paying accounts to reduce the bill; so working class and middle class tax payers can subsidize their write offs.
Because of this insane ahole, and our very partisan politics, America has become an unstable bet for other countries. We will never be looked at as the leaders of the free world again.
Josh you’re kinda spot on. But it isn’t just the *next president* that can undo the tariffs. It’s the Congress.
So if u were a business, I’d just start donating to Democrats so that they can reverse all these policies in two years when they take the House and Senate.
This is very true but the S&P dropped more than 10% in just 2 days of these tariffs.
I don't think many people are looking 4 years ahead, because they know if the tariffs continue by then they'll have just lived through a 3 year dirty-thirties hobo-city railcar-riding depression.
Too late and why the world should ever trust us?! If anything Congress must act and all we need a few GOPs with spines join
Democrats and reverse this madness @lazytato.bsky.social
Naturally but it takes 4 fucking years of total DESTRUCTION not only here but world wide!! No one wants to deal with us but totally agree! We have the DERANGED orange blob that that has NO fucking knowledge of anything!
Yep. And all the back pay... the lawsuits over homes and cars lost. The whole student loan debac... This is just a huge mess. NO MORE REPUBLICANS, EVER! There's not a spine or an independent mind among the GOP. They're all IDIOTS. Just... NO!
While true, it will be far too late to save this country.
We are not going to bounce back from this republican economic crash.
No one will ever trust this country again for any reason.
4 years is a long time, the damage done by this administration and congress (do nothing and cede control) looks as if it could last decades. The loss of institutional knowledge alone will take a very long time to recover from. I was looking at retiring in a couple of years and now fear that my 1/2
Funny thing, this is not what I was taught as a child in the 60s. Retirement starting at 55-57 years old. What a crock pot of shit we have created for the love of money and power verses people and community. 2/2
It doesn’t matter. Other countries aren’t willing to place the well-being of their economic systems in the hands of a few uninformed morons from Wisconsin. The fact that Americans voted twice for an adjudicated rapist and a felon shows just how digitally lobotomized and misinformed they are.
Not all Americans. I’ve warned people about him since before he was even in office the first time. This country is massive, we’ve got gerrymandering and voter suppression committed by one party for decades if not centuries. We’re being held hostage by the cruelest, dumbest people in the country.
I agree. It takes time and money to build those factories. And I would add that the dumbest is changing his mind to often to take on this bet. Add unions to the mix. Nothing is gonna happen.
At that point the damage is done to our relationships with our allies. By the time anything is course corrected they will have new alignments and relationships in place.
oh yes. Saw a video buy a small business guy, imports steel boxes , his design, from China. The Chinese made them to his order, finished them and he just adds his stuff to them . Said they cost him 1/10 of what US firms quoted him and they wanted minimum….50% tariff still cheaper.
The loss in our standing in the eyes of the rest of the world is something that can't just be fixed by the next administration. They might feel relieved to have someone sane back in office, but why risk rebuilding the relationship when another nut job is possibly 4 years away?
I don't know. How can we know that the next president won't be a psycho? I think the US should make political reforms to limit the damage that a single individual can make. That includes changes in the Constitution. Until then, the economic uncertainty will remain.
The USA will NEVER be fully trusted, if a lying POS like him could win over a decent woman, who foretold what would happen if stupid people believed a con man like him, & voted him back in.
Everything she stated about his "plans" is coming true now...
It's always harder to build than it is to tear down. It will take a while to wind them down... Negotiations have to happen, companies have to rethink. It's just not as easy as it sounds.
Adding to that: building manufacturing structures is even less attractive because many of the components needed for such manufacturing come from other countries with high tariffs.
And all of this presupposes companies have the financial ability to build manufacturing structures. Most don’t.
I think it will be too late. The US has eroded its position to influence morally or economically. The world can not assume it will recover its sanity and needs to more to safer options.
It's even worse. Trump is mercurial and chaotic. He will likely remove many of these tariffs himself--including the one that would have helped your new factory.
They can. And will. But…america has lost credibility and respect. Once burned…the World is reorganising and america is not dictating the terms this time.
We had this conversation yesterday, why would you invest in a plant you did not have in your plans, knowing it might take a years to complete, when you could have a different political landscape in 2 years or 4?
It's as if he's never manufactured anything. And he hasn't.
Unfortunately, the transfer of more wealth from the bottom to the top will be done by then. People who are struggling cannot sustain the losses while the rich buy up the tanked stocks and land like flies on shit. Fuck the stock market and the rich. Goal=2 classes, rich and poor.
Providing the people get another chance to vote..and it's no guarantee that any lesson have been absorbed.
Observation 2:
Increasing social complexity creates greater capacity for boundless stupidity and a higher risk that some of us will be hoodwinked by charismatic imbeciles
What next Democratic POTUS? You do understand that voting doesn’t remove dictators, correct? We’re in this for at least 2 decades unless someone figures out how to remove him by other means.
The problem is It's Too Late Now & only first-75 days. Next REAL President what where how will USA look like &or be?? To me this is typical Dictator Dismantling & Sabotage USA in order to MAKE RUSSIA GREAT AGAIN via Trump47 for Putin.
