My buddy and I played with a drummer yesterday. Guy is of a similar age, is a grownup (unlike the last 40 yo alcoholic child), with very similar musical taste. And he's a good drummer!
Yep, planning to! Off the cuff we did rough versions of:
I don't care about you - Fear
Just what I needed - Cars
Driver 8 - REM
Turning Japanese - Vapours
Along with a handful of stuff we prepped. And he understands dynamics!
I am jealous! The best drummer I ever played with was *amazing* and added so much to the music... then he went QAnon crazy and refused to be in the same room with somebody who might conceivably be a Democrat, so, uh, that ended.
Ug. We had a great drummer/recording engineer and he died of Covid. The fun part is I upgraded my bass amp from a 40W Fender Rumble to a 500W one. Same size as the Peavy I had in the late 80s, but about 1/3rd the weight.
Keep seeking. Music is a great outlet but we have to work for it sometimes.
I just beat Factorio: Space Age
I got my airbrush working and am painting my minis like crazy.
Did well at a local Warhammer tournament.
I deleted a skeet that didn't come across like I wanted rather then doubling down.
Got a new bedroom set and cleaned up the mess immediately.
Hell yeah! I hope you can keep that momentum going in the coming months!
I worked for Audible for 15 years helping indie authors and narrators make and market audiobooks. If you ever want to chat about that kind of thing, HMU🤘🏼
I keep meaning to get cracking with Audible, but I don't use it myself. I can't pay attention to a story for more than a few minutes when it's audio only. So I seem to have a mental block about putting in the effort to set up Audible. Hopefully I'll get to it in the summer.
my 10 y/o is apparently a helper for the pre-k and kindergarten kids when it's time to leave school and he is also in a club where the kids are mapping out their life goals. he didn't tell us about either thing which means he volunteered for both on his own and I think that is rad as hell.
not to piggy back on @primordialplatypus.bsky.social , but i also got a promotion *and* a platypus tattoo so in the spirit of their win, figured I’d share it
I started a writing wall. Im not even going to describe it. But it’s good, and it might just work. It was something when I woke up this morning and remembered I was going to do my writing wall, I felt hope and joy about the future.
I did a lot of stains when I started woodworking and after a while just prefered seeing the wood itself (maybe a small part from the additional effort and risk of stain...) and would just finish with 4 coats of arm-r-seal. That's my own preference though
Got back in the gym today. After a year off, I only lost about 20-30% of my lift weights. I'll get that back this year. And I can still very much bench 235 no probs - which I was worried about.
My 4 year old learned to ride a bike without training wheels on Christmas and now we ride to her school together several times a week. And it’s the best.
My mother had a serious plumbing issue that I fixed for her after a plumber gave her a multiple thousand dollar estimate. And I even am pretty sure I did it correctly.
I had a new graphic novel published! MR. MUFFINS: DEFENDER OF THE STARS from @oni-press.bsky.social is about a boy and his dog saving the universe when he learns that his pet corgi is the cosmic Chosen One
Decided to become a drag queen the same year I turn 40. In two-ish months I've gone from "can kind of walk in heels" to "can dance better in heels than I ever could in regular shoes"
I taught my six year old how to use a drop step in basketball because he always tries to post up larger kids to keep them from stealing the ball, and last week he pulled it out in the middle of a game. Had parents telling me afterwards how impressed they were with that move and I was beaming.
That’s the next goal but that one sadly is quite a ways off until someone (who is not me) manages to finish processing a several thousand piece shell collection 🫠
I started applications for grad school, which I had been telling myself I wanted to do for the better part of 7 years now and I have a first date with some wildly out of my league on Friday.
a few years after I put out our little self-released EP, I'm going to be recording and putting out a longer record with my modern jazz group on a small label sometime this year
- job interview last week
- back at the gym per my physical therapist's advice; she's seemed genuinely shocked about how quickly i'm building strength after injury / despite pain
- got out of the house to see friends at the nightclub this past weekend
- my cat is a lovely little friend
more careful inspection and maintenance of electrical connections, essentially. in this case, electrolysis over a long period of time caused a connection to corrode and degrade internally. the car is 38 years old
- Making progress in the gym again after backing off for months of PT (sneaky hip and balance problems)
