In college we played a game called "Scary Drive" where we'd drive down remote gravel roads at night and play the donnie darko soundtrack lol
I saw it in a theater with fewer than a dozen people, & almost all of us hung out in the lobby talking about it until we were asked to leave. Never had that happen before.
It wasn't life-changing but I found it captivating enough to watch it until the end. Definitely more my style than other forms of "scary" movies.
I remember liking it but can really only remember: Frank the rabbit, the ending, and that scene where they're talking about Smurfette
I think I remember Southland Tales more actually
• enjoyed it
• at times didn’t know wtf was going on
• thought provoking enough to keep me mulling it over for a few days afterwards.
I would recommend it with the caveat that it’s definitely not for everyone.
I’ve seen it so many times - and, imo, it still works. It has such a unique and unsettling vibe.
Except, I am not aware of me setting any buildings on fire... in this timeline at least
Donnie Darko is meant to be watched on cable at midnight while half awake. It's how the theatrical cut was intended it to be seen, I swear.
But I didn't watch it when it first came out.
but i remember a lot of people talking about the right way to watch it (multiple editings?), but that was too much for me to care
Seeing his character be a pedophile was hillllllarious to me. The rest of the movie is deeply thought provoking, and has an excellent soundtrack.
Am kinda ambivalent towards it. Didn't particularly like it all that much but it's not like it was a bad movie. I've seen better and I've seen worse. It was ok
Not been bettered as a time loop movie as Tenet demonstrated.
Which makes it a worthwhile film to watch.
Meanwhile the studio-imposed cut of Southland Tales is a mess, while Richard Kelly's Cannes cut is a timeless masterpiece.
Richard Kelly's vision is a singular thing.

Been meaning to rewatch for years.
I don't really understand extreme enthusiasm for it, tho.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor, tho! Hard to keep one's eyes off him!
I have no idea why, but at the time it came out I managed to think it was a crime movie about an undercover agent.
But then, we had a two year old and a new baby cooking, so we weren’t paying as much attention to the outside world as we might have at other times.
I never saw that, either.
Didn’t get it first time.
Second time found it really unnerving for some reason.
Director's Cut: hate it.
Theatrical Cut: weird, ambiguous, provocative.
Director's Cut: "Everybody thought I was being weird, ambiguous, and provocative because the studio made me cut the freshman philosophy exegesis that I literally had a character read to the viewer."
Director’s cut: hate it
I've heard of it via film class and read the summary (almost a decade ago🤔) and details for it in my text book. But never saw the movie. Seemed a little freaky and reading about the ending made me feel really sad and made me want to avoid watching it to avoid feeling really down.
For those of you who don’t, well, I sometimes doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.
self impressed
I really don't know. I watched it just once, many years ago.
It's indeed a very weird and sad movie, even unintentionally scary sometimes.
But isn't bad.
But as I started studying film and storytelling more... The more and more I grew to see more of the flaws & my it lost most of its shine to me. 🤷
I am fully committed to Sparkle Motion.
Soundtrack is also fantastic.
Also, the old early 2000s flash website for it was really cool.

Other than that, no impression.
I like rewatching it every now and then. Plus, that cast!
And my teacher in college hadn't seen the movie, so he kind of took my analysis at face value 😉
Here's a rough unfinished track of mine from 20 years ago that samples from the movie: https://soundcloud.com/stungeye/wally-glutton-a-chilly-draft

I remember a weird ass movie with some good music. But I hate a bootstrap paradox
But it’s been at least 20 years since I watched.
Patrick Swayze was the goat.
His portrayal of a right wing con artist pedo was not given enough credit for its accuracy.
Also I’m pretty sure I found the very real book that inspired this movie-
"Why are you wearing that stupid human suit"
That Echo and the Bunnymen cover of People are Strange is pretty great though
