Fuck Cameron Henderson. I’m targeting journalists and not outlets at this point, because the outlets may publish the story, but they just want clicks. The journalists write the story. This goes both ways. I’m also gonna point out the good ones. Hopefully more are good than bad. We might see repeats.
Trump has groomed his cult to believe their objectively incorrect opinions are facts and anyone correcting them is an attack or censorship. Discrediting experts and distorting truth is fascism 101.
She is a minister; she spoke the truth. It was NOT an ambush. They engineered a hostile takeover of this country. They will have to deal with the backlash, plain and simple, and we will get our country back.
Perhaps, but the Telegraph group is notoriously conservative, so its framing of the story is unsurprising. The same story is covered very differently elsewhere, so the critical purchase of the term 'legacy media' is lost. I think that our responses need to be much more precise.
One of reasons I'm on @bsky.app is for the positive vibe & I always try to retain at least some semblance of that positivity in all my dealings and posts.
That said, I'll just come out and say it: The Daily Telegraph are scum.
Simple as. End of.
@dailytelegraph.bsky.social @marymcnamara.bsky.social
Dump & Clump had the audacity to come onto her turf and extract a norm they felt due them by tradition (ha!), expecting everyone to play along…which, for the most part, they did. Then, they got exactly what they deserved. And the rest of us got a master class and marching orders. Thank God.
The fact they’ll use the word “attacked” here but will simultaneously say shit like “underage Palestinian stumbles into path of a bullet” when the IDF shoots children
Genuinely some of the most vile and hypocritical shit I’ve seen in a while
One way of opposing the common Jesus/Trump followers is to always return to the ONE thing you absolutely cannot divert from as a Christian: Foregiveness.
Always remind them that the pain of forgiveness is the cross they as Christians must bear.
The Telegraph is demanding we deny the evidence we see right in front of us, because anyone who saw the sermon should be able to tell you that it was not an ambush. Requesting someone show empathy is not an attack.
🤝 wasnt too confounding*-- disappointed in most folks who're excusing this
*i went cross country twice in 2023 (long story), and saw the election map in the social fabric-- i was disappointed (both the salute, AND my country), but not surprised (lived in rural midwest for 15 years 🫠)
The use of the word "ambush" connotes a cynicism and intent that the author couldn't know is true about the pastor unless he asked her about her motives .
Ambushed?! Apparently, someone hasn’t attended a church/prayer service to understand how those giving homilies/sermons work. Those in the pews are a captive audience. In this particular instance, the people in the front row were not free to leave b/c they didn’t like what they were hearing. Oh well.
She asked for mercy for ALL the people who are scared because these thugs have made threats on counterfactual motivations for years now. She didn’t say that Donald Trump is a pedophile, rapist, and terrorist. It was merely the scent of the full truth about that monster.
It's only an ambush b/c the Trump Admin has NO advance team.
There's no competence. One lowly staffer who bothered to watch a couple videos of sermons from the cathedral, or just read their web site could have anticipated the congregation lives Jesus's call far better than most elected Republicans.
Trump:”why didnt you warn me about that?”
Trump team:” sir, its a church, we thought you knew they would talk about mercy and compassion “
Trump:”how would i know that? I’ve only talked to evangelicals”
Watching 'devout' man Vance confer urgently with is wife during that prayer really shows him up for the sinner he is.
But I'll still "love the sinner, hate the sin" exactly as much as his ilk did for us gays in the past.
‘Mercy’, ‘Scared’ it’s like they have to diminish and demean every actual description and virtuous word in there. The media are incredibly complicit in the downplaying of horrendous acts of regression.
Important moment, all souls reach into themselves,, some felt anger most felt yes, we must never loose our Humanity and Human Rights, how you felt is who you are
Brilliant- ‘mercy’ & ‘scared’ in mocking quotations while true victims, Trump & Vance, are attacked & ambushed. Timing perfect when violent thugs who did actually ambush & attack are pardoned. Works has gone topsy f@cking turvy.
They were ambushed! Who expected a preacher in a church to ask for others to have mercy on others. Unheard of! Definitely not a core belief of religion the bishop follows.
These monsters despise freedom. Of religion, of expression, of conscience, of thought. Trans people make them so furious because we are so radically free.
"UK NEWS WEBSITE OF THE YEAR 2024" is literally at the top of the page, and the headline sounds like it was written by Goebbels' preserved brain in a jar.
Matthew Shepherd's remains are interred at this same National Cathedral. Trump's goons tear gassed clergy under the care of this Bishop so Trump could get a photo op. Trump/Vance chose to go there to pray. It's like claiming you were ambushed by a getting a bill at the end of a restaurant meal.
It’s beyond self-parody. Hey, @kartoonistkelly.bsky.social, they’re stealing your routines - “innocent authoritarians” looking on with a tear in their eyes while “selfish virtue-signalers” hurl abuse from the pulpit!
On numerous occasions, I’ve been literally ambushed by conservative/fundamentalist Christians trying to convert me. This was not an ambush. These morons walked into a church, heard the literal fucking Gospel, and have the audacity to act like such a thing is an attack.
But Jesus was pretty brutal in his attacks on the rich and powerful so maybe if they’d ever read even the thinnest sliver of a Gospel they’d have expected this.
Tbf, the politically ascendant Christian ideology believes that Jesus believed in a strong border or w/e so this is in part an exposed fault line of sectarian argument.
You can fix the whole thing without changing a word, just by taking the scare-quotes off "mercy" and "scared", and putting them on "ambushed" and "attacked".
The Torygraph is angrier at someone telling a guy who is openly pushing bigoted policies to show mercy, than said guy attempting a coup and letting out the violent criminals who assisted it. You can really see their priorities in how this shitty rag portrays it.
I mean, yeah, but the current Pope is at least trying to drag the Catholic Church (kicking and screaming) into, like, the 19th century? He's by no means a progressive figure by any secular standard, but he's the best Pope since at least John XXIII.
He's still anti-abortion and anti-queer/trans people, but he's done a lot toward downplaying 'sexual' sin as a main concern of the Church and spends a lot of his time yelling about aocial justice and economic justice. (I'm not Catholic, just an interested observer.)
The paying readers, sure, but that doesn't matter nowadays. Media corporations don't need actual customers. Their primary role is to distort public discourse and pressure governments to favour their owners and investors.
Wish more people understood this - falling sales are less of a problem if TV and radio are still reading out your headlines and inviting your journalists on
I told my parents that I would not visit them until they stopped buying it and if I saw it there when I came I would immediately leave. I was backed up by my siblings. The stopped!
“Scared” in scare quotes! As if the objective of persecuting people is not to make them scared! “Mercy” in scare quotes! As if it’s a foreign word in the mouth of a bishop!
to be fair, they use quotes to indicate that it's a direct quote, not to indicate dubiousness/sarcasm. the article is awful but that's just journalistic style convention
hey i used to write headlines for a living and there were a thousand different, better ways to write that headline. "journalistic style convention" FOH, don't speak on things you don't know about.
editors are often subliterate reactionaries too, unfortunately. step aside and let someone with reading comprehension skills take your job, you can go be a game streamer or something
sorry! i see people often misinterpreting things journalists are required to do (like using "allegedly" to avoid lawsuits) so it's a pet peeve of mine. should have checked the bio & you're right
Incredible framing of a lone christian minister speaking out for christian values of love, empathy and kindness - but important in the current era to have no illusions about newspapers like Telegraph
Always the Tory-graph.
In the 80s I attended a Free Mandela march in London. Guardian said 1/4 million marchers. Independent said 100,000. Telegraph said 20,000.
🧐
Youngers might think that everyone loved Mandela then given how they see him now. Nope. Tories hated him/ANC. In Ireland the Dunnes strike/boycott is LOVED now, but then? Irish workers who refused to stock SA goods were arrested and seen as borderline pawns of 'terrorism'/IRA/communists.
More, on how they were treated at the time (the same state tumbles over itself today to tell us how great they were. THEN, they were arrested and ridiculed, and the trades union didn't exactly cover themselves in glory either, mind).
Not much of an ambush when it’s right in the Bible. If Trump doesn’t want to hear people talk like that, maybe avoid churches… like he did his entire life BEFORE becoming a political figure.
"She said she thought it was brutal that Trump was standing over the tattered bodies of several trans people, hurling abuse at them. We thought that her saying that was really nasty and out of line."
And she went at them like no one has ever been attacked, viciously throwing strong words from the left side of her mouth, from which, btw, she was dripping blood, a real kapow!, as they say.
Wow is that the real headline? Incredible how culpable media outlets like this are in creating the angry, misinformed world we live in now. A headline like this creates such division and anger by being so misleading and bias, what a mess.
I’m an American and I don’t know the Telegraph but they clearly want you to be afraid of the soft-spoken mercy enthusiast and NOT the billionaire friend to the violent racists
Blessed are the merciful... Jesus would find it interesting that some people think a bishop urging a POTUS to show mercy is somehow an "attack."
Thanks, evangelicals, for electing genuine evil as POTUS.
Just when you think the Telegraph cannot sink lower, it does. It long ago dropped any pretence of humanity, but it never loses its power to shock. The people that write such things are literally the kinds of people who pushed others into gas chambers. I really worry for Bishop Budde’s safety.
And here of course comes the revenge. The man who collected millions of "Christian" votes, sold Inauguration Bibles to line his own pockets, who can't quote a line of scripture, lies about praying (& everything else), uses his 4 year old's vocabulary to describe a call for Christian mercy as "nasty"
It was happening quite a long time ago. He's just a catalyst that just gave them the OK to no longer hide it and be openly shitty as if cruelty will finally solve things.
And every single time he says "mental institutions" he's reminding us that he STILL doesn't understand that "political asylum" and "insane asylum" are different things.
The Telegraph was once a great newspaper. Tory, yes. But Tories once had respect for faith. The Bishop’s homily was not an ambush as anyone who bothered to listen to, or read, the whole thing with an open mind would surely attest. It was a plea for unity based on respect for human dignity and truth.

