something i think about often is my first job was at a pizza place. at the end of the night we’d pop the leftover pizzas we had in the temp fridge in the oven and take them to our homes for dinner. after awhile the owner MADE us throw them in the trash, no pizza “for free”. just pure waste now
Comments
The manager was embezzling thousands but nobody got a $0.50 cheeseburger for free.
id pay people to mob the place and pull pizzas straight out the oven
the owner would apologize or go bankrupt
To supplement their $2.50/hr
That company is still in business. Wild how giving away a few $$$ of product didn't make them go under.
We would instead meet him at the dumpster and take them to sell them all.
The (VERY low paid) workers could take home leftover food at the end of the night.
Then they decided employees would “hide” food so they could have it.
The message from management: we think you’re thieves & not worth paying a decent wage.
They'd rather for things to go to waste than to let anything be given out for free.
Except for one place I worked in where before closing we would have massive sale on things which could go bad, and what didn't sell would-
I literally do not understand it, on a visceral level
Have done plenty of PC / laptop / tech refreshes where we were told to help ourselves for family and friends. If it was seen on eBay we’d be fired however..
Saved them paying the recycling cost..
also if I walk in and you expect your min wage cash register employee to upsell me on ANYTHING I would love to send you a wax-sealed invitation to gargle my fucking balls just stop it
Zero incentive for anyone outside of a manager to worry about up selling, not like I get a bonus. I'd rather they take the extra bucks or two and toss us a tip
Genuinely depraved behavior. Managers aren’t people.
There are groups called food rescues that will make it easy for the business to set their left overs aside to be picked up by volunteers.
Have food > put food in card > bring food to people with no food.
It's really not that hard. You just don't care about homeless people and see them as a pest problem.
Capitalism truly is a cancer.
No take homes, but you can eat as much product as you want.
Employees grew sick of cookies, and stopped eating them.
So the same principle, but a pie a staff. Less waste at least
I'm not saying it's the right choice, but a better one.
The big problem here is still capitalism, but for slightly different reasons
It wasnt goooood sushi, but it was fine.
My favorite shift leader was a young woman named Eddie.
We had to inventory all the wasted food, burger patties had a 10 minute life and then went in the walk in.
We worked in a shitty part of town.
Eddie put the "waste" food in a clean box next to the dumpster.
Also, this is a widespread problem. https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2021/02/portland-police-guard-dumpster-face-off-with-residents-trying-to-get-discarded-food-from-fred-meyer.html
I desperately have been trying to find ANY community support.
Please if you can help in anyway, even a share, my chance of survival increases ❤️🩹it cost nothing to invest in the survival of a 🏳️🌈 immigrant
Some people are just wired to hate.
But yeah that's horrible. But also, under capitalism, it "feels" like it's rational even though it is thoroughly irrational.
if you, as a business owner, can't handle estimating prep rates?
your business should fucking fail and make room on the market for someone who isn't a goddam fucking moron
did you really rely on your shift manager to estimate prep work?? are you fucking stupid???
It was kinda nice. The place was disgusting. I think it was a tax front or something because it had clearly been a franchise place at one point, but somehow kept all the same menus & recipes but wasn't a franchise
It cost no one a penny and there was never a problem
I used to work fast food and the old nuggets/fries were sometimes up for grabs provided management didn't make us serve that old shit to customers.
Management banned it when some people got caught making extra just so they could "waste" it.
And not wasting those food
Or never rebunds his crews in emotionless way
Always own my hearts
I'm going to do everything I can to create a society together that doesn't put up with people like that anymore.
More recently I worked somewhere we had to throw out everything because upper management was afraid we'd overbake and give free food to the homeless or eat it ourselves.
I once worked at a place that was losing millions due to a bad business model and those at the top implemented ‘civil protection’, banned tips and taking away food as though their employees were collectively stealing millions.
I worked at a warehouse, and sometimes the packages would get damaged so the product had to be thrown out.
Since it was food, we kept a bunch to eat during pauses.
And ofc that became forbidden real fast...
They told us they did that because they might resell some of it later, but they litteraly never did.
We strike down at thee foolish peasant. Thank us for the pleasure of our displeasure
But we couldn't just throw them away, or take them home. I had to physically smash them so no one could return one fished out of the trash. Just senseless waste
It's fucking gross ain't it
He will also take fresh dinners over. It is a family owned business
Beautiful
Actually, maybe the old owner also sucked, but he owned more places and was never there, and the shift bosses were cool.

Mysteriously, the amount of accidentally screwed up pizzas that needed to be thrown away increased dramatically.
