There’s long been a phenomenon of Latino immigrants who came here legally resenting those who did not, but if they think the Trump Mass Deportation Purge will see them as distinct groups they’re in for a brutally rude awakening.

These are also the people who will remove *birthright* citizenship--no they won't want for laws & courts--and will determine whether or not you will be a citizen based on who your parents were, how long your ancestors were here, and other things that properly feel of 1920s Southern segregation.
ummm, I'm guessing that as far as the DJT groupies are concerned, that nary a fuck will be given to the niceties about how one identifies and what your actual citizenship status may be. The thing about Nazi's, the rules are for them to interpret and decide and if "someone" CLAIMS you're illegal...
Just wait until the reports go in after a neighbor dispute, from the GOP party blockwardens and everyone with a grudge. Anyone caught “without papers” will disappear into a Kafkaesque hell of internment camps, and the suspension of habeas corpus. The country would be fucked.
i saw a big roadside sign recently that said "legal immigrants for trump", it's just so… delusional. undocumented immigrants are not the cause of racism... racists are the cause
it's like if i said "real transsexuals for trump!" because i thought republicans would only go after nonbinaries.
I honestly don’t think that is the thing that pulls in some Latino votes for Don Cheeto; as deep as Latinos can be in the US of A. There are certain societal influences that remain past first or second generations: Offspring…and that trickles down to abortion. Trump has been good at exploiting this.
Working overseas. Watching Olympics. Track & Field. White guy yells at tv, "run n...er run." A second later a Brazilian yells the exact same at the tv. I told the Brazilian that if it were another Brazilian running the white guy would say the same about him. Brazilian did not believe it. smh
Too many people willing to throw people they deem different from them to the hounds. This one doing it in the name of becoming part of the rich and powerful club of the white man...it least in his own mind.
*Their* families won't be deported, because they're "the good ones who came in the right way." (meaning being white and willing to marry Donald Trump. Idk what is going on w Vance's wife/family tho.)
Many here under a temporary protected status program that doesn't itself provide any sort of legal status. As soon as the program is ended, they're deportable.
Looks like DHS can just terminate TPS for, say, the Haitians and deport them (or disappear them) before the courts can weigh in. And the composition of the courts has changed considerably since the last time they tried this...
Note also that once you surrender your documents to authorities, you no longer have them. Fascist authorities are not sticklers for respecting "rights".
Have made that exact statement many times! Unfortunately they typically don't believe it - but I have neighbors & relatives who could quickly prove it.
I cannot understand supporting a political movement that uses people who look like me as scapegoats, no matter how much I aligned with them on other issues.
It’s more than resentment. Every immigrant community protects folks who gamed the system. Similar to the “my abortion was legit, yours is a sin” phenom, there’s also some “my technically illegal crossing/remain was legit, yours is a crime” happening.
It’s hard for me to understand why they think cops who extrajudicially kill brown people now, won’t also roll through town rounding up anyone they think “looks foreign” & detain them without regard for their documented status. It’s too naive.
It’s no different than the white people who talk about their immigrant grandparents coming to this country and having minimal paperwork to be here legally. Republicans are ignorant of history. They equate checking in at Ellis Island to an expensive decade-long ordeal just to get a visa.
remember the interviews with people who after Trump was elected didn't think *their* undocumented loved one would be deported, but instead it will be entire communities who didn't realize that *their* communities would be under attack from Trump's cops & Proud Boys slinging their people into camps
yes, it will be like that, but on a much, much grander scale, including successful local small bidness owners who backed Trump who thought they'd have an in
"Yeah, sure, a valued community member and someone I admire lost their entire life because of the guy I voted for, and that sucks a bit, but I paid $5 less in income taxes this year—and isn’t that what’s really important here?"
I remember an audio interview with a guy who was a member of Hitler Youth as a child. He remembered when the SS rounded up the Jews in his small town. He was surprised. Why *these* nice Jews who were his neighbors? He felt sad and confused. But oh well….
they can and will make up all kinds of accusations such that anyone they grab and fling into camps or 3rd countries will be the bad hombres
plus you'll also have the sorts of things that went on in Afghanistan where neighbors sent rivals to Gitmo etc simply by claiming they were Al Qa'ida, etc
It just proves people don’t vote with any serious thought, or if they do, they assume normalcy is a sufficient guardrail against the unthinkable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalcy_bias
A LOT of people will be surprised when Hispanics where were born here, who have lived in the states for multiple generations, will be targeted for deportation by Stephen Miller’s SS squads.
Yup. And they’ve been told this numerous times and refuse to listen. So part of me won’t have much sympathy for them if/when it happens. I’m just fed up with people refusing to acknowledge they won’t be victim to tyranny.
"Temo didn’t figure his vote for President Donald Trump would affect them personally. That was before the enforcement of Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy toward illegal immigrants."
It isn't like this hasn't already happened. His past admin focused on legal immigration like terminating TPS, public charge reg changes, reviewing citizenship determinations, showing up to detain people at adjustment of status hearings and more.
Don't discount the level of misogyny in this voting group, still strong in Latin culture. Hispanic Catholics are interesting, though, on abortion. More pragmatic. The Latino women will lean Blue, men Red, and the only question is which will be more motivated to go and vote.
It won't matter if they are naturalized citizens. trump will denaturalize them and deport them. They don't seem to understand, he and especially that ghoul Stephen Miller wants a white America - so they all gotta go.
I'm an immigrant from Canada. Married to an American. I have a PhD. So really, my legal immigration path was as easy as it gets. And it was immensely challenging and expensive. I'm continually surprised that folks have anything other than empathy for illegal immigrants.
Immigration is part of the legal system and there are two legal systems — one of the wealthy and one for the poor. The Republican party wants to keep it this way.
