Women: We esteem ourselves as legitimate political subjects and men’s social equals.
Men, red faced with rage, a vein throbbing in their temple and sweat beading at their brow: IDK something about this moment doesn’t sit right with me. Can’t put my finger on it.
"I, a man, felt alienated that women organized a Women's March and made gender-specific attire for them to sport at their Women's March. Rather than march alongside them, which I was welcomed to do by the organizers, I decided to stay home. Made me feel really alienated."
Confusing not wanting to admit something with being unable to articulate something. He's not stupid. He can use words. He just doesn't want to damn himself.
I can relate to John. My first moment of feeling alienated was when I was 8 and an old man asked to eat me out, then at 10 a guy in his 20s tried to kiss me, then SA at 15, then at 16 a level worse than that, then at 19 my boyfriend throwing me down stairs, then at 32 getting SA again, sure.
Makes sense, the hats are offensive but the violent intent Trump espoused toward women that these women are protesting was not offensive. Yeah, just innocent locker room talk.
Seeing this picture with almost instant recognition and link to the purpose, still valid today-- proves its use.
Why this? unifying symbol- Instant identity and topic: pink= girl baby; Pu __y- T's boast; cheap & easy to get; invested time, small for souvenir, on and on. 1/2

Thank you very much for a genuine happy memory on seeing that picture. I wasn't there but recognizing the hats delighted me. May you have a good moment today too! 2/2
So many Terrifying Tales of Right-Wing Radicalization are either "the time I saw a bunch of angry women" or "the time I saw a bunch of just regular black people"
Basically they're all entitled and since that's their whole personality they're narcissists. Same people causing most of the problems throughout history.
Yes it's certainly both, although the trans women rhetoric is more eliminationist whereas for trans men its condescending chivalry and objectification as reproductive assets. So they're much louder about the former, but the obsession always has its mirror
Trans men are committing vandalism (destroying a womb that society owns). Trans women are committing fraud (pretending to be a womb). It's fucked, but one of these they consider worse than the other.
Basically the old viral “this is the future that liberals want” where the trans woman and the Muslim woman are sitting peacefully next to each other on the train minding their own business.
"She was being aggressive!" Random white person at a perfectly reasonable black woman making a forceful point, right before the white person bursts into tears.
In the meantime, what radicalized me, a conservative at the time, was attending the wedding of my aunt and her partner. Seems ridiculous now, but the power of all their friends and their same sex partners celebrating their marriage shook me to my core. It was so beautiful and changed me 4ever.
Every single game with a female protagonist had these incels crying about not being catered to for made up reasons. Just like every industry and every other facet of society.
I am not sure why we need to “see ourselves” in everything. Sometimes- it’s nice- a touchpoint or a different way of seeing myself. But I love exploring other perspectives, other humans, other ways.
i was thinking the other day about how when board games were advertised in the 80s and 90s, the kid who got to be depicted winning in every commercial was always a white boy and usually he wore a red shirt. this was so common we clocked it as children.
For one: why we’d Ineed to see myself in a work of the imagination?
I want to see & experience the world that others engage! I’ll never be a 19th c. woman facing marriage as the decisive ok/terrible life choice, but I love reading the world thru Elizabeth Bennet’s eyes!
The same people who absolutely HATED these women for protesting while… idk knitting I guess… turned around and started ranting about why there weren’t more protests now
I have a feeling I'm missing something here but.... This guy says he became far right because of a photo of people wearing ugly hats?
That's... Man I wish it was that easy to sway people. What's the clothing for turning someone awesome?
Racism is a major problem in this country but at least EVERYONE knows it is a problem & they can recognize it & we all know it needs to be fixed.
Sexism/misogyny is just as big of a problem but most people have no clue how deeply infected we are with it so nobody ever considers it needs to be fixed.
When he saw that many women mad at the same time he decided…time to take their rights away quick…how dare they March against women being treated like sperm receptacles & unequal to men? Beoches all!
He has a bad case of "I'm not gonna take that shit from a WOMAN".
I know someone who would watch sporting events in Spanish, a language he is not fluent in, rather than listen to a female sportscaster.
“At the gate of Saint-Antoine, an immense aqueduct has been built for the purpose of carrying off the bloodshed at the executions. Every day, four men were employed in taking it up in buckets and conveying it to this horrid reservoir of butchery.”
A report on the Terror, 1794
Nobody seems to remember this, but the point about the hats was that pink isn't a colour that's commonly used for sports teams, political movements or other mass gatherings in the US (eww girly) which meant less chance of old photos being misattributed.
What's funny is that liberal women like the ones in the picture have been against Trump since day 1. They are the strongest ideological soldiers the democrats have.
the more i had conversation with noah the more he made it apparent that he himself is just an idiot. instead of understanding and embracing, this is the take he had
Smugly outing yourself as pro-rape and anti-woman. Must be a rite of passage for this gang of villains. That or he’s begging to be punched in the throat .
I can relate to Noah here bc in HS I went through a period where I didn't like women wearing baseball hats and after conducting my own research it turns out the problem was me. so maybe he should pursue that line of thought.
Here's the thing: adults should accept truths instead of being children. As you said you were a teenager. These people are so entrenched in their narcissistic feelings of being personally attacked when they can't handle a basic aspect of reality that they rage 'cause it's permissible in society.
Okay, I have had this thought about a lot of right-wing positions. “I think I kinda get it because I remember feeling that way when I was 14.” Why don’t some people ever grow up?
They can't get over their insecurities. They refuse to introspect. Why would they accept hard truths aboutthemselves and reality when they could just be raging incels, who globally, get MASSIVE support?
