whoever decided that “righty tighty, leftie loosie” was going to be the universial standard was cooking. i’m very glad we got that sorted out that potential dilemma ages ago

Let me introduce to the world of security bolts! Not only do they twist the “wrong way” they also require some ridiculous 100$ bit set only available online and 2 weeks away -_-
Those are both perfectly reasonable exceptions, in the "not wanting sharp pointy things unscrewing themselves and spinning off in random directions" sense. I still don't understand propane tanks.
an easier way for me to remember it is, you just do a 👍 with your right hand and point your thumb where you want the screw or nut to go, then the rest of the fingers show which way to turn it (they're called "right-handed" screw threads for this reason)
I prefer the right-hand rule. Curl the fingers of your right hand the direction you're turning the screw, and your thumb will point the direction the screw will move. Or, point your thumb in the direction you want the screw to move, and your fingers will curl the direction you should turn it.
it’s great unless you happen to own a trailer made from a 1950s dodge pickup & your mechanic isn’t familiar with reverse threads on the left side lug nuts of old mopar & they fuck that shit up so bad screwing them the wrong way w the pneumatic wrench they have to pay you for new vintage rims lol
In Spanish, it's 'the right oppresses; the left liberates'. Which only works if your understanding of politics is correct, but, hey, I'm all for oppressors suffering a bevy of minor inconveniences like not remembering which way to turn screws.
I use the right-hand rule. Hold your thumb out and curl your fingers. If you want it to go in the direction your thumb points, turn it the way your fingers are pointing.
If it's got the devil's threads, use your left hand instead.
From the ‘top of clock’ perspective… though I’m glad I never heard the ‘righty righty…’ phrase until I was an adult. My process was knowing that a water faucet worked by screwing the gate in, and clockwise was forward time - the end of my shower.
Standing up for the oppressed LHS motorcycle mirrors of the world !
The single minded obsession with right hand threads impacts some of the most vulnerable components in society.
Denied, you just made the machinist use both left and right hand taps on a single piece for no reason. Use a shoulder bolt and loctite if you are concerned with the pedal falling off.
i want to own a lathe so i can make a screw whose thread pitch goes from left handed 20tpi down to 0 tpi then changes direction to become right handed and goes back up to 20tpi for litterally no reason other than it'd be a Funny Object
why use a gearbox to drive the table accuratley when a computer and a salvaged cnc gantry motor could do a worse job slower and break in the process :D
I always liked the right hand rule just a bit better, also used for torque in physics. You make a thumbs up and the way your fingers curl to make the closed fist is the way the screw rotates and the thumb is the direction it moves.
But, it’s only clockwise when you were looking at the head of the screw/bolt. It’s counterclockwise when it is facing away from you, and there isn’t even a clock analogy for when you’re looking at it sidelong.
“Away from you” or “towards you“ put you back in the situation of asking “top or bottom?”
Fair, but in my mind since I'm turning the bolt - it's a bit easier for me to keep track. Like I know I'm turning a bolt clockwise regardless of which angle the bolt is anchored at.
No, the point the person above is making is that turning right from the bottom of a circle and turning right from the top of a circle are opposite directions. Turning clockwise is the same direction from every point on a circle. I’m just sharing a shorter version of their rhyme :)
It always confuses me because clockwise travels r - l and anti-clockwise travels l - r.
It actually drives my ND brain nuts the "right tightly" bollocks
dunno if it’s apocryphal but I’ve heard british spies snuck microfiche past Germans by hiding them in reverse threaded buttons knowing they would never try to unscrew clockwise
Even when I'm tightening down upside down/backwards bolts I twist my hand one way and feel my ratchet click out of place to make sure before I snake my arm into the real deal and do everything backwards.
I may have trust issues and paranoia about plenty of other stuff.. but that mantra has my back.
Screwdriver on a separate subscription model, also an AI powered ratchet screwdriver that picks a random direction to ratchet in every time you apply pressure (5 second cool down)
In order to pair the screwdriver to the screw they both need to be on WiFi.
The screwdriver is capable of changing its head to exactly the right size/shape. It's a marvel of engineering and costs $7000 dollars to make. It requires monthly servicing.
Alternatively, there is a line of screws that will automatically change it's recess to exactly the right shape for the screwdriver
If you try using the auto sizing screwdriver on the auto sizing screws, your account will automatically be charged 74.99 unless you have the premium subscription
I agree, came in handy building a trundle bed! Pulled it from thin air from my childhood in the 70’s. Amazing given I cannot even remember what I went into the kitchen for, before I even get there.
Thank British engineer Joseph Whitworth (1803-1887), who standardised screw threads in 1841.
Also inventor of the Whitworth rifle, an incredibly precisely manufactured rifle with an octagonal rifled barrel that probably qualifies as the first sniper rifle.
At one stage of my training in the Navy I was overthinking which direction I was supposed to turn the handwheel to a valve and MM1 said, "Do you have to think about it to turn the water on in the shower?" Revalatory connection of shit in my head.
I always run into a problem with this: is it the top or the bottom that it is referring to.
Of course when I’m just sitting here I know it’s the top, but in the spur of the moment I often can’t remember and just pick at random because the only thing in my head is a direction not a rotation.
It's all good and great until you are underneath a car and you mentally break and forget if it's your left or the car's left or you're right or the car is right
This is a regulation enforce by the Federal Threading Association, which just lost their funding until they have to remove "lefty" from all documentation
the mnemonic is great, but lmao like i don't get how it can be that it's always true. like all screws must be made to be spiralling the same way, for that to happen. what if i went rogue and made some bastard screws that went the other way (???)

Had their way there’d be several flavors of screws with no real simplification.
Red sky at morning, sailors take warning
One twist, unwind them
One twist to bring them taught
& in the workshop, bind them
[apologies, Professor]
😆😎

El ascensor congela el derecho aprieta.
Is that how you say it?
This is so much better
Plus, I deal with that nonsense every day 🤣

👍
I prefer "rotate clockwise to go forward, counter-clockwise to move backwards." You're moving the bolt through time.
Easier for me to think about the circular motion of a clock, and how it relates to the bolt itself.
“Away from you” or “towards you“ put you back in the situation of asking “top or bottom?”
If you were to have a transparent clock and look at the rear side of it, it would look like the hand is moving counter clockwise.
Point your thumb in the direction you want the object to move. Whichever direction your fingers point is the direction you should spin it
It actually drives my ND brain nuts the "right tightly" bollocks
But maybe not!! Who knows. Long time ago. Maybe they decided to call it that first. Chicken before the egg thing…
I may have trust issues and paranoia about plenty of other stuff.. but that mantra has my back.

Widdershins put it in the bins.
Does this help? No one forces you to use a specific mnemonic.
Because why not make things difficult?
long live JIS which fits into almost all of the others without destroying them!
the right wants to screw you!
the left just wants to unwind...

i’m honestly surprised we managed to standardize.
“The right to swing your arm ends where the other person’s nose begins.”
