Twitter posts no longer have timestamps. That's exactly what you want on a network built on being a realtime information source. Possibly the worst to ever do it in social media

I won't give them that much credit. I can believe that they're so desperate to save money they're pinching pennies by removing every little bit of data from a post that they can.
Twitter under Elon also tended to show me things mostly from ~8-14hrs ago (I guess in part so that only blue checks get to live in the "now"? And also to make it cheaper to bundle feeds) so this hides that
Haven't updated Twitter since the one that changed the logo to the X. My icon still has the bird and it's still called Twitter. I haven't been able to read a QRT or properly watch a video on there for months. But that's why I haven't uninstalled the app yet, even tho bluesky has fully replaced it
The timestamps will still be there in the APIs because if they remove them a lot of stuff will break. So everybody programmatically analyzing his tweet behaviour will still be able to do that. They can, of course, make the decision to break their API.
Not only is the timestamp embedded everywhere in the Twitter API, it's even embedded in the tweet number (aka “snowflake”): take the tweet number, shift it right by 22 bits, and add 1288834974657 (for some reason…), and you get the time in milliseconds since the Unix epoch.
Elon is trying to hide that posts so much during the night. If people are still keeping track of it with the API or snowflake, then I'm sure he'll start breaking that too.
So I went and checked and I guess ~1.28 million seconds is November 2010 in Unix Epoch, which is about when "New Twitter" finished roll-out, so it's probably just an offset from then?
Yeah, but it's really bizarre to have taken something so incredibly specific as 2010-11-04T02:42:54.657Z as epoch. Normally one picks a rounder date (like the Unix epoch or the GPS epoch chose). Did Dick Costolo do something really special at this specific time?
Yeah, the thing you don't want to do when your platform is underpressure is breaking things, potentially prodding the more inert towards the exit. But of course the owner decides.
Of course. My whole theory is he bought the app so he could slowly shut it down in an effort to keep people from criticizing him on it, only to end up being responsible for a surge in alternative apps taking his spot. I doubt it'll survive much longer before bankruptcy at this point.
New meaning to "race against the clock). I have kept the last true Twitter version for 3 accounts who haven't crossed over (yet?), but this old phone is dying.
It's got to be at least a year since I've updated. I never got tweet tags, I haven't been able to see checkmarks since they went paid lol, can't see QTs.
Good new > Settings > Moderation lets you set up a blocked words list. With just a couple of taps, you'll never hear about Twitter/Musk/Porcupines/Whatever again
Well, in all fairness, it is something going on at a rival platform. Discussion of other platforms has always been a thing when something is going on over on another.
I don't use the site anymore more or less but when I do I still use the Twitter app because Musk, failure that he is, haven't implemented a version check for posting and nothing he has introduced since has convinced me to update.
Browser version still has timestamps. Though who knows for how long. As for the app, I haven't updated mine for years. It still has the bird on it and "tweet". lol
You really don't need to update the app.
I left un-updated as Twitter (with the Bird icon and everything) until about 3-4 months ago when I uninstalled it and left.
Nothing stopped working.
i don't use twitter anymore but also i haven't allowed the app to update since before the branding change so i basically have the bird app tombstone in my phone
I still have an app from before the takeover, and last time I checked (not for a while) it still mostly worked, and I still had some features that had been removed
I was rocking three straight years of no updates when he bought it and resolved I never would. Then one of his improvements broke the old AF version I was using and I uninstalled and never looked back.
I have the old icon'd app on my phone too. Not actually connected to my(/any) account; I think I just accidentally installed it once sometime before the changeover, and kept it as a middle finger to "x".
Eh. Force of habit. Posting my pod/newsletter there. There are some friends I talk to that haven't made it over here, and without group chats there is still a pull. It's dying though. Joyless. Barely read it.
please do the absolute lowest effort delete when it comes to it like you're waiting on an uber and just zap I'd rather stand in the wind and be bored waiting
I hear you. It was terribly difficult to delete my account. I had been there for many, many years. Only in the last few weeks have I seen a majority of the people I interacted with appear here. It's only a matter of time at this stage that it joins Bebo and Myspace and the chapter closes.
Who said that? Latest version here and... full timestamps. I'm gonna call "urban myth" or maybe "shameless disinformation". Shame there's no Community Notes on BlueSky ~
You don’t have to prove anything to me. I was just telling you what someone said. I don’t know who it was, just that I saw it a few posts back before I saw yours.
FWIW, I think it’s a real thing. I peeked over there and saw people complaining. Idk if it has to do with updates or not. 🤷🏻♀️
Why make stuff up?
The timestamp format is same as it was and identical to bluesky + most other timeline apps:
< 7 day is relative time (2h, 3d, etc)
> 7 day is short, absolute date (Nov 27)
Hover to see full timestamp
Click post and full timestamp is displayed on bottom
Does the API call still have the full time stamp in it & he only changed the display of it in the UI? We could still find out and then someone could build a chrome plugin that puts the time back in.
and as I just discovered, the time is encoded in the tweetid anyway since 2010. It's called the SnowflakeID (because Snowflakes are unique, not the current derogatory use of the word).
"Growing" valuations are not the same as "growing" production. Increasing valuations can reflect higher rates of returns on capital outlays, and one way of doing that (thereby increasing margins) is to create scarcity
Hold on. Is he doing this because he is big mad about that heat map thingy which showed him tweeting pretty much 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, non-stop since the Twitter purchase? He doesn't want us to know that he, like many other stoned weirdos, tweets his hottest takes at 3AM local time?
Musk got tired of being called out for posting throughout the night while having his ketamine benders. Its funny how he is literally looking at twitter like a user that has full control so he keep changing features that are universally good but he personally does not like or that make him look bad.
Time appears in the browser on my desktop but not in the app itself, wonder if this is them rolling out the change selectively or if they just don't have the engineering capability to roll changes out universally any more.
Maybe it's because he has no genuine intention of it being a "real-time information source" but an environment to sow dissent, hate, and propagate misinformation for the masses.
Did you see that recent graph to show the increase of tweets over the years? It escalated to 24/7 not showing a break for sleep. I don’t think they were scheduled tweets using a timed app. Possibly linked or coinciding with ketamine usage?
