one underrated difference between this trump run and his previous two is that the sense that he is having any fun whatsoever is almost nonexistent this time around

I think this is correct, though I’d emphasize more his anxiety over his legal liabilities. I think making those go away is his primary motive for running again. There’s a lot of people around him who are power hungry and want to weaponize both his base and his weaknesses for themselves.
I hope Trump's loss on Nov. 5 is topped off Nov. 26 by his sentencing to prison by Judge Merchan. Trump thinks he's depressed now, but just wait... Monstrous fucker deserves to shrivel up and die alone and forgotten in a cell.
the aint-i-a-stinka contempt made abandoning the system fun, like a celebratory nihilism that also did the work of mocking the gravity of his opponents and diminishing his more ominous traits. but by pitching everything at glowering resentment now, he's only leaning into the image of him as a threat
That's why the dance rally, isn't it? That's how desperate the routine is making him feel. He didn't think he could pretend to understand one more question.
I have a real hard time understanding why these guys act like they do, but knowing they never seem happy is probably a significant part of the equation
I mean, I feel like the first run was for fun, the second was for power, and this one is just to keep himself out of prison. Can't imagine it's easy to force right wing slop as every day topics and jokes when you're in a state of desperation.
His base has failed him, it's not a good base, he is not like them. A president needs to represent the entire country and needs to be more upfront with people even if it comes at the risk of being misunderstood.
He's fighting desperately to avoid prison... because when he loses this election, all bets are off and justice may(I say MAY) take its long delayed course...
Let’s be real though, he’s probably not going to jail even if he’s convicted and the convictions are upheld. He’s sufficiently old and sick that a trained monkey could keep him out of the big house.
He doesn’t actually want the job. Too much work, and he’s tired and fundamentally lazy. He just needs it for his ego (he must win or at least be perceived to have won) and for legal reasons (his many indictments magically go away!).
He wants "the job" in the sense that he wants the title, the perks, the deference, the celebration, the immunity. He absolutely does not want the work, the duties, the responsibilities.
Also, he needs the money, and as president he can keep the grifty gravy train going for 4 more years.
And I think he thought Vance would do everything for him but I think he gets Vance would do everything for Vance and that's super jarring and his brain can't wrap around it.
Absolutely. Every awful thing he’s calling for now doesn’t even seem to be because he thinks fascism is a ball, but pure “if I don’t win I’m going to jail. If I’m lucky.”
It's true. They used to like to go see his rallies because it was entertainment. Now it's just bizarre and he sounds so low-energy, as he liked to call Jeb Bush.
Man won on accident. Managed to grift himself deeper into trouble as president. Has to run again simply to avoid spending the rest of his life in court.
It’s also why he’s all in on Project 2025. He’s ceding all the other levers to the weirdos because he just can’t be asked.

But no.
We Dems must be the stupidest folks on earth to make the same mistake in 2024 as we made in 2016.
That’s going to be the real fallout of all of this.
They went full fascist and it didn’t move a fucking poll one digit.
People will start drawing down lines in their own families after this one. I am.
Win or lose it is broken.
Just let me go home
This is the worst trip I've ever been on
2020: I'm very afraid of legal consequences, but it's still hypothetical
2024: If I don't get back into office I'm dying in prison
That's what they call a Big Yikes™.
Also, he needs the money, and as president he can keep the grifty gravy train going for 4 more years.
There is a simple option for him. I hope he spends the rest of his days in abject misery.
