Teslas don't use any of the fancy stuff other self-driving cars do. They just like, use a couple cameras and hope for the best?
Well, it turns out that's fine, because humans (the thing self driving is explicitly trying to replace) don't either.

It gives me similar vibes to a 90's Ford Taurus, except at least the rest of that car's horrid design matched.
But Tesla's way of tackling it recalls the nakedness of a concept car. Or like, a big dent, lol.
I thought that was a clever bit of writing. Guess Tesla did too!
"Sure, we just get a couple of developers working on a statistical model, a few cameras, and we can replicate a billion years of evolution when it comes to spacial awareness, pattern recognition and action-reaction-decision loops.
How hard can it be?"
Think about the skill required to recklessly weave through traffic at 20 mph over the speed limit and not be dead yet!
Compared to average miles driven per year (~15k), 1% of people will be injured in a car crash.
While they still can't even have drivers go down a stretch of highway without being completely alert Waymo already has autonomous taxis in four major cities with two more on the way.
Tesla stock is so overvalued....
Their entire valuation is based on concept and not tangible, physical, products.
I understand that's a bit how stocks are but it's all smoke and mirrors and hype with Tesla.

"Tesla cannot be liable for failing to provide technology that it did not advertise and that did not exist."
Lies, manipulations, blames. That's what they do.

Really weird stance to literally go "We reinvented the wheel."
Their new wheel:
eyes are a SENSorial aparatus with tiny SENSORS that are SENSITIVE to light and light changes
so are cameras
they have built in SENSORSSSSS to detect light and a cpu to process light changes
hhhhhh
He wants to create artificial humans with all the same weaknesses instead of reducing car crashes.
Remember getting in a car with that guy with no affect and who would sometimes randomly accelerate at children? We remember
Other auto-makers understand this and use multiple sensors including LIDAR and/or mmWave radar to augment cameras.

What a concept thank you melon very cool
a MUX hologram
shouting at you calling
you an IDIOT! and waving
around a Chainsaw, yet? can't wait
A surveillance camera can see and the brain behind it’s now an insane fascist and his dictator.
It’s a Swasticar, the new Gestapo on wheels.
*And to use one very simple example, how do the big brains at Tesla think autofocus on the most bog standard Canon camera actually works?
We had electric cars in the 1890s, so musk got rich by accomplishing nothing but making EVERYONE on the road less safe.
BYD charges 15k for their whole new self driving car software included.
So youre right, a waymo that self drives a little is "hardly the same" as the America's most dangerous brand, that cant do that at all
If [crash], then [dont] 🤣
If he catches you, you’re through!
Either they want cars to remain terrible, or they're complete morons. Maybe both.
I’m mortified! 😢
Wtf is wrong with tesla people
Cheers!
And we can perceive depth and speed in a moving field extremely well.

Sure bro.
I drive a Mini, so I know I'm small but damn I'm not invisible????
Also I'm not an asshole so... 🤷♀️
It's pretty much this:
Besides, if I could, I would plug a lidar sensor/network interface suite directly into my brain if I could.
I relate to wanting others to buy EVs but I recommend looking more into pushing for public transit and walkable/cyclable cities.
Plus they'll allow for smaller EVs which helps a lot.
2. It's going to take decades to rebuild cities.
My wording was specific if you are going to buy a new car make it an EV.
I mean my EV is charged from my roof top solar panels.
Also, I checked and I misread that as 'EVs and ICEVs' instead of 'EVs over ICEVs'
my bad lol
Less so for the vehicles that are extremely soundproofed.
So yeah, just like me :o
This isn't just another egregiously misinformed and oversimplified claim that relies on specious equivocation. Right, right.
.... only the brain in the car has about the same processing power as the brain of a wasp. So that's all good...
Because, stupid.
Now please don't be self councious about this for the next hours.

Here is a cool Kurzgesagt video that talks about what our brain is doing at all times:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo_e0EvEZn8
And said eyes-and-brain are *not* in a rolling dumpster.
Tesla: what if we just used the same stuff as humans and hoped it was safer… 🤷🏼♂️
e.g. Give Tesla driver a wide berth, they might be trying some beta feature with their eyes closed 😉
Also, I can't believe a tech company doesn't understand this but HUMANS ARE NOT COMPUTERS!
Most autonomous vehicles combine camera + lidar to match human vision.
Tesla dropped the lidar - they are trying to drive like a one eye'd person who can't move his head.
He is clearly just a social awkward medium brain and not a techy.
They just run programs.
Programs don't have the ability to take the unexpected into account, not even differential (best guess) algorithms.
A program will run over anything it doesn't see as an obstacle...like a small dog or pothole.
It will never be able to think outside of its programming.
It will never be able to recognize anything that its program does not cover.
It will not be able to see a child standing on the sidewalk and predict that the child is about to walk into the street.
A human can.
Hell, it can't even tell a train from a bunch of trucks.
Because it's not able to create new concepts on its own. That's the lack of intuition.
It is simple probability calculations shoved into a matrix where multiple relationships are being correlated simultaneously.
This is not thinking— nor is it true learning.
But it is also important that we do not ascribe human attributes to it.
We are selling our species short when we do that.
This all leads us down a path of implicit resignation.
The AI oligarchy is more than happy to sell us into that.
This is what makes Musk so dangerous.
i for one do hope musk abuses nepotism and corruption as usual to get FSD approved, and then we just wait for the first wile e coyote assassination
Surely, the whole fucking point of a self-driving vehicle is to get it to drive better and more safely than a human driver?
@tonaarts.bsky.social
😎
that's still more than what a tesla has.
Not sure how they think this is a good selling point.
(Another is that compute power of human vision alone is orders of magnitude greater than a fucking Tesla)
Let's replicate that with AI.
Tesla is just doing this because they're cheap and cameras cost peanuts. They don't even have a way to clean the cameras as far as I know.
How TF are they gonna say they don't need sensors for fully automated driving??

He'd try to make planes that flap wings cuz that's how birds do it
Also, if my memory serves me right, I'm pretty sure one of the arguments for self-driving cars was that they'd be safer than humans driving, when it was being advertised as a thing
Also a 16-year old human can learn to drive in less than a week…
If the object DON'T move at all it's as far as the background, if it does "how much" is the relative distance.
A camera on a car cannot move or focus on one object.
Cars could convey distance in a really precise way (and some does, like a SUPER CHEAP KIA) with a LIDAR.
A cheap LIDAR costs less than €40, and it's so easy to use it's implemented even in arduino projects.
