No, I don't need a bloody copilot for this document, thank you.
Writing is, in no small part, a tool for thinking. If you outsource that element to a machine that cannot think, you shouldn't be surprised if, at the end of the process, neither you nor your reader are any the wiser.

But writing is not merely the laborious process of recording your thoughts in a permanent form. It is a tool that generates insight and ideas, and we should be careful how we automate it.
One such tool is *freewriting* - sitting down with a pen and paper and just writing whatever's in your head; scraping your subconscious.
It's a good example of how writing can generate ideas.
Then copilot... 😒
Many, many people are advertising that they are underlicensed to Microsoft right now. It's unwise.
AI has it's place. For me it's technical, not editorial.
I'll control my car and I'll tell my computer what to do.
It all works poorly anyways.
Ask a failed writer! I know everything about failing, no charge! 🤗
One of the topics I teach in ALL my classes is the INTELLIGENT and ETHICAL use of AI in the IT industry. It helps so much when that message is repeated by varied sources. 🙂
I had a grammar check try to correct “won’t” to “wont.” Now, I like the word “wont”, it’s a deliberate stylistic choice, it has a specific meaning, and is almost archaic.
I’ve had autocorrect try to insert an apostrophe in the possessive “its”, in a sentence where “it is” would *also* be nonsensical.
❌ “Good day.” She said.
The checker opts for the second one every time. But that comma is so confusing! Let’s make it easier.
✔️ “Good day!” she said.
❌ “Good day!” She said.
Oh, FFS, stop. capitalising. the. dialogue. subject.
It’s easier to proof my own writing. That way I don’t have to correct the machine when it tries to correct me.
(I do understand that some people benefit greatly from spellcheckers!)
I did not know what Co-pilot actually was until a wee minute ago
There is always some sorta bollox trying to install itself on your computer these days
I was happy enough with Windows 8.11 and “Word” without all the fancy do-dahs & add ons
Writing, sure, keep that as a skill. But to downplay the tech risks falling behind.
If AI recommends Ive said "great" too much in a passage, that's good feedback. Whether subjective or not, I can ignore or take the feedback. Ideal world, we should look at how to work well with AI,not bin it.
But "the skill of the user makes the tool" feels apt, regardless.
We did a trial of it recently. First day, a banner pops up in Outlook, inviting me to let Copilot summarise an email, so I tried it. 1/4
AI intrusions into that process is an attempt to assume control of my thinking for me. No wonder they are so hungry to inject AI into everything.
Upon analysing the differences I realised what made it so bad; AI does not feel. The new version it presented to me had no emotion.
Emotion is what makes good illustration and writing.
It’s helped me find better solutions for spatial data analyses.
But it’s not worth the energy consumption.
I can't in good conscience use it based on it being plagiarism writ large, and such a waste of resources.
It's a terrible idea. For all its "virtues" - creating lists, business plans or whatever, those are all things humans could and should be doing: it's what builds community.
For *some — who leverage brain dumps (specifically audio) as part of their writing process, AI is a godsend.
The power is in the thematic organization, and pulling back the curtain on what you don’t want — so you can write in your own voice 🤘🏻
The end goal has become the product, the commodification of art has come full circle
We must never forget what real, human art feels like

It's tech writing, legal docs, contracts, employee reviews, meeting minutes, technical specifications, run books, standard operating procedures.
Give me AI to assist with all that
So bloody annoying. If I need to write a report, I will write the report.
Trained and educated for it. Don't need constant interruption about changing the layout
Enough!
or worse, downright stupid?

Using it for mindless tasks might be good.
1984 is indeed the goal, only darker.
It's good that information is more accessible. I'm not saying "going mainstream ruined computers and/or the internet." I still like the internet.
I am not a good writer and need the help.
I haven't even bothered to play around with it, and I urgently removed it from my PC when I learned about the security concerns a while back.
No, Msoft, go away. You're not helping.
- Settings
- Apps
- Installed apps
- Click on the three dots to the right of CoPilot bar
- Uninstall appears as one of the options 🙂
Cheers and hugs all around! 😍

It has become easy to react without the process of digested thought, or respond without commitment. In building an intentional community, I want to keep my skin in the game, and recognize others who speak and think for themselves
I want AI to handle the dull repetitive tasks involved in writing music and converting it to standard notation, to help with business related tasks, etc.
What I DON’T want is for AI yo write the music for me.
Or you could take the gist of the message, which many of us implicitly agree with, and think of how to rephrase it in your own words.
It also makes me miss Clippy.
Is it a browser setting or a system setting?

I have to assume that the normies pushing this are perhaps the sort who think things out by talking to other people rather than through writing, and they can't fathom why anyone would WANT or NEED to write.
Predictive text does nothing to help in that process
Also me: lers tru typinh wthuot ayticrect
Precisely.
Funny cause it’s true.
“I don’t know what I think until I see what I’ve written.”
I write it on the flyleaf of every journal/notebook I start.
“How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”
Also, not everybody has to be good at everything.
- You have to actually look through the camera: simply pointing it at an appealing scene isn't enough
- You have to actually read back, consider & edit the words you wrote: a stream of consciousness onto the page rarely works
But I found Chatbots are a great tool for thinking, actually: they're wonderful for bouncing ideas off of.
I also read that one can switch to "Microsoft 365 Basic" which doesn't have AI and it's a lot less expensive.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/p/microsoft-365-basic/cfq7ttc0ktxs
Unfortunately, the Basic package doesn't seem to support the Family license, which I'm using. 🤨
P.s. AI is 1940s has always been thinking, kek.
At least half my business is writing excerpts for ppl on problem chapters. It's more of a collaborative effort where I get paid a one off instead of being a co-author.
I can guarantee you that I, w/20yrs experience, know better than an AI.
Because writing IS exhausting (in a good way) from the amount of thought and intuition accepted or rejected and which of these 5 words that mean the same thing but different is best & that thing constantly there is distracting
That may not be exactly how. So double check.
