Do you have questions about this "dire wolf" "de-extinction"? I am probably going to make a video tomorrow.
(Note: They are not dire wolves, and it is not a de-extinction)

When dumb stuff gets out as fact, people later can end up blaming science for being 'wrong.' Lazy journalists are what I'm getting at

1) Stupid article claiming dire wolf has been genetically resurrected
2) real researchers in the field and half the science community say nope
3)
2) Did you expect to see Jurassic Park type shit like this sooner than this?
3) What else are they working on that they haven't told us about yet???
Looking forward to learning more tomorrow.
Like, why? We aren’t even able to “study” the animal or its behavior though this, all we did is make a funny looking dog 🐩
The researchers are focusing on reproducing "traits" but that feels superficial and squishy. And unscientific.
I feel like there’s gonna be a third one coming. Cause we’ve got dire wolves and mammoths. We need something else to make it the “de-extinction” version of “Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!”
But if there’s a specific one, fantastic, let’s slide that right into the trio! I was definitely thinking something along the lines of a prehistoric bird. I was thinking something vaguely pre-Cassowary.
Plus, there’s already enough shrink inflation, nobody needs to be adding micro chicken fingers to the menus at fast food restaurants.
But damn if I‘m not curious now! Thanks for the info.
AND side note - "I'm a Huge Fan!!"
Legitimate room for discussion on that subject (including correct pronunciation) while encouraging engagement 👀
Now, whose resources were wasted? You must be an investor?

I had read they may be bulkier, be white furred, and have longer ears. They will find out when the pups grow up how much different they are from grey wolves.

Frankly I prefer the story about trying to recreate the passenger pigeon with something similar to fill it's role in the environment...

Thank you. This is a marketing ploy to sell very, very expensive customized "dogs" to some very wealthy people who don't know any better.
A genetically modified wolf is still a modern day wolf.
They say that we share 98% of our genome with chimps. So out of the 20-30k ish that is what 400 to 600 differences?
What's the delta with grey VS dire wolves?
If ~400ish genes are what makes a dire wolf from a grey wolf then we could say these are 3.5% dire wolves. Or 98%+.
Maybe Dire adjacent?
But feels like the important question from Jurassic Park - "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." - is relevant here.
I’d like an exploration of the ethics of trying to create new animals when we are unwilling to address the environmental conditions that cause extinction in the first place.
Nature can't tell us in words when its missing limbs, organs, etc. But the concept is the same.
Which species will do the most for the greater good--and support our ecosystems? I'm not sure we need "dire wolves" (perhaps we do) but if we are restoring extinct species, maybe analysis of ecosystems and a coordinated approach are best.
Whether they are actually 'dire wolves' or not is a moot point- Its a nice display for investors, and advanced their goals.
They have no intention of releasing them into the wild.
Can we focus on protecting what we have & saving our planet? FFS! 😡
I want to see their research supervisor!
for future reference
WE ARE NOT AN INTELLIGENT SPECIES!
Also, I’m assuming this is a profit making scheme?
I'm 6'3 and built like a gorilla, for context.
If scientists were bored, they could have used their brains to save wildlife whose
habitat is disappearing due to climate change.
This is like Musk playing in Space. 😡

and the purpose/need for a. is that coyotes interbred with red wolves in the past, and some of the red wolf genes they have are no longer present in red wolves after genetic bottlenecking.
In either event this is a transgenic modern wolf only
Them woolly mice are cuter.
*mic drop*
1. Habitat loss remains rampant
2. Mass extinctions in the anthropocene continue to accelerate
3. We have yet to demonstrate we can coexist with the remaining slice of biodiversity we have left?
2) How much weight is the IF carrying? How well can we edit traits in?
Is that really a good idea anyway?
Right?
Is that de-extinction?
Also, any company wanting to do this - the name "Gene Simians" is right there for the taking.
If they did it how this company did it with dire wolves they'd need a human surrogate. Would be hard enough to convince a woman to intentionally have a baby artificially mutated to look like a neanderthal, let alone the legal aspect.
Are they tameable? Like they look so cute.
> In tandem with genetically engineering its three dire wolves, Colossal has cloned two litters of red wolves, the most critically endangered wolf in the world, as part of its overall goal of pairing conservation efforts with its de-extinction efforts.
These are just pretty, large and have privatized government-adjacent ‘papers.’
Yet now they’re in decline everywhere, and so many species going extinct.
Some wolves developed “kindness gene” and became dogs - one of the most populous species.
Meanwhile kind and sociable dogs are the evolutionary winners.
Are they building a dire wolf park? I’m not sure that movie would do as well but I’d still probably watch it.
Hope this helps
seems like we have an anachronism.
Ummmm
How do the geneticists ensure a CRISPR-ed gene they replace gets expressed? And do scientists know how to emphasize traits if the cloned Franken-family’s phenotypes don’t live up to their dead relatives’ remains?
Thanks for considering my question!
What?
