From today's Times. "Assassin’s Creed Shadows" let players run wild in shrines and temples and destroy them. They patched it out, but it was unforgivable to begin with. They wouldn't have disrespected a church or synagogue. Maybe they thought Japanese wouldn't notice or mind. We do. Very much.

But only because it's really funny how much it upsets them
I wonder which one it is.
This stupid ass fake outrage really gotta stop, dude. Don't care if it's against a game from Ubisoft or an actual decent group of devs, it makes NO sense and looks highly hypocritical.
"omg it's so terrible to destroy and pillage all of these temples and churches! If only I could bring myself to stop voluntarily doing it for hours on end. Oh well."
Fight the Pope.
With your hands
Inside the Vatican
The most holy place in the Catholic faith.
It’s less clear why shrines need to be destructible when your enemies are the shogun and not priests like in ac2.
It’s still a minor sacrilegious act, so I’m just wondering if there was any narrative reason to justify it.
And whose voice is worth hearing in that process?
Ubisoft patched it anyway, but it is a question worth considering as a community.
I think the gameplay mechanic should work for the story; not just because it’s possible
There is some value in the games, but does a father have any right to remove his dead daughter’s face from one of the people you can shoot?
Meanwhile in Japan
Catholicism, Christianity, WWI and Oda Nobuna
They've disrespected plenty of churches and mosques.
So chill with the holier-than-thou crocodile tears.
Went on a rampage in the Great Synagogue in Alexandria too in Origins. And even in the Vatican.
They feared people would copy it in real life, and well after Johnny Somali, can you blaim them ?
The relationship between Japanese religion and the shoguns were not nearly as entangled as the pope and kings were with Christianity; hence the question of why you need to kill Japanese priests.
You don't ; litteraly the story has almost nothing to do with the shinto nor buddhist .
But as any AC you can kill most NPC in the open world(and as always kill 3 civilians=> game over).
What are you talking about?
you fist fight the pope in the second game
what are you talking about?
You also get an achievement specifically for doing this.
Though I'd say the best way is to have consequences in-game for desecration
I don't think removing the chance of desecrating Shinto temples is right. The right move should be that the population shuns you for doing it.
I’m as anti capitalist as many, but I also don’t believe in the necessary sacredness of supposed holy sites.
There’s a difference between what’s happened with this game vs an actual production that’s done for bigoted reasons.
Get a grip dude. Assassins Creed has always demonstrated irreverence to religion. It's like you've never actually played the games or something.
They're always alone. That's the fundamental issue here. There is a relationship recession and these "powerful" accounts always add up to being resentful nerds who are ugly and can't date.
And as others said: yes they definitely disrespect churches.
Get a grip on reality.
Shut the fuck up before I make a video game about the killing the bastard emperor you pearl clutching little baby.
It’s also comically juvenile
Ezio takes on the entire Vatican
Valhalla has you pillaging Monasteries.
Also huge bugfest(as usual with today slop industry).
Like indie games made by two dudes in basement have more polish than multi billion company
Also to me it sounds like the people who were mad about a black character are just trying to ruin the game for everyone else out of spite.
And as everyone pointed out, what took you this long to be mad about destroying virtual churches?
Lol I ransacked so many churches in these games, fistfighted a pope to death in one of the holiest churches of catholic christendom, too.
What are you talking about. Did you have a stroke?
In Syndicate you throw a woman through the window of St Paul’s Cathedral.
2.) get a life
3.) I literally beat the shit out of the pope
Oda Nobunaga in Japanese media
Dude contains multitudes
Talk about an argument made in bad faith. Or from a place of ignorance. AND, Ubisoft even made it so you couldn't draw blood in a shrine anymore.
OK, but the series has actually done that quite a bit. In Assassin's Creed II you literally have a fist fight with a historical pope.
Age of Empires had us burning churches and temples down.
IIRC in one of the Hitman games you have a mission to kill a cardinal.
(also yes you fight and kill the pope)
Backlash can do serious damage
You are either being disingenuous or you are disturbed. Go outside please.
1) It's OK to be upset when fiction depicts desecration of religious grounds
2) It's unwise to assume a creator's intention
3) It's wise to do research before saying things like "they've never done things like this in their previous movies/shows/games/books"
However, in AC2 (or Brotherhood, I don't remember) you BEAT A POPE TO DEATH. And in AC: Valhalla you loot and burn down abbeys. Routinely!
Japan isn't special.
...
I am being summoned...
Shouldn’t be removing features. The flaw of the series has always been the lack of things to do (variety, not amount)
Templars are the story's main antagonists.
You punch the pope in AC2.
Get lost Troll !
Arguably as bad. Specially considering it's in the Vatican.
It's a series about how all religion is fake.
Pathetic rage baiting grifter spewing BS for clicks.
You can call Ubisoft's actions tactless, but they aren't singling out Japanese people here.
Also, not all players care about religions or think that the creators need to limit their creativity to align with other people's bias. If you don't like what happens in a game you can display your disagreement by not buying or recommending it.
I have played the games (as in the entire series) for under two hours and I know that.
They are not exactly kind to the Christian religion, many Christians refuse to play them.
