i am a professional politics knower and without passing judgment on today’s little argument i will say that i agree with this. no one is entitled to a seat and if someone feels they could better represent the area they should go for it.

I'm not a professional politics-knower, but as a voter I just do not find the procedural 4D chess arguments people make with respect to whether someone "should" primary an elected official at all persuasive

I like Kat, but why is she running against Jan Schakowsky? yeah, she's up there in years, but she makes frequent appearances in the district and has a very responsive office team.
1) lives in district
2) pays taxes
3) wasn't a Republican/donor minute & a half ago
4) hasn't been accused of multiple sexual assaults
5) regular voter
Problems? There are other fish in the sea.

I don't have the immune system to win but I could make them work for it. You've given me something to think about. Thank you! I'm in New Hampshire & yeah enough said. 🤕
I have a hard time w/ the bystander effect, my very REAL limitations, the VERY real need for someone in NH to not just totally suck bc as y'all saw our 2 lady dems fucked up on 3/14
well'p
those just aren't reasons anymore.
But it isn't just about the status quo. The fact that the too-online left bandies it around like a major threat (and laments when the squishy center does it to them) is also a big part of the problem.
Stop treating it like a big deal!
I'm not a politician, just an annoyed and engaged constituent who's tired of being told that we need to avoid rocking the boat.

Republicans do. If we're gonna primary seated politicians, for the love of God, VOTE IN THE DAMN PRIMARIES, PEOPLE
One of the Democratic Party’s biggest problems is precisely that far too few of its members have needed to practice basic political skills like being witty and playing to a crowd (or playing against a hostile crowd). Some of them haven’t faced real opposition in decades.
What about that not being nearly as persuasive to voters as having a platform and vision that resonates with them instead of promising nothing AND doing nothing?
AOC unseated a popular incumbent by campaigning in the district and talking directly to residents. Not by having rallies and viral internet posts.
The primary opponents should fit the district though and it should not be moderate vs lefty but about who understands the threat and will act accordingly.
And, everyone should have to run against someone else to fill a ballot. There should always be a competition of the best people, best ideas.
But that's a question for potential donors and volunteers, NOT really for potential candidates.
OCCUPY WASHINGTON... BY THE MILLIONS. DON'T LET AF1 LEAVE THE GROUND... FORCE THESE PEOPLE TO RESIGN! HAVE THE FIVE ROGUE AND BOUGHT 5 MAGA SUPREME COURT JUDGES RESIGN!!!
EVERY MAGA, AND MAGACRAT CONGRESSMAN AND SENATOR NEEDS TO VACATE NOW!!!!
Arguing that an elected official is entitled to their seat without even an election is anti-democracy. Bad people are anti-democracy.
Presumably a carpetbagger is easily defeated by a local.
There should be no issue finding one of those except the Illinois Democratic Party would destroy any such local person, which is, I suspect, why someone from out of state is doing it.
Puh-leeze. My god you’re starting to make me be more interested in this person, not less.
It certainly was an argument against the original carpetbaggers that it was immoral for them to do so but I think you don’t want to be in company with those original antis.
Again, it should be trivial to bat away a challenge like that. If it isn’t, that’s democracy.
Anyone know when they're gonna bring more shrimp out?
Just spitballing here
i'm in a "primary literally all of these fuckers" mood but would hear arguments for seats that are close races and the incumbent has a record of winning. but still defaulting to always be primarying
This is not about ideology, it's about going on offense. Jan S. may be terrific, but does she go on offense?
It was a bad argument then, an absurd one when democracy is being dismantled around us.
No one is owed power - not those who have it and not those who would like to obtain it. Nancy Pelosi said that herself!
It would be SO much healthier for democracy if we had a lot more primarying of terrible legislators -- both D's AND R's
Into the requirements of our elected representatives
They work for us & it is not a voters job to support anyone elected that violates the Public Service oath
If the county voters don’t like something then the GOP Representative should just vote NO
She just moved to Chicago.
Katherine Abughazaleh is a nepo baby. Grew up in Dallas. Grandfather, real estate magnate.
What exactly are her qualifications?
5 reps can own the House. DO it!
I think a prime example of how overblown the worry about online 'clout' is Will Stancil. Lots of juice online, but by his own analysis of his campaign the clout really didnt grant him a lot of extra sway.
I disagreed, gave you an example of a candidate with lots of clout ,who still lost.
Because that's not how politics work.
I agree with you.

That easily meets the definition of "hijacking."
IMHO that isn't hijacking, it's "winning a primary."
The 50 state strategy is the best thing for democracy.
...but that might be seen as "rude", or "aggressive" or violate some unspoken norm / tradition.
1) incumbent is good;
2) district is 50/50; and
3) actual strong argument that highly contested primary burns through both sets of resources.
And, even then, challengers have a right to challenge so I’d be skeptical of arguments to the contrary
It’s like the whole point of this shit
Primaries should be competitive, but they don't have to be as high-stakes or as divisive as general elections are.
