i’d have to read the article to get a sense. her other headlines don’t seem reactionary. this headline could be tongue in cheek. but i was still curious…
It was weirdly swapping back and forth between stating facts like higher costs and finger waving about buying designer snacks from Trader Joe's.
Noting that millenials are spending more because kids but fence sitting because avocado toast.
“You mean the younger generations are spending their money on FOOD?! How will they ever save up to buy a house? They should budget their money better!”
If splurging counts as the few days I don't get pasta, rice, or a cheap frozen pizza because everything else is too expensive for me to afford any of my bills?
"Younger generations spend more on groceries than other categories"
No shit. Everybody spends more on groceries than other categories. Companies are price-gouging and blaming it on "inflation." They say wages are going up, but I'll believe that when I see it on my pay stub.
I'm part of the problem, I splurged on stuff to make sushi at home this weekend, but then I'm doing rice, beans, carrots and oatmeal during the week to make up for it 🥲
Hah! Jokes on them (and us)! Global climate change will take Camembert and other posh cheeses away, and THEN what will Millennials and Z'ers splurge on?
That's bullshit GOP propaganda. The inflation rate has fallen every year under Biden, and is expected to continue to fall unless you-know-who gets back into the Oval Office and effs up the inflation rate again like he did last time.
I didn't say that. But the article says "No matter their preferences, all generations are feeling the pinch from inflation at grocery stores. Everyone is spending more than they were in previous years" which is 100% false, as is their strong implication that inflation is getting much worse.
I still don't get the 'avocado toast as a symbol of decadence' thing. Tennessee isn't exactly a tropical progressive haven, but avocadoes are CHEAP here. Like, avocado toast is a great cheap breakfast. wtf? 0_o
$22 several times a week is about $88. In a year that's $4.6k. Let's be generous and imagine you could buy a house for $500k back then. At 10% deposit that's... 10 years of no avocado toast.
Periodicals needed to find something that younger generations were doing to "explain" why they weren't buying houses or being able to save for retirement or having big families. So they looked for something that they were doing that older generations supposedly weren't.
I think the misunderstanding is that out-of-touch boomers see $tarbucks selling avocado toast for $8 a serving and think that's what we're talking about when we say we have avocado toast every morning. What's actually happening is I'm buying a $1.50 avocado and cutting it in half for two breakfasts.
It came from an article where some wealthy guy talked about that he stopped having avocado toast every morning. But his wasn't 8 it was like 20 or something. Then there was another stupid article that latched on to the taint of that one.
I believe avocado toast shaming first picked up steam in Australia and other Commonwealth countries where avocados are expensive imports and nobody bothered to make it make sense in the US where avocados are cheap.
"Those ungrateful children are buying food for themselves- back in my day we went to the grocery store to buy more food than any single person in the house could eat." Grimms brother fairytale ahh boomer written article
The press has been printing story after story about food inflation for the last two years and now they're shaming young adults for paying those prices?
"Millennials and Gen Z are doing something we never thought they'd be able to do: eating food. Elon Musk claims the only reason they can do it is wokeism. And a tech startup has come up with a sure fire way to ensure Millennial and Gen Z wages will never be enough to buy food again! Read it here!"
I see that and I'm old.. the day my then girlfriend (now wife of 38 years) moved in, she asked if she could buy a box of cereal. that was splurging for her.
Well this late boomer/gen x/jones or whatever the hell I am, is trying to make it on $1245 a month. I splurge on ramen noodles, mac & cheese and potatoes to make it at least three of the 4 weeks of the month. We're in the same boat sister.
I've been getting YouTube ads for Instacart now offering Klarna payments. Literally advertising how you can buy your groceries on layaway. How does anyone think society is doing okay?
The body of the article is actually worse because it reveals that it’s not ironic and it’s saying those dang kids just spend too much on fancy snacks and drinks
aside from the clickbait headline (which, to my understanding are usually not written by the same person who writes the article) the article isn't bad.
It's describing a survey where gen y and z were saying they feel like they're "splurging" on groceries due to the spike in food price. The article is largely sympathetic to those generations' perspective.
I have decided that when it comes time for me to be euthanized because I can no longer afford routine medical bills which would not be an issue in almost any other country, I would instead prefer to be loaded into an anti-aircraft canon and fired at literally any private jet.
Have you read the article? It's worse than the headline suggests. It's about how people have the audacity to buy themselves treats as well as bare-minimum sustenance foods.
This is literally true for a friend of mine. Outwardly she looks like she is doing okay. But to make ends meet, the bulk of her diet is from the food bank.
I was hoping this was another victim of editors choosing inflammatory headlines, but the article really is just framing rising food costs millennials and zoomers only wanting to eat luxury foods. At least they don't bring up avocado toast
It's an article about how Millennials and, especially, Gen Z are choosing to spend extra money on pricier premium snacks and beverages rather than traditional groceries
Not a great article and is definitely clickbait. They should probably look more into the people that can afford these pricier snacks and stuff and see if they have supplemented income from parents or something rather that lumping us all in one category together
Or they could just shut the fuck up with this bad-faith premise... because there is really no need for you to carry water for assholes or try to legitimize their wet fart of a "study".
>The typical American household now needs to spend $445 more on groceries a month to purchase the same amount of goods they were spending a year ago, according to a report from Moody's.
comrades, do not take "eat the rich" literally! because of extensive intake of caviar, most of the rich are too high in mercury to safely eat. instead, mulch the rich for legume fertilizer, the plants will filter out the worst of the chemicals found in the rich and provide healthy plant proteins!
most of em are gonna be tough and stringy, but if you cook em in like a slow cooker or a instant pot or something you can have some nice pulled billionaire sammiches with a lil bbq sauce
I mean when I have all this excess money to splurge from selling houses for 10x what I paid for them and cleverly not eating so much avocado toast, what else should I splurge loose dollas on?
entertainment? holidays? healthcare? obvi not, I'll get bread and value brand cheese BC I'm a motherfucker!

It's not even a splurge to get sushi instead of a big mac now
Truly sucks
I wish I could buy my own food too though
The monthly charity food boxes can only bring me things I’m allergic to
So my choices are starvation or anaphylaxis
What the fuck
In a world which could feed everyone on the planet if not for greed

Not a big fan of pork myself but... I can adapt. 😊
And we have 2 FT jobs, supporting 2 teens. And instead of being middle class, I feel like we are on the edge of poverty.
From the article (https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-gen-z-splurge-groceries-spending-inflation-gen-z-boomers-2024-4):

back in my day, we just died if we didn't eat for long enough.
I’m glad your friend is able to go there and get the bulk of her food
The silent heros.
if your income is such a baby fart that the concept of saving up for anything is a bad joke, it's impossible to "waste" your money
