so I think their mistake was that they identified (correctly!) that algorithmic timelines are good for Not Very Online People, who are the majority of people online, but Very Online People prefer non-algo TLs and, crucially, they're the ones doing most of the posting, and they bring people with them

pretty amazing to see meta double down on algorithmic timeline for a year with threads, watch Bluesky grow very quickly, and then immediately make some changes to directly emulate Bluesky to cut that growth off
v curious if they squandered their head start

also: lol and lmao
(They'd still be wrong, but at least I could see some logic maybe)
They truly fumbled the bag given the direct conversion stream Instagram provided
Maybe the biggest driver of Bluesky is Twitter?
An algorithm would probably help
The Editor was an old fangled form of algorithm.
:)
But you could use the people who you see talking about it the most in a LIST, which you could ignore except for the night of/day after broadcast.
I follow the same people here that I do (or did if they've left) there.
Meta: What's a Post?
Good ALT always appreciated
Also kinda over the whole billionaire thing
so a lot of people like me, and I'm more of a terminally online sort, didn't join at all for that reason.
1) my friends
2) restaurants/food outlets I'm curious about
3) cooking shorts
4) food vlogs (yes there is a theme here, I regret nothing)
At NO POINT do I want the Ramen Guy's hot takes on senate confirmation hearings
(I got lucky, bought the tech from Google direct so got a full refund for the now useless controller...)
Also, Instagram started posting ads related to work stuff. Again… no.
Instagram is my one place of peace on social media. No work, no politics, nothing but fun stuff. I don’t want to mix that!
(Also a site where the algorithm is avoidable).
Das Posting
Also, here, have some curse words:

I don't want to see one of 5 hours ago above one of 50s ago.
How do we change this madness?
Arrrrrgggghhhh.
So "Following" sticks a 5 mins ago repost of a post of 5 days ago above a post of 5 mins ago.
Give me the option of sorting.
it's because they want to surface threads on ig
But there are a lot of people like me who don't like that who shun them, at best by not following back, but if they seem really annoying, blocking them.
Please don't follow back
*read bio and a few posts, just to feel safe, but you had me at badger...
Have some more badgers 🦡🦡
Crows love them, too
I wouldn't be tempted to join for random singers who post about 3.000 dollar haircuts, tell me why that 10.000 dollars/night AirBnB on an island only reachable by heli is the best destination ever and upload trivialities about some important cause for the PR.
secondly, I want to be on a platform where you are correct, because a successful "middle" gives an energy but also an umbrella for people to engage in the replies.
thirdly - BlueSky is still in expansion phase before monetisation
The changes that they deliberately made to hashtags (stopping recent and just showing popular) had made life harder for many smaller creatures - prioritising the biggest influencer accounts.
Either they want the same users, or they want to create something different. They can't have both.
But the Twitter blue ticks get first reply is the going to hurt it I think. So much drivel.
This wasn't some big secret. They intentionally prioritized a much more inauthentic form of engagement because they thought it was better for Meta. They are only hard pivoting because BlueSky is crushing them.
It reminds me a bit of Spotify; I think most people just want to listen to the songs / bands they already know and like, but will sprinkle in some algorithmic stuff now and then especially to potentially discover new stuff.