You’re right. We had to get jobs and work shoulder to shoulder with women and men of all backgrounds. We had to learn to understand them. We had to learn how the world really works.
“I thought some of the protestors in 2017 were kind of cringe so I’ve decided to radically alter my politics to completely support whatever the Nazis want”
I guess it was the sight of people wearing “pale-red” caps? Did he think that only “dark red” caps with a bill are “appropriate”? (Especially those with a four-word propaganda phrase emblazoned on them).
They think standing in someone’s neck will keep their asses above the water, immune to the plague, fed when the food’s gone, hydrated when the water’s been poisoned, unsourced, while the planet burns around them. Their answer to everything stand on someone’s neck.
I still feel some kind of a way about how the pink got recast as a racial discrimination thing and still not sure how that happened and if it was organic or planted or ??
I think that was 100% an outside whisper campaign to divide and conquer with the claim the feminism wasn't "intersectional" enough and didn't hold enough space for anyone but white cis het women, and suddenly it became a competition between all subsets of women to see which group was Queen of Pain.
I would guess someone hired a PR firm like the one Justin Baldoni hired to destroy Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds, and they just used the exact same playbook. People are stupid and easily distracted, and once they buy into a storyline, they refuse to divest themselves of the lies.
I always thought it was planted or a terminal online thing. It was just too neat. Fem people get a symbol, let's derail said symbol.
My hat was red. I don't like pink. I have never seen cooter color yarn, either. I did see a lot of rainbow hats too in Queer color combo I liked those, should make 1
Mine is black. I sewed it out of fleece because I can't knit. It's black because I hate wearing pink, but I also appreciated the way people interpreted it as my bringing bad luck down upon the bastard.
Anyway, I still wear it. It's comfy and stuck full of my most annoying buttons. :)
I knew someone with a fleece one.
I still have mine somewhere. I don't really wear many hats but it was one of my favorites. I do think we need some sort of easily spotted symbol. Unfortunately we're also easy to derail, it's the nature of coalition movements.. 😞
Mine hangs on the back of my door. I have a surgically reconstructed skull, so there aren't many hats that fit me. A comfy one is precious. I wear it when it's cold. And if people hassle me, it's usually because I'm ALSO wearing a mask, so fuck'em. I wasn't gonna listen anyway.
I just have a large hard, hats just don't work well for me either.
I don't get hassled much but it's generally the hair or mask. Bless their little hearts.
Yep - they were handknit by actual women, not by kids in factories, and they were pink as in Planned Parenthood's color. Still enrages me that people were like, "this is peak white feminism" like...no? Maybe know what you're talking about first? Also our private parts aren't fuschia?
I'm pretty sure that was astroturfed and so was the whole anti-Handmaid's Tale rants. They were effective tools for white women protestors, and white supremacy recognizes that if they can't claim to be protecting white women, the whole thing falls apart
Criticizing the hats as peak white feminism kinda misses the fact that it's fairly normal for political movements to use specific clothing items as symbols
And the pussy hats are a beginner friendly knitting pattern
For a brief moment in time my sisters admitted to each other that we had been sexually assaulted at some time in our lives. We bonded and lifted each other with a simple knitted hat. I will always love that moment and that pink hat.
That he noticed he had a reactionary response to this but didn’t bother examining why that might be and interrogating that impulse tells you everything you need to know about Noah
Of course Noah doesn’t like women who are vocal in their disapproval of sexual assault. For most of his life, his exposure to women has been through pornography.
Stealing this because I have thoughts. Thank you for raising this. It’s an un- or under-spoken thing about cis het men these days that really bothers me.
Even more damning for a pundit than having bigoted ideas about the world, is to display so publicly a lack of awareness, of how one is seen by others.
He advertises himself as a savvy observer of world events yet is stunningly blind to what his words sound like when read by others.
At our 2017 Women's March the community was learning a few lessons. Leading up to it, organizers did a lot of hand-wringing & tone-policing. Day of, I marched with a bunch of angry trans and enby queers who shouted themselves hoarse sparring with pink-hats holding a 'Love Trumps Hate' poster.
Yeah cat ears reflecting push back to allowing a grab em by the pussy guy entering our White House I can see how that would be so difficult for you 🙄 What an idiot
Yeah this is the part that's confusing to me also. Like bro, maybe you should seek therapy to figure out your feelings instead of stewing in a right wing cesspool and believing you aren't the problem in this situation.
He was always irritating but solid on economics. Now he thinks he’s a public intellectual and an expert on everything and has become insufferable and offensive.
you know, one thing that people don't often mention is that there's a practical reason for the hat's ubiquity: it's a very simple pattern/shape, so beginning knitters can make it without too much trouble
of course that doesn't give that dumb, awful motherfucker a reason to whine, so

Now more than ever your power and numbers are needed!
(But if you want to bring the hats too, do your thing)
I've never understood that one. An...economist?? Not even a leading one?
There's nothing tyranny, including patriarchy, hates more than people finding power in number.
I suspect it was in his first draft, though.
They lost their rights!
In terms of people, more accurately identify the moment...the women in these hats did!
That Noah Smith is such a raging misogynist that he finds an image of politically mobilized women "stupid" and "offensive."
Or that he lacks the self-awareness to keep that opinion to himself.
Love it when they tell on themselves 💕
This is like if oedipus tweeted out "cant put my finger on it but my wife is giving me huge mommy vibes"
This isnt content, its an emotional tragedy
Who cares what you think.
I've always disliked Noah, but isn't he a leftie??
his words don't generally bear that out tho
FUCK these MF'ers
Hiding would be a good choice.