- Passed the 1/3 mark in the socially critical fantasy novel I'm writing - hope to get it to an agent by summer!
Still juggling work, school, and parent care, keeping everything up in the air. I really need to get back to the gym, though, because my gains are now gones.
My adult life is finally looking like what I dreamed of when I was a kid, and it makes me committed to fight all the harder to make sure other people have this chance.
Had a coworker do a Nazi goosestep and arm salute through my self checkout line for an edgy "joke". I told him quite angrily we were not cool anymore and I would kick his ass if I ever saw him do it again. He came up later and profusely apologized.
Taught former coworkers to make zines & just got a text that they are now distributing zines on sabotaging fascism. Helped a comrade with a mutual aid effort to order COVID/rsv/flu combo tests for distribution, committed to another colleague today to lay out a zine re: ICE resistance ✊🏽✊🏽
I had a 2.6 R before, so the acceleration isn’t as responsive, but it’s still peppy for a 4 cylinder. I like that the back hatch has a locking feature when I need to close it, and I like that I can remote start it from the app.
For me, the infotainment system is the biggest upgrade.
The one in my old car was starting to glitch, and apparently that is a common enough occurrence in the 2019 models that there is a class action lawsuit. Mine was no longer covered by warranty either, so it just made sense to trade in my car with 80,000 for one with a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty
Thanks for sharing.
We recently experienced a problem of car battery being drained on its own. It was a faulty DCM (which we don’t even use). Apparently there is an extended warranty that covers it, so it was replaced after I opened a case with Subaru of America.
So, that bought us some time. But I ultimately want to replace it before it’s too old. There’s still a bit of time. I am also keen to get a hybrid, if that becomes available. I heard Forester has it now.
Loving the replies to this.
There is so much good in the world that's worth celebrating, big or small. It's important to slow down and notice how far you've come 🫶🏻🫶🏽🫶🏿
I’m done with the application process and on the Eligible List for Fairfax County Fire Dept. and am moving smoothly through the application process for DC Fire.
Already have Valentine's Day gift finished and flowers ordered for delivery this last Saturday. @hollyanderson.bsky.social method for ordering flowers undefeated btw.
My 16yo, having raised the funds himself (selling old Lego kits) to buy parts, built a gaming computer this weekend.
When he hit a roadblock & was freaking out, I told him I was proud of him. After he solved the problem, he said he was proud of himself. Glad I planted that seed!
That's so awesome! Working with technology involves those kinds of roadblocks /constantly/ and the best engineers are the ones who don't get discouraged by them, but recognize them as just part of the process.
that's awesome - rewarding effort, especially with a complex task like building a computer, will have such a lasting effect. wish I had that growing up!
Started dating someone I really like recently and at this point I think it's officially going somewhere serious. Never had this feeling to start out in any of my past relationships
I went to the bouldering gym for the first time in a few weeks, and I managed to do a couple of moves that were outside my comfort zone (i.e., I expected I'd miss the hold & fall, but I made it). I even sent a V2, which for my current fitness level counts as a win.
I’m about 90% done with a new animated feature film I’ve made all by myself, on my laptop (the music too!). Should be done by end of May. Proud of the work I’ve done.

33 days no weed
6 weeks of a new, intense workout routine
2 days without chips or candy
💪🏼
Did you share a recent win? If so what was it?
I worked for Audible for 15 years helping indie authors and narrators make and market audiobooks. If you ever want to chat about that kind of thing, HMU🤘🏼
I'm learning a new skill

The year of Linux on the desktop could come at any time! 🤓😏
😇
Been trying to do that for a decade.

no satan is stealing our full fat joy today
seems like a good idea
Benched 225lbs the first time since high school.
It is a parody of a terrible Dean Koontz book (who is a hacky conservative writer of trashy airport fiction).
It’s short and hysterical

Excited to have a yard to grow stuff in.
(Even if I'm not as pleased as he is.)
Sometimes it's the small things

My husband and I make an incredible team. We supported each other in our exhaustion--taking turns relieving each other of parent duty--post trip!
I fall more in love with my husband, partner, best friend, every damned day!
In minor news, I recently found out I can wear two scarves at once for extra color combos
Now to just sort out this imposter syndrome.