It won't matter by then, we already lost several F-35 deals worth billions. Every small business working to supply parts, servicing, fluids/fuels/consumables for those just lost massive investments, contracts, forecasts etc that entire system is GONE. If he reversed course NOW we'd still be fucked.
They'll just pledge loyalty and pay what it is he demands, just like the law firms and republican representatives, and he'll lift specific tariffs for specific items, and he'll have his win. Remember, this is a sick and very small man. This isn't even about economics for him. It's about playing God.
America's reputation will still be in the toilet, though. That shocked rage isn't going to just go away, and our alliances will take decades to repair.
It will take two generations to erase the shit-stain TFG is smearing all over America today.
What you are writing sounds right. But the international damage is done. A company can not rely on a change of important policies every 4 years. It is not sustainable.
In fours years, what do you think will be left to save at this rate?? WHY do Dems have to keep cleaning up after repubs break and s*** on everything? And how many times do Dems have to clean up after THE SAME GUY?!?!?
Yes, this is a good point, though I have bad news for you about Joe Biden/the Democrats and the 2017-20 Trump tariffs & all the other mercantilist policies.
Exactly why other countries have little faith in the US anymore. We are an unstable, unreliable, untrustworthy partner. Changing policy every 4 years is terrible for commerce. Republicans blow everything up when they're in power, Dems fix it, then back to GOP nihilism.
No, but we would have said that in 2008 about the scale of tariffs on China & blowing up the WTO court system & withdrawing from trade agreements (TPP) we had initiated & negotiated, & then Obama & Biden normalized all of that, so I’m skeptical of what the reversion point would really be now
I doubt they will be dropped unilaterally simply because the next president has a ton of work to repair the diplomatic/international relations damage to reestablish trade.
Big question is do they unilaterally remove (because it’s good to stop punching oneself in one’s own face) or keep them until negotiate bilateral removal with other countries who impose retaliatory tariffs
Every single other country in the world is going to start working with each other and against us.
By the time a Democrat takes office again, the rest of the world will have moved on with their own supply chains, and we will be out in the wilderness.
Another question is whether ROW starts emulating Trump tariff chicanery. Because the spaghetti bowl will be harder to untangle if they do. Retaliating against Trump is fine, but applying tariffs more broadly will make restoring low-tariff default much harder.
It's a dilemma for Democrats in blue collar states who have relied on unions and manufacturing workers for a century. Elissa Slotkin on NPR yesterday just couldn't stop saying that sometimes tariffs are good but not like this.
And he’s associating with the kind of dick-taters that will give him weapons to fire on Americans when the time comes.
Don’t think it’s not in the plan.
You are assuming
1. That there will be another election
2. That it will be a real election where people can actually vote who are not conservatives
3. That the real votes will bd honestly counted and
4. Be allowed to elect a Democrat
But will the next president be able to convince other nations that the U.S. can be trusted? As an individual, my expectations of U.S. reliability will remain low.
And the next Dem President is going to have to do a fuck of a lot more than just remove tariffs before any country will deal with the USA again. It was too easy for 47. Congress needs to step in and severely limit those kinds of powers. THEN the world might deal with the USA again.
🇨🇦
Presuming that there is a next election, the cowards in the GOP caucus, combined with bought and paid for supreme Court justices might just mean that Donnie's attempt at a permanent third term might come to fruition. Let's all pray that that isn't the case
I agree. Unless the two party and electoral college systems are changed and the present Republican Party decimated, trust will not be a word associated with the US. Such a shame. And it only took 2 months.
You think non-Americans trusted you after Obama embraced Bush’s wars and impunity and ended up embracing the man? Or after Klanmala sought the Cheneys’ endorsement?
WSJ reported Harley Davidson moved some production to Thailand as a result of Trump’s first term tariff wars. Companies are more apt to invest in stock buybacks than factories.
Keep your eye on the ball. There isn't going to be presidents in the U.S. if you don't fix what's directly in front of you. You're drowning, don't worry about what's for breakfast tomorrow. Get out of the damn water.
Close to 4 years should be enough for the world-wide commodity flow to find new ways, that means the US will not be the most important trade partner of any other economy any more - the US left the playing field deliberately and will it find difficult to re-enter.
Not always. Esp if other countries reciprocal our tariffs, we'd be putting ourselves in an even weaker position without an agreement by the other countries to do the same. What sane leader would give up a position of power over a former bully? Biden even kept some of 47's first tariffs.
To our friends and allies around the world: You can count on it. As one individual, I cannot control this. I now see us as one world that must work together for the health and good of everyone, every animal, and the planet. 🌏
Those who see it similarly, you are my chosen family.
I think the world is EXHAUSTED that every four years its fait is at risk due to the potential corruption of a new administration. I know I am. It has never been like this before #trumpass there was at least a common desire to preserve our democracy.
Do we even have to look that far or to the hypothetical of a Democratic president? Trump's own arbitrary, mercurial decision-making, combining grievance, arm twisting, and contempt for law, already fuels uncertainty and may discourage investors with global markets from moving production here.
Plus if he's going to give exemptions to certain companies, it would be much easier to angle for an exemption. It seems like plenty of CEOs are willing to kiss orange ass. They risk pissing off tons of Americans who will boycott them into oblivion for kissing said ass.
But can our country (and the rest of the world) last that long and will it be too late by then to reverse not only the economic damage but also the environmental damage?
