It quite literally is, america loves to pretend its some glorious revolutionary republic, then the doj puts out a memo saying the president is a king actually https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_immunity
Since when is being the author of a blog mean you're a vetted authority on anything? What a despicable article this is. Al Gore should have hired better people.
He is a *con man*. Every single time the evidence against Trump was presented to a jury of his peers they have found him guilty and liable. That’s why he always tries to settle before going to trial. And that’s why he was desperate to delay all legal proceedings against him until after the election.
In 19 years of Montessori elementary school teaching, I took on a kind of boosterism for our civic heritage, saying, “No one is above the law,” “We are a nation of laws,” and tripe about the “peaceful transfer of power.” TikTok now gives kids a truer picture than I gave them.
We are you able to get the data specialist material into the right hands (Harris)? I know how hard we (get out the vote workers worked) and many have a hard time accepting the other side didn’t pull something.
So I know that there are a whole host if actual reasons to hate the state if the world but honestly the thing where Donald Trump - a stupid, incurious, insecure, and pathetic man - is constantly being elevated to some godhood status by fucking assholes is just…so unbelievably frustrating.
He's a lucky schmuck who failed upwards in a system designed for privileged lucky schmucks to fail upwards.
Nothing more.
And our people are so blinded by selfishness and stupidity that they believed he was their savior from eggs being slightly higher than five smegging years ago.
"A central pillar of American democracy is that no man is above the law. But Mr. Trump isn’t an ordinary man."
Kind of remarkable to put these two sentences back to back and not acknowledge they're exact opposites. A real-life "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."
"A central pillar of American democracy is that no man is above the law." But hey, what would happen if we just yoinked that pillar out because a lot of people like this one guy?
Section 9: “No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States…” Section 9 1/2: “…except such designations of extraordinary status as are necessary to the execution of the Will of the People through the appointment of the President.”
#sad and Trump got off free basically. He shouldn't be above the law, he doesn't even pay his #rallies and gets away with it. Wish #Harris would fight for #recounts
Fcuk the @nytimes.com
They’re afraid of the 🍊💩🤡 & his crime syndicate coming after them.
Guess what - they’re coming after you any.
Unless you turn yourselves into the Reich State media.
I mean, he’s not ordinary in that he’s objectively much worse than the average person. He’s “no ordinary man” in the sense that Jeffrey Dahmer is “no ordinary man.” True, but not in the way their defenders imagine
The event that triggered him and motivated his run for the presidency was Obama’s humiliation of him at the White House Correspondents Dinner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHckZCxdRkA
This myth needs to die. He was going to run no matter what Obama did or didn’t do. He had attempted to run before and he was clearly forming something by getting himself involved with “birther” conspiracy nonsense and the Tea Party.
No. He's not. He's monumental—in his arrogance, stupidity, vice, immortality, record of dismal failures at everything he's ever tried (read "Lucky Loser" for a full account), greed, racism, misogyny. Nothing ordinary about him - except that we are all supposed to be equal before the law.
Also, if one is arguing that “the popular vote in a misinformation-driven election is the final ruling on treason,” then the fact that Trump didn’t win a majority of the vote is, technically, a guilty verdict.
If you’re creating a stupid set of rules then at least play by them!
I respectfully disagree. It’s akin desegregating pools in the deep south. Equality can be reached in one of two ways, let everybody in or kick everybody out. “Trump is no ordinary man” is unqualified, it opens floor for debate that he’s less than an ordinary man, which seems accurate.
If you prick him, does he not bleed? If you tickle him, does he not laugh? If you kick him really, really hard in the balls, does he not crumple in blinding pain?
I mean, if the NYT thinks we need to test him, I volunteer.
Right. But I sure would like to know why their priest-class, who has been pounding that drum for 65 years that I am personally familiar with, are too stupid to recognize it. These clowns are out there hyping 45 like they’ve got no freaking idea.
I truly don’t think they’re too stupid to realize it. I think they don’t actually believe what they peddle, they just use it for control because “christians” are super easy to manipulate.
They recognize it, they support it, they profit off it.
If we catch John Doe and he turns out to be the devil, I mean if he’s Satan himself, Then maybe he would live up to our expectations. But he’s not the devil. He’s just a man
If by some miracle the bullshit conflict of interest charge against Fani Willis goes away, she should absolutely try the bastard's ass, and show that the rule of law still exists somewhere in America. At the least, all his fascist minions should be tried for the charges they have been indicted for.
You mean it’s good to take money, power and prestige and run over little people? People are asking for their own imprisonment and slavery. This is beyond racism.
He’s really not. No ordinary man is as horrible as he is. He is one of the worst human beings who has ever lived, and quite possibly the most petty in human history.
Like I know this is getting less popular but I preferred when the not-yet-fulfilled goal was to be a nation dedicated to the proposition that all people are created equal.
You could easily argue that the entire basis of this country as a unique institution when it was founded was the concept that the President was, in the eyes of the law, an ordinary man.
Corollary rule: anyone who loses an election goes straight to prison. Hell, go full fucking Purge with it. If you're going to argue for this kind of mickey mouse lawless anarcho-monarchist bullshit why half ass it
I know everyone is tired of hearing it, and saying it, but can you just IMAGINE what these assholes would be saying if Obama had done even the barest fraction of what trump has done?
My guess is that Goldstein had already written "Why Biden Should Pardon Trump from Everything" assuming Harris would win, and he just repurposed that article here.
As a blakc man you should understand that the lock should be applied equally or not at all. They used lawfare against Trump. Upgraded misdemeanors to felonies. Change the statue to limitations just to go after him. Prosecuted him and not the well-intentioned old man. The people decided.
The Times, not even hiding it anymore. Legacy media’s complicity in our descent into authoritarianism cannot be understated, with the gray lady at the forefront
It is.
Oblivious to today’s world of disinformation, post-Fairness Doctrine.