So, they’ve not read those bibles they’re selling?
It was a bishop asking for mercy!
God I hate these people!

There. I fixed the quotes for The Telegraph.
Begging for mercy is a vicious assault
Yeah, that's where we are now, isn't it?
Believe it or not, that isn't even close to the worst thing there
News 24/7 for the next 4 years.
Trump's rape cult don't care what's in the Bible. Just what they can get away with.

The “President” is now tweeting about the Bishop
calling her nasty, left wing and boring”
Truly we are in strange times.
Still, wild!
So strange for that figure to be on the socially liberal side of any issue.
I've heard the sports coverage is decent though.
Or at least madder than usual.
I’m with Sam’s interpretation on this one.
“Please do not explain my own job to me. The urge is hard to resist, I know”
In the 80s I attended a Free Mandela march in London. Guardian said 1/4 million marchers. Independent said 100,000. Telegraph said 20,000.
🧐
Guardian 1/2 mil
Independent 250k
Times 100k
Telegraph 20k
For a few years after leaving, I'd tell that story to teach fellow USers about a 'free' press with open political affiliations.
(I'm not great at crowd estimates but I'd guess 200k actual?)
Thanks, evangelicals, for electing genuine evil as POTUS.
Saying Jesus’ words to people who call themselves “Christian” is now an attack, y’all.
Christianity is a dead letter.
I agree. Deport all of them. That's Amerindian land.
They came to her church.
