"board game publishers always lie about their play times"
some of you motherfuckers take a full minute to move a single meeple

And then complain it takes forever to play.
It's wild to spotlight "board games" if one routinely miscalculates how long it takes to do *anything*
Many time jabs are by gamers who play a game once yet base their entire worldview around a single unreliable 1st impression
Despite these constant hard limits someone in my group is frustratingly bad at time management, always bringing games impossible to fit the time frame.
The problem is, the estimate on the box matters most for people who have never played it before and they'll be dealing with more friction, so I suggest doubling the estimate for the first play.
Play time on the box is probably less objective than one wishes it to be with unique context and wide error bars for designers, playtesters, and bg players.
I miss regular gaming, not that group.
On the other side of that coin though are publishers straight up lying about player counts.
They'll be playing one game for 8 straight days . . .
Axis & Allies would be a side game between turns for most of them 🤣
And depending on what kind of multitasking I'm doing, it's me. I'm peeple.
(and I am a VERY slow board-game player. Games with me are marathons)
We heard someone say that they need Prelude so that Terraforming Mars takes less than 3 hours to play?
And I have AP problems, but how???
I love Prelude a ton playing with those people, obviously.
They typically spend themselves as low as possible even when they have better higher-cost cards in hand to play.
I also have played the Steam version and played a lot solo (though not recently) so I'm more likely to crunch the numbers faster than they are.
Ahh, fun times in my childhood.
D:
🤷♀️
It's not a big factor for solo games you can leave on the table and return to later.
I get very impatient waiting for sluggish players.
Many games have lots of components and extensive set up required _before_ the game clock starts. Then there's the time to sort everything out and put it away.
And yes, AP can be a huge factor.
X Prep Time
Y Cook Time
Z Total Time
Play time
Rules Argument time
Not Paying Attention time
Hard decision time
Scoring time
Bitching About Scoring time
Putting Away time
Googling errata time
Browsing forums for edge case time
And when your friends have kids:
Starting the next movie time
Settling fight time
Getting kids to bed time
Dealing with 2-year-old who won’t stay in bed time
to be clear I think kids are great but you gotta account for them!
Rereading the Rules Two Hours Later and Realizing that I Missed the Bit that would have Let Me Win Time.
Gotta hit the restroom *again* time
There is a lot that goes into game time.
If I can't I try to involve them in set up to keep them intereted as well as getting them to touch and feel the components. Here you shuffle this, can you stack these, sort these by number, etc.
Me and my group couldnt finish the game in 2 hours
It's an AP prone game, but holy fuck.
"For players who know the rules and can help set up the game together, the time between taking the first move and tabulating final scores is an average of XX minutes per player."
"From the moment we agree to open the box for the first time ever to the moment we put it on the shelf, XX minutes per player will have elapsed."
Subsequent plays? 20 minutes including basic teach for new players.
Like dude, just play, we gaming either way fam.

I can't imagine four hours.
I don't mind it too much (spending time with the game/people is rewarding), but I wish we could play faster to play more.
It's lovely, by the way, but of course you know that. I will have to grab a copy when my finances improve.
I'd put it on a to-do list and, ya know, *do* it, but I have so many lists at this point that this will honestly be easier to track.
That's a sad commentary on my executive dysfunction, but oh well.
this is just a funny lil shitpost I did, but I do rankle a little bit at the common assumption that game publishers are trying to trick people
I don't really think deception is the goal. I'm not really sure why so many are shorter than the mean, but I'm sure it's largely innocent.
You're dead on about the people taking a minute to move a meeple though.
It's a pretty hopeless task huh?

same for boardgames
It took longer to set up then the box say it takes to play
Will probably need help at some point.
https://youtu.be/4yd7tJBd8UU
They said the game felt too long, ignoring the fact they they took like 5-8 minutes staring at the puzzle in the middle of the board every turn
Same goes with what game boxes say... I know with me and those I play with to triple it because we socialize too. 💜
When people ask me how long, I look at the box and do the math. :)
Boardgames -for me- help manage my PTSD symptoms as well as give me a temporary problem to solve that if I fail, it's okay.
You can play games how you want to.
As a disabled person the whole idea of playing fast or "efficiently" just doesn't work for me and just doesn't sound fun. X.x;
I like the fun.