Weird, timestamps show for me, both inside the tweet itself and by hovering over the short timestamp from a feed. Maybe they're doing A/B testing? (I doubt they do that any more, given how few staff are left, but it's still a possibility.)
"These ancient tweets are all new content! Come back, please, liberal turds! I hate you! I need you! What do you want? I can censor more words, give you more ads, I'll do anything!"
“I can care less” means you currently care a little bit.
“I could NOT care less” is the correct English for the point I believe you are trying to make.
I know that’s what you meant to say.
What you said means the opposite of what you wished to convey.
If you CAN care less, that means you must care a little bit. One fuck at least.
If you had said I CAN’T care less then you have literally zero fucks to give because you can’t give less than zero.
I've just checked and even updated the app, yet still on app and web (both mobile and desktop) I can see timestamp for posts. It's located under the post just under the buttons from your ss. Maybe they test that for now. However, I don't remember where the timestamp was before 😅
I realize this is a dumb thing to say, but I really can't get over just how thoroughly twitter owns his mind and yet he doesn't understand a single solitary part of it
Here’s the thing…the users need to drive your product. The CEO and his silly whims and ego shouldn’t drive the product. And since he doesn’t have advertisers who are the customers? Who is he selling data to and how is he driving engagement. He has zero strategy.
Next Musk is gonna trip on his own balls and bang his head on the ground then decide to give away all his money and assets, then he will take a vow of silence and work in a soup kitchen til he passes peacefully in his sleep at some point in the future, forgotten and unknown to the world.
It's not built on realtime information. It's built on DISinformation and the institution of a worldwide oligarchy. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
I can't imagine a worse CEO of anything than Musk. Truly we live in a cursed society. Scout out a floating door, cause its full speed ahead and you're gonna need it.
My immediate reaction to reading this was "did they break their timestamp endpoint?" And then I realized it wouldn't really matter either way. Breaking functionality one way or the other and then claiming victory is the new MO.
I wouldn’t know since I’m on timeout there for replying a MAGA that threatened my life. But since I’m not paying for X I got ported and the MAGA can remain and threaten others…
A baffling decision, pal. A blatant disregard for transparency. But in the end, it's a futile attempt to control the narrative. The truth will always find a way. The market, like time, marches on, unyielding and indifferent to corporate whims.
It says "31s" in the screenshot you shared. Is that not a timestamp? Yes, it's in a relative, rather than absolute format, but that doesn't seem like a huge deal.
The phrase, "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity," is 1) just a phrase, not based in anything and 2) doesn't apply to antisocial people who consistently choose malice and abuse intentionally
No you're so right, when people excuse abuse with "they didn't know," it just literally enables the abuse. Elon isn't a toddler no matter how much he cosplays as his toddler son online
I swear Musk is high when he makes these bone headed moves.
Doesn't matter he ruined twitter and nothing he can do will bring it back, we are happy on BlueSky
it’s hilarious that he privated likes because people made fun of him for gooning on main
he removed the ability to block users because he got mad at people blocking him
and now he’s deleting time stamps because people laugh at him for sleeping 3h a day and ketamine trip-posting conspiracy theories
This is such a bizarrely specific feature to remove. Too specific imo, to the point where I’m absolutely certain it’s malicious.
Why go out of your way to remove something like that? If only to speed up the amount of misinformation getting out into the world, and to further confuse the masses?
Removal of headlines from news stories, weakening the block functionality, removing timestamps, next thing he's gonna do is remove the name of the person who tweeted, unless it's his own.
And, if he didn’t like your tweet, your address too. 🤦♂️ He’s already tweeting federal employees’s names who in his eyes have “meaningless” jobs. You know what comes next. It’s the fascism. Always the fascism.
This is ABSOLUTELY because X got the South Korea news almost a full hour later than Bluesky. He removed timestamps because he doesn't want screenshots of the posts to show how late they were. Incredible.
I mean that gives them a lot of organizational credit to them that the observed a situation and were able to put a feature together for release 24 hours later.
That's a level of organizational cohesion I don't believe that X has.
the South Korea news was the first test of whether Bluesky was ready to replace twitter on breaking news and it totally succeeded. Any journalists who are still wasting their time over there must be there because they feel more at home among the ruins
mid Vichy hacks are more comfortable over there because there they get rewarded for their shitty autocrat-enabling takes, and here they get pulverized.
Oh sorry, I thought it was a joke. There was an attempted coup, where the president declared martial law late at night on Monday/early Tuesday. They shut it down really quickly and are moving to impeach him.
I'd assume the app already had the capability and that all that was required was a config change rather than an app update. Config change can be pushed/pulled at any time?
It’s almost as if he’s incredibly thin-skinned, paranoid, insecure, insane, and more high on his own supply than perhaps anyone in history with the possible exception of his newest bestie Mango Mussolini.
Can’t say when they decided this, but you can rule out South Korea. If that was the case the web would be updated first. You can’t push out a iOS app update in hours (barring emergency).
Just more rearranging desk chairs on the SS Twitter.
I assume if X keeps pestering people to subscribe that people will stay no matter how badly E disables the product, right?
E keeps shooting himself (I think he's above the foot now) so much that he had to reload but I assume that if it got his orange-haired master the Pres then it paid off for him.
That may be part of it, but let's not pretend Trump won because of Twitter and not because the Dems ran a terrible campaign that alienated and scolded their base, causing a very low voter turnout.
When Trump was on the ballot, there was no credible argument that the Democrats needed to campaign differently.
The election was an open-book IQ test and America failed it. End of story. Feel free to argue that point if you want to scream into a void. I block idiots.
I mean by now we all understand he's using it as his own personal Kingmaker propaganda hose.
but it does also seem like he goes out of his way to make the user experience as miserable as possible for everyone but himself and the malevolent Nazi/foreign trolls.
The worst Elmo could have done is to discard the brand Twitter, a brand so successful it generated its very own verb, to substitute it with the adolescent "X".
After changing the taste of Coke, that is the worst marketing move in History. The rest is just systematic destruction.
I hate him more than everything, but you can actually see them if you click on the tweet, they are just not shown in the feed. Partly to satisfy his stupid ideas of aesthetics, but probably also to reduce the vertical footprint of the tweets so you can scroll past more ads per finger movement.