"The charges were front and center in the campaign. The president-elect made a central feature of his candidacy that the cases were political and calculated to stop him from being elected again."
This is precisely why I, a 30-year+ subscriber to the NYT, no longer subscribe or read it. I guess I'll have to use https://removepaywall.com to see your stuff Jamelle. Appreciate you.
This is the garbage I’ve come to expect from the NYT. I’ve unsubscribed everything from them. They’ve lost all credibility with how much pro-Trump, anti-Biden, and political clickbait they’ve run.
Why is the media relentlessly trying to normalize this man? His behavior is unhinged, racist, deranged and criminal. But yet they still insist on convincing us that this all normal. #gaslighting101
This is some serious obeying in advance. The actions being prosecuted would be charged and prosecuted against any other American. Makes me worry about what drivel we may soon see from SCOTUSBlog which he edits.
Lawbrain is real. See also: this was a Chicago judge's response to a survey leading up to their retention election this year. Straight up "Because I was elected once, it is wrong of you to ever ask if I should be re-elected."
They should proceed with sentencing and let the farce proceed.
At some point the American people will have to wake up to the nightmare they have created.
If they don't the American experiment is done.
If you subscribe to NYT I would encourage you to consider taking 5 and write them a letter telling them they can have your money and condemn this shit on page one, or publish this shit without condemning it, but they can’t have both. Then tell them to nock this shit off and go do some journalism.
“Democracy’s ultimate verdict on these prosecutions was rendered by voters on Election Day”
That’s not how our justice system works. NYT are one of many prominent journalistic that played a role in sane washing Trump & after reading this I’ll be cancelling my subscription. What a joke.
Unfortunately, wishful thinking. Justice may be blind, but she seems to orgasm over the smell of money. SCOTUS crushed the illusion that no man is above the law.
I get infuriated when some people who should know better insist that a political decision about who to vote for is somehow dispositive of a legal question of whether criminal laws were broken or civil torts committed.
I also get infuriated by "but what if the shoe were on the other foot?" arguments: if there was a cogent and coherent argument that Biden broke laws, I'd welcome his prosecution (however novel the theory).
We all know the expression, "Success has a thousand fathers, but failure is an orphan." Well, this failure has MANY fathers, and the NY Times is just one of them.
I wouldn't even share the link tbh, I'd only post a screenshot. Screw giving any money or clicks to those fascist enabling traitors. They're half of the reason we're stuck in this mess now. I've never been so disgusted with the state of US news media.
100%. I will never pay a dime to any of these orgs again despite believing in journalism because accountability has just disappeared. Even "unbiased and neutral" sources like NPR were a massive disappointment with pretending Trump was anything other than a fascist criminal traitor this past decade.
One of the stupidest things I've ever seen come out of NY Times. The "verdict" they claim was rendered came without the bulk of the evidence ever reaching "the jury." The Times has hit bottom with this one.
This is disgusting. I canceled my Times subscription yesterday after subscribing for reading and subscribing for decades. This makes it clear I made the right decision.
Mr. Goldstein is the publisher of SCOTUSblog, which reports on the Supreme Court. He was a longtime Supreme Court litigator and a counsel to Vice President Al Gore in the 2000 election disputes.
The opinion section of NYT has been really bad for a while now. Of course I’m not talking about your columns, but ones by guest writers have just been unreadable for a long time.
That’s wrong on so many levels.
We don’t try people in the court of public opinion, and a 1% lead is some bullshit anyway.
Though I agree, Trump is no ordinary man. He’s far far lower than most.
"The Times consistently placed major stories about the Nazi treatment of European Jews on back pages… during the period September 1939 to May 1945 very few stories about Jewish victims made the Times front page."
No other country acts like this. The idea that a Prime Minister in Canada could be convicted of crimes and just ignore it is CRAZY. Your whole system is built on norms and best practices that don’t apply when your opponent lacks morals
This highlighted quote is incorrect. It’s because he broke the law and did everything possible to slow things down. Not “because we politically hate him.”
The author also imagines this totally unrealistic situation with Biden to justify this.
I don’t believe for one single second that the thing would stop the “Biden being unlawfully prosecuted” scenario is “lawful prosecutions of Trump stopping.”
Trump won it all.
His freedom,
a country all his own,
all the federal reserve money at his disposal, unquestioning minions, unyielding power,
and endless days of golf.
I expect Kim, Putin, and Xi will be visiting the White House next year. We ain’t seen nothing yet.
I will keep repeating this even though it's hindsight, but the Dems should have passed a resolution declaring him ineligible to run according to the 14th ammendment when they controlled Congress in 2011-22.
I think it is reasonable that felons can run for office.
While it is certainly not what has happened in Trump's case, if buying one corrupt judge was enough to knock out a candidate we'd have even less democracy than we do now.
IMO, the real problem was virtually the entire Republican-aligned political and media establishment lining up to support Trump. Even without the multiple serious criminal convictions, they should have known better. (But of course their career depends on them not knowing better.)
For me it’s not the felon thing, but the very specific insurrectionist/traitor to the nation aspect that’s never been fully grappled with. The fact that he refused to acknowledge the validity of our elections AND tried to overthrow the gov’t should have disqualified him.
I'm in favor of felons running for office... depending on the felony. Inciting what was essentially an attempted government coup should be disqualifying. Falsifying campaign related financials should be disqualifying. Basically any felony related to running for office.
Why should Americans have to obey any laws? Supreme Court justices accept bribes from individuals and corporations with business before the court. The president-elect is a convicted felon who regularly commits tax fraud and repeatedly violated the Constitution's Emoluments Clause while in office.
SCOTUSblog is embarrassing with how it ignores all reality so that they can maintain this imaginary vision of the Rule of Law in this country. NYT has published some awful pieces but this is up there.
Does getting elected to political office make someone immune from prosecution? I'm not sure the US constitution has something so fundamental as a right, ours certainly doesn't.
I have yet to be involved in criminal behavior but if I decide to be involved, I hereby declare myself to not be an ordinary woman. Potential case dismissed - phew!