Let’s hope we don’t have to find out - because “Trump 2: The Sequel - the gloves are off and this time it’s racist AF” is going to take the US right back to the Civil War.
I don’t think framing this through a focus on immigration is particularly informative. Latinos are prime targets for social media rot and a good chunk of my South American family is Trump pilled on culture war issues without ever having considered moving to the US.
Watched the movie Lone Star the other day. Its portrait of Latino immigration over a span of 4 or 5 decades, and the politics of immigration, really has not dated much at all in the last 3 decades since the film was made.
Sad to see a lot of people getting sucked in by the framing of the headline, as if it were an honest report. Blaming Latinos, the usual "face-eating leopards" stuff.
This. They don't understand or want to. Their money, if they "look" like white Americans...none of that will save them. Heck they'll grab anyone with a Hispanic name then let the "system" take its time. They're NOT safe & need to wake up.
Hey, it's not only Latino immigrants who came here legally. I have family who came here illegally, naturalized and are now diehard trumpers. It's gross, pathetic, and embarrassing.
I'm just waiting for this national psychosis to break. There's no getting through to them. Any attempt to dissuade them only causes them to dig in deeper.
I ran a girls’ soccer club in LA. When Trump was elected, families stopped coming to practice bc they were worried about being (mistakenly) grabbed by ICE.
One father had come illegally years ago but an Obama rule had given his job legal status…and then Trump canceled it.
We’d have 2-day tournaments in San Diego. Getting a hotel room and staying overnight was a financial burden for them but driving past the immigration station twice was too big a risk.
So many ways that people’s lives were made worse—more dangerous, more anxious.
Yes, there are a few working-class people like that.but the majority of the GOP voters, even here in the South, are middle management types, landlords, small business owners, etc.
Voting GOP is very much in their interests and they keep the system rigged in their favor with gerrymandering.
Trump, and before him Bush, gave the Rich lower taxes and created record deficits. The Dems had to raise taxes on the middle/lower classes to pay for it, since the GOP had enough hold on Congress to prevent reinstating higher taxes for the rich.
Tho I will say this contradicts others who have claimed the reduction in lead is why serial killers were less prominent after the 80s...which implies it's the boomers who had more lead exposure. That claim may be more conjecture, though, than this.
Some of the most conservative voters in Texas are Hispanic and Mexican-American… in that they’re 6th gen Americans whose ancestors were Mexican citizens. And yes they too will get to enjoy what happens when This wins, if we can’t stop it. Mexican Repatriation ended in 1939 but…history can repeat
Obviously not data, but the two undecideds I spoke to yesterday in PA were both registered D Latino men. They weren’t attracted to Trump, but seemed to be getting a lot of messaging that Harris is bad too.
Exactly. All those images of immigrants Trump is using to juice up the hate in his rallies don’t come with some extensive bio attached to weed out “good” from “bad” - to them if you look it, you are it.
I think you are conflating Latino and Immigrant. The majority of Latinos are not immigrants any more than Irish Americans are immigrants. Maybe their grandparents were. But they aren’t.
Too many lefty commentators assume all Latinos are immigrant or immigrant-adjacent. It isn’t true.
No, its that a lot of us lefties ., including me, a lefty Latino who was born here in america, assume "well he wasnt an immigrant, he was born here but latino" means fuck all to ICE
This isn't about what you or I understand. My wife and 1 of my 3 daughters are Latino immigrants.
This is about understanding voting patterns in the wider Latino community. The first step in doing so is understanding that is is enormously diverse and large numbers of Latinos aren't immigrants.
My comment has nothing to do with what I am aware of.
I am pointing out correctly that not all Latinos are immigrants. Many have generational roots in the US. So it is frankly wrong and presumptuous to equate Latinos with immigrants. Especially when trying to understand voting patterns.
Hon, the only person here who is conflating Latinos with immigrants is you. The OP didn't make any such claim. You are doing a standard "You like pancakes? WHY DO YOU HATE WAFFLES?" take here.
Go read the original post. The article clipping referenced polling data on Latino voters with no mention of what percentage of them (if any) were immigrants.
The comment was about "legal immigrants"
It is presumptuous to assume that Latino voters are necessarily immigrants. Many are not.
For example, the article blurb you are commenting on said nothing about immigrants. It was about Latino voters. Some of whom may be immigrants, but I expect the majority are not.
We live in the Phoenix area and a few months back I asked our landscaper if he had any concerns over Trump's deportation plan. I was surprised when he answered "no", because he is here legally and he could not be convinced that any brown or black person is at risk.
Unfortunately, the news media has decided that’s not a story - when it is actually THE story. They can’t do mass deportations without huge, systemic errors and injustices - and a massive hit to the economy. But it’s a non-story unworthy of blanket breathless coverage like Hilary’s email practices.
It’s a dark irony that the criminalization of Latino immigration is largely a legacy of the Western Hemisphere quota in the 1965 liberalization of U.S. immigration law.
Exact so.
I also wonder whether these polls accurately reflect the preferences of Latinos who actually vote?
Is it really a block vote? I mean do folks from Columbia vote as do those from Venezuela or the DR? Are they sampled correctly?
I'm guessing some of this is due to internalized oppression? They might falsely believe that they can prove their loyalty to the regime by parroting its hatred. Didn't work out too well for the Association of German National Jews, as I recall.
However, Latino culture tends to be conservative: more religious, more family-oriented, more entrepreneurial, more socially conservative, more fiscally conservative, etc. Many fled socialist regimes!
They tend to align themselves with Dems to counter discrimination, not for policy preferences.
Just wait until the first Cubans are deported from Florida.
They see themselves as untouchable Europeans, and look down on all of the other Latin American immigrants.
“But the leopards were not supposed to eat my face!” they will tell Steve Miller as he forces them into the cattle car to carry out Trump’s denaturalization scheme.
In immigration policy circles, the joke goes: You know an immigrant group has really become American when they start pissing on the next group of immigrants.
All these people who don’t understand that Republicans see them all as “brown.” They think they’re part of the in-group when they’re actually seen as useful idiots.