And with a proportionally more radicalized userbase.
That's preparing for bank robbery on Every level but I'm not a crypto bro.
That may remove admissability in court but I'm not a lawyer either.
Hard to get rid of!
The more we mention or hold space for that site in any fashion the longer it holds cultural relevance.
Once left behind I advocate leaving it entirely there.
I left un-updated as Twitter (with the Bird icon and everything) until about 3-4 months ago when I uninstalled it and left.
Nothing stopped working.
Timestamps work just fine, date and time.
A/B testing? I’m not seeing this change.
I was rocking three straight years of no updates when he bought it and resolved I never would. Then one of his improvements broke the old AF version I was using and I uninstalled and never looked back.
Not that I use it nowadays anyway...
If you're on an iThingy, it's available as a paid app.
FWIW, I think it’s a real thing. I peeked over there and saw people complaining. Idk if it has to do with updates or not. 🤷🏻♀️
Seems like the only tech companies that aren't completely rotting are the ones being run by original founders (except for maybe Meta)

I wonder if it's different through the API, if there still is an API that is.
If he does eventually remove it from the web interface, I'm guessing xcancel will continue to display it.
https://xcancel.com/edzitron/status/1864417728326414813
Most likely the API is still serving it because I haven't updated the app and I can still see the stamps
https://oduwsdl.github.io/tweetedat/
It doesn't need to use the API to get the timestamp.

This is why he did away with it

Still, an inexplicable decision, like so many since late October/early November 2022
You can’t use it for evidence if you can’t prove when it was posted publicly. 😵
😭

The full date is still there when you hover over it
Elon doesn't want people to know that he's up tweak tweeting.
That cute little blue bird is dead
There is now only an ugly black X in its place 😡
Pretty dumb, though not unexpected. #PedoGuy is in charge of that site, afterall.
"We've *always* been at war with EastAsia - errrr... TIMESTAMPS! Yeah, Timestamps!..."
So, no more timestamps

An informed populace would never stand for Trump or his policies.
So Musk, MBS of Saudi Arabia and whoever else hates America ponied up to break Twitter. Then Trump won the election. Success!

a bit counter intuitive.