I see this as a really bad sign.
I was tabling for my city council candidate outside a UC on Election Day, and the basic questions I got about city government were disheartening.
Most men aren't unbearable pieces of shit.
The real power is in the global Oligarchs who control tech, energy, finance, pharma, media, and agriculture.
They found the perfect grifter con man.

I find it funny that they don’t want the law to apply to them so in that case laws don’t protect them either and we can do anything to them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXKDtkCzSCw
My thoughts exactly.
If you’re creating a stupid set of rules then at least play by them!
Never a good idea
I mean, if the NYT thinks we need to test him, I volunteer.
Which is why John Roberts' elevation of Trump to King is so fucking un-American.
Thank you for your work Sir.

They recognize it, they support it, they profit off it.
a fucking freak & that comparison is an insult to the fabulously ordinary men I know
It’ll be a long time before I settle down and think “this is fine”.
Fuuuuuuuuuuck this
That's the whole point!
We are all ordinary!!!
(I mean in a monarchy, the King is not ordinary, but in a democracy, everybody is.)
And they aren't coming after me cause I am not a criminal. So I'm not worried.
(And yes, I'm calling it crap, sight unseen. "Democracy" doesn't get to weigh in on Trump's legal troubles)
All of the lawless presidents should have been prosecuted. If that means they'd all go to jail after their terms - good!!
It's fucking insane that none ever faced consequences for it. It's done real harm to the country.
Can someone tell me who wrote this crap?
Yes they are.
It's despicable, Jamelle. 😣
Rule of Law.

What a couple of sentences
(And also he was retained, 70/30)
No thanks.

Trump should be in jail!
It's only a matter of time before it all catches up to him.
There are only so many promises you can make!
Mr. Goldstein is the publisher of SCOTUSblog, which reports on the Supreme Court. He was a longtime Supreme Court litigator and a counsel to Vice President Al Gore in the 2000 election disputes.
Thankfully, NYT has you, Jamelle. That gives me some measure of comfort.
We don’t try people in the court of public opinion, and a 1% lead is some bullshit anyway.
Though I agree, Trump is no ordinary man. He’s far far lower than most.
Why is it always "let them off the hook"?
They hope to gain his salvation by dropping to their knees.
It’s pathetic.

Elections are more important and accurate than jury decisions? On what planet?
