The real lesson here is that they never believed the economy was that bad in the first place. They're just picking up new messaging and running with it like good Nazis.
Would be interesting to identify the covariates of the segment reporting a change; are they associated with a geography, a class, a media diet, or is it broad? I wonder if you can tease out whether this group is facetious, or genuine (even if genuinely delusional)
For some of them, yes. For others, no, it's looking at where the economy actually is (something the Biden Administration did a terrible job of messaging about), and looking at what Trump says he'll do to us now that he's won.
No amount of messaging was going to help when the MSM and all the right wing aligned social media and podcast kept yelling inflation. This is a lost cause. This is on my fellow Americans who have lost the ability to think critically. Everything is based on feelings. We’re doomed.
Cool, I get to hang my flag upside down now and tell people that he isn't my president. Also that the country is gone and I hope the best for our children.
So arrogant of Democrats to point to data and statistics when PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING. Why won’t Democrats even listen to the desperate cries for help from the heartland and address economic anxiety? Truly, it is the Democrats who are responsible for Trump.
Listen u know the day he takes office they are all gonna claim that "it's the greatest economy the world has ever seen" again cause ppl are stupid & don't understand how government works
I would like to know what the right wing media machine has been saying for the last two weeks. Are these respondents just parroting what they were told?
Not the price of eggs or gas or bacon. Not the economy in any way, shape, or form. It was their revulsion at the possibility of a Black woman being in the White House.
The failure was the mainstream media inculcating this narrative instead of exposing the shell game that was really occurring - power, racism, misogyny. The press is now wanna be celebrities. Along with their billionaire CEOs, exist to serve their own interests. See Joe & Mika as latest turncoats.
If I’m reading that chart correctly, it looks to me like there’s about an equal shift of Democrats now saying they are worse off. Seems to me both parties have people responding based on their future expectations.
What won the election was the meta-story Murdoch & Co. have been pumping for 30 years:
"Brown people want to take what God gave to you."
Black lady cop? Hell no. We prefer white cops.
I was a publicist for good causes for the last 30 years. I saw it all go down. Even organized the first protest against Rush Limbaugh. YAR! Youth Against Racism
Of course -- and like the lemmings they are, they'll claim their bloated dear leader is responsible for the amazing economy starting next year. Totally predictable, boring and intellectually bankrupt.
very few public surveys control for partisan political affiliation but this is one of them; notice how economic sentiment in mid 2022 - when things were supposedly historically awful bc of oil and other prices rising - that sentiment is virtually unchanged compared to 2024
It wouldn’t matter. Vance stood in front of an egg case bitching that eggs are $5 per dozen when the actual prices were clearly posted behind him. People chose to believe his lies instead of their own eye. 😤
I mean, being the good guys does mean holding yourself to a higher standard.. but what does being and doing right matter if you continually lose? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Don't forget that Clinton said that as the Democratic Party was reinventing itself. It's when neoliberalism took hold of the party. It wasn't a message to the voters.
It was telegraphing that they had learned their lesson, and that the party could and would cater to big business as well, regardless of what they were campaigning on to the masses!
Racism and misogyny rocks on in the good old USA. What a disgrace. And yet I do critique Harris campaign for not embracing the economic successes of these last 4 years. They should bought 30 minutes of streaming Harris to show, in plain english, where we were then and are now. Opportunity lost.
For many respondents, survey response is public performance, even an effort to persuade. Surely becoming more common, but a moving target is hard to study.
What do you want to bet, the stock market will be lower on 1/20 than on election day, and the GOP will say we have the best economy. The GOP sell shit, and their followers eat it. Its a constant cycle.
What I never grokked was Trump saying everyone was better off four years ago. Really? Height of pandemic, hoarding TP, Zooming Thanksgiving. Did nobody point that out?
I’m done. They obviously fucked around and now we all get to find out. Yay. Thanks for lying to everyone because you have some kind of grievance that you can’t resolve on your own.
It appears this chart swings quite wildly, quite commonly. Which in itself is insane and possibly demonstrative that people don’t know what they’re talking about.
America will not be great again until 30 days or less, past the inauguration suddenly lo and behold, the economy will be humming, immigration will be down. America, just like that, will be "Great Again", you know why? because the Orange Turd Blossom said so. And the MAGA idiots will believe him.
I hate to laugh… it’s a dire situation. But I swear, every time I see some new horrible graphic. I laugh. I didn’t even make it to the graph b4 the guffaw… HAHAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I think I might look into having chickens...
I also suggest people start planning their gardens for the 2025 growing season *NOW*.
Not joking...if you have any space you can probably at least grow patio/cherry tomatoes & herbs & peppers (hot ones especially are easy to grow) in containers/pots.
I had chickens for several years. Be prepared for too many eggs (about 6 months from chicks to laying hens) and a huge mess+ flies.
I've already planned out my garden, it'll be much bigger next year than previous years.
OH, they'll be $6 eggs. Costs aren't coming down. Corporate overlords inflated price rises to appease investors, they cant just roll them back. Tarriffs will spawn 'shock' inflation which will justify costs going even higher.
The four Tea Party groups were all founded between Obama being elected and him taking office. They literally overnight went from thinking (republican) taxes were fine to (democratic) taxes were onerously high.
Isn't that interesting since the corporate media is not drumming on saying how bad it is every day.
Corporate media feeds people what they want you to think, (what benefits them) not what is accurate & factual.
I've seen this chart before.
Would be interesting to overlay some actual economic metrics on it, such as the S&P 500, unemployment figures, etc. Just to highlight how the subjective opinion of the economy does not correspond with actual economic data.

They just don't understand Trump doesn't give a shit about them.
And every day, I am soul crushed at being proven wrong again, some more, consistently, repeatedly. 😔💔
"How are the vibes in the country compared to last year?"
Try to talk me out of it.
"Brown people want to take what God gave to you."
Black lady cop? Hell no. We prefer white cops.
For many people, it no longer explains voting decisions. It *reflects* voting decisions.
shows that all of the punditry about how inflation impacts everyone blah blah blah is bullshit and unemployment is obviously the most important thing

perception
so a lesson learned is how to use perception to our advantage
republicans operate like the only facts that matter are the ones they say matter, so we should do the same
is that really a lie??
so do we wanna win or do we just wanna be right or both? we can do both
That's why all those polls failed miserably.

"The pandemic has broken a closely followed survey of sentiment"

Can you show me where you got this info?
I want to see what unaffiliated voters think.
Fun stuff.

I would buy a Tesler in a heartbeat.
These people tell the pollsters what they were told to tell.

We all know what the Republican line below is going to do over the next three months.
