Since they seem really set on using that promo shot, let's review, and pass along to any newbies:
- do not watch Grave w/your kids (teens, ok your call)
- do not watch Grave w/strong drink
- do not watch Grave alone
- DO NOT watch Grave in MH crisis, or even mild upset

She cried for days. It broke her for years. Traumatized her.
...her friends had not considered the fact she was a survivor of the khmer rouge...
Yeah. Thread lightly there.

There's actually an animated movie about the Khmer Rouge that I consider on par with Grave of the Fireflies for how difficult it is to watch.
Grace of the Fireflies and Dancer in the Dark
IRREVERSIBLE. (It's great cinema, but not everyone needs to see it even once.)

The only movie that fucked me up more was AI: Artificial Intelligence, and it may have been where I was at the time in my life, but it began stabbing me in the heart at the outset, and I stayed with it for hours praying for a reprieve that never came.
They showed a short at the museum which was entirely in Japanese, and I didn't understand a word but it was still better
Fox(!?!) did so much better with My Neighbour Totoro...
I wonder what it says that I'm contemplating a second viewing (over 20 years after the first)
He studied abroad in Japan last year. We visited Hiroshima together. 😶
and
-watch something less depressing afterwards, like se7en or the mist.
Really glad I'll have a chance to watch this film, but part of why I didn't when it was more available is knowing it's going to scoop out my insides. I think that's necessary to be confronted with, but also requires a care plan.

It is very good at its aims.
About 10 minutes in, our son and I pressed him on it and he insisted it was "just the set up" and "it gets better".
Most traumatic thing I've ever seen, and I'm a cancer nurse.
The summary is enough. I believe it's a masterpiece. I'm not watching it.
* the part where, when I think about it, I usually start cackling in hysterical disbelief.
It is extremely well made, but extremely affecting in an utterly gruelling way. We were watching it knowing only that it was a Studio Ghibli film
But, it's like Schindler's List, there's a lot of mental and emotional prep work before going into it.

I love the movie 💖
Production for this film, BEAUTIFUL.
Story itself, emotionally charged and historical.
I absolutely agree with your notes!
I can't describe exactly how those 3-4 hours rewired my brain but there is def a Before The Sleepover/After The Sleepover paradigm shift in my memory
Also, if you choose not to watch Grave, don't land on PLAGUE DOGS as an alternative.
Isao Takahata DID survive the firebombings, though. There's an interview on the CPM DVD release where he talks about his experiences, and how they helped the film portrayal.
I have a few friends that don't cry from movies and they admitted to bawling to it and being shaken for a while.
it is a rare US history class which covers nanking and also firebombing Tokyo anymore.
Is it worth watching? Yes.
Do you need to watch it again? Up to you. It's not going to be less of a gut punch the second time.