Bugs, do you think they'll get to join?
"We hate you a bit less" is bad messaging.
And yet...
But also Dem messaging frequently treats Latinos as single issue victims

I guess those are sacrifices he would make at the altar of power.
Imagine the encouragement that would give to local law enforcement and random white vigilantes to harass and assault anyone they deemed suspect
Guess we’ll get to know what it’s like to carry freedom papers.
Documentation means nothing. It's entirely racial.

He got grabbed within a month of inauguration, and deported two months later.
And he’d warned his wife that Trump would target people like him, but she said not to worry because Trump would only go after "bad hombres"

Um, the headline is a LIE. That's the story!
The language suggests that Trump commands a strong majority of Latino support while Harris is struggling to make inroads.
I really hate our media.
It struck me as odd that she missed out on the social justice messages but liked all of the traditional roles and rules.
But his followers will certainly terrorize, assault and maybe even kill them.
That's how scapegoating people works.
Can you prove you are here in the country legally? Do you carry documentation that says that at all times? I don't. But then, I'm white.
One father had come illegally years ago but an Obama rule had given his job legal status…and then Trump canceled it.
Daily terror/uncertainty.
So many ways that people’s lives were made worse—more dangerous, more anxious.
I guess something like half the country's adults are delusional/cognitively impaired.
So what if they put a face-eating leopard who promises lower taxes in power?
Surely, the face-eating leopard won't eat THEIR faces.
Like how "Globalists" is code for "The Jews."
These rural poor folks are just as reliant on PA as urban poor. They don't want PA cut off for everyone, just the folks they consider "undesirable."
They feel themselves worthy of their entitlements. I know plenty of the types from where I grew up.
Voting GOP is very much in their interests and they keep the system rigged in their favor with gerrymandering.
so it's a win-win for the GOP and their rich friends.

I see many Red State voter databases in the future Trump Regime.
He'll need the military to get the Blue State ones.
