I finally knit Mike’s hat which I’ve wanted since I was 5 years old. I can tell when people I pass on the street are Monkees fans because they light up when they see it.
It actually was! Dwight Yoakam is a huge Monkees fan and he interviewed Nesmith on his Bakersfield show before he passed away. Mike said he wore the hat to the audition bc he rode his motorcycle there. 1/
When he got called back for the second read, he drove and didn't have it on, and they asked him "where's your hat?" Turns out they liked the look so they had made it a permanent fixture
A friend let me have his Criterion BBS productions box set with stuff like Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, the Last Picture Show, etc and I ended up just watching HEAD over and over again. It rules.
No sir! I ran into Mickey Dolenz randomly at a charity event way back in 1999 and turned into a gibbering idiot because I was a huge fan. He was very polite, but I could see the “dear God, rescue me from this lady” look in his eyes as I showered him with compliments.
Oh, man, whenever I'm reminded of this song, I remember the great Elayne Boozler joke about it! She rewrote some of the lyrics to highlight their absurdity:
🎶
"Don't brush your teeth with Chlorox,
Don't shave with a Ginsu knife...."
I will sleep w/ whomever I choose to, whenever I choose - but obviously would prefer to sleep on the one w/ purple panda eyes, purple Fu Manchu/beatnik-y beard and long, thin nasal 'stache.
For the life of me, I can't figure out how many people that grew up on The Monkees and other late'60s/early '70s shows and music turned so conservative.
Huge fan of "Goin Down," which they wrote on their own:
"Floatin' down the river with a saturated liver
And I wish I could forgive her, but I do believe she meant it
When she told me to forget it, and I bet she will regret it
When they find me in the morning wet and drowned"
Had the good fortune at age five of my parents handing down the Monkees' "Steppin' Stone" and Sam the Sham's "Little Red Riding Hood" 45s as "kid stuff" for playing on the Fisher Price turntable alongside the Star Wars story records. Still chasing that thrill to this day.
So many good songs, and the show was great, too! Saw them in concert once, as well. Peter was, far and away, the most versatile and talented of the group. He played every instrument on that stage.
Honestly I feel lucky to have been a Monkees fan growing up as they exposed me to so many great songwriters from the 60’s that wrote most of their songs.
When I was a kid I watching the Monkees and my dad was like "they aren't a real band, some TV producer just hired a bunch of kids to act like the Beatles on a sitcom" and I was kind of crushed :(
I guess there's no big reason I should know the Sex Pistols were connected to Vivienne Westwood but that's something I didn't even think to learn before. Thank you.
The absolute best. Goffin and King and Neil Diamond as contributing song writers, Neil Young, Stephen Stills, etc on tracks, Dolenz early Moog adopter, Nez as one of the pioneers of country rock, everything about HEAD, etc etc. Incredible, incredible stuff.
Saw Micky Dolenz a few years back. He was doing a 50th anniversary of the White Album tour. He did Why don’t we do it in the road and he can still wail
My silly punk cover band does a cover of Daydream Believer at about 190bpm- in the forbidden beat style of NOFX. You wanna see confused looks on fans.. this one does it 😝🤘
Unfortunately no. We suck, lol. This is just a goofy fun project for us (we are all in other bands), we dont have a lot online. But.. we did put up a Christmas song cover a few years ago on YT. Band stopped 2020-2024, we just started doing it again with new guitar and vox.
I wish I had it available. This is just a goofy fun project for us, we dont have a lot online. Band stopped 2020-2024, we just started doing it again with new guitar and vox. We did put up a Christmas tune a few years back on YT.

How much more credit could you ask for???
I saw you guys sometime around 1999 at a now defunct cultural festival my city used to host. Good times.
Their music is in regular rotation on my playlists to this day.

There's at least 20 Monkees songs that are complete gold.
"Floatin' down the river with a saturated liver
And I wish I could forgive her, but I do believe she meant it
When she told me to forget it, and I bet she will regret it
When they find me in the morning wet and drowned"
