these motherfuckers are making me stare at shipping charts
nobody outside the shipping industry should have to stare at shipping charts

Most of my onboarding involved learning about the shipping industry.
https://www.marinetraffic.com and https://www.vesselfinder.com cover the basics
https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/imports/china
Now, I'm trying to figure out who is going to throw the next molotov into the government.
I looked at MarineAIS, still a LOT of traffic out there. But hard to analyze without more time / detail / effort.

Makes your friggin' eyes bleed.
Unless POTUS Muskrat can really control photons 🙄 and beam all the supplies over TWO goddam fucking oceans!
Corpses of the starved MAGA can be ground up for feedstock. Fed back to the MAGA.
NET ZERO bitches 🖕🖕🖕
I think it's a little bit on the hawkish side, specially on matters of China, which sometimes blind them to a lot of stuff. However, it is soooooo informative!

Houthis, Trump's tariffs...
Amazon retail has very narrow profit margins. In fact, amazon retail margins are so low that without predatory business practices it wouldn't survive.
Most of amazon's revenue comes from AWS.
It might be preparing to abandon retail to stem the bleeding...

THIS week folks sat up and went "We appear to be in trouble."
We are long past trouble - you don't load a container ship and teleport it across an ocean and then transit the goods instantly.
Everyone else knows it too, we are fucked without lube
The instability due to covid was one thing, but you could see cause and effect, with Trump you can only see chaos and confusion
I read that the nicer TP comes from fibers from overseas but commercial grade's made in the US. You can plan the allotment of your storage space. Thanks for that idea.
I figure stock up on pet food and toilet paper. Maybe Tylenol.
Because by then they'll only be a legend in your country...
We’re all learning too much about things that used to just happen safely in the background.
Can confirm.
...we're so, so fucked, and I'm sorry. No one should have to face that!
Wired: When the Uber driver is talking about the Baltic Dry Index, we're fucked
My, that is concerning.
It's the unpredictability. Why put something on a boat or truck if halfway to a port of entry Trump has another stroke and changes everything again? Search was one minute before I post this.

And this is one of the rare cases where governments have all collectively chosen to be smart and use the phrase "chart one" as the one you should start with.
From there you can go anywhere you'd like
Done and done👍
But, according to CNBC, there was a 12% spike in March of China exports to the US, so, from the export number I posted above, April, so far, is disastrous.
Chinas' war plan was to develop a dependence on them for goods, and cut us off when a war starts.
tRump did it for them...
FWIW, it's three bucks on Amazon for the Kindle version today. Fun fact: in Vietnam, most manufactured goods move from factory to port in standard containers on river boats.
My question is, WHICH commodities will be disrupted? Obviously industrial equipment (valves, pipe, fittings), but what about toilet paper? Cat food? Or are those fine, but the PACKAGING is fucked?
Or the machines as soon as a part breaks.
I know a hardcore MAGA guy that I attended church with (while I still went) that I see occasionally in Kroger. He owns an industrial embroidery business. Praying that his supplies and consumable parts all come from China.
Airbus will be ecstatic.
if this goes on: at some point, the dollar bill
i hate this place
The administration, however, is turbo fucked. President Treats has taken all the Treats
and I don’t think he’s going to do that
There's no rerouting because the ports, trucks, warehouses and labor required to do this is MASSIVE.
He is very serious about changing the government's revenue structure from an income tax based to tariff based, like it was in the Gilded Age. A time he keeps wanting us to "go back" to, bc rich guys were very rich then, & he believes it's bc they didn't have to pay income tax. 🙄
lots of firms are just not viable with these tariffs and will have to be wound down and liquidated.
And the mobs will believe him. Or pretend to, which is functionally the same thing.
there’s no functional difference between 145% tariffs and “a gazillion percent” tariffs as far as Chinese goods are concerned, they just aren’t coming
Even if Trump decided to claim victory and reverse the Chinese tariffs today, stuff's already canceled & the ships on the way are already fewer, and will be for at least another month after any reversal.
"you cant buy these things anymore" is a potential case.
There was no shortage. There was tiny disruption in supply to one petrol station.
Within a couple of days diesel was unobtainable in a wave of panic buying.
It took weeks for supply chains to work themselves out.
In short, this is going to be far worse than just the consequences of a few items.
A fundamental problem of modern supply chains is they can just fall over with no real provocation.
“Some things are going to get more expensive. And things from China simply won’t be available.”

80% of items sold at Walmart come from China.
Walmart employees 1.6 million people in America. Watch for massive lay offs in the coming weeks.
China is actively CHOOSING to avoid the US market. There's no indication they would choose to reverse because why would they?

I don't look at the stock market, why am I looking at the stock market?
trump makes us all trade experts
can't we just go back to normality - I don't want to need to know things!
But if you really need it, is a strong reaction inevitable?
Tdap was no problem. Bonus: who remembers when their last tetanus shot was anyway?
