Iirc the UK has something like 65 forces, including special ones like the one that protects nuclear stuff. Allegheny County, PA has ~90 municipalities (unusually high), some of which have their own forces, some are too small and share with their neighbors, plus various county level forces.

As a sample, I’m in a county with with a large countywide police force, with roughly 4K officers. Some villages have a supplemental village PD to basically serve as very expensive security guards for their villages. A few villages want their own PD fearing crime while other balk at the high cost.

County Sheriff has been illegally deputizing people who we won't release the names of, referring to them as an "insurgent force". No one else here seems to think this is unusual or alarming in the slightest.

Right like Chicago police are terrible but also the city is big enough that there are whole law firms whose sole business is doing police brutality cases and we actually have a newspaper with staff whose whole job it is to report on the police

Yes, this. In bigger cities, you have much more accountability via a real internal affairs division, law firms, and real newspapers with real journalists. State officials more motivated to carve out corruption. The federal government more responsive to claims, too.

I dealt with crooked cops, court officials- including judges, politicians and attorneys who were all part of ‘the deal’. Small town, big city, everywhere I went or lived. None of this is surprising, or unexpected.

Now, the entire nation is operating under this ‘system’.
