Disappointing but not surprising and definitely not unusual, alas. How the hell you get a Masters degree with otherwise having a profound lack of common sense or general awareness of what is going on around you will always confound me. I have to
assume that some people can focus on a narrow objective while not having a focus on the broader world around them. It doesn't imply anything flattering about typical education processes. And it won't create many polymaths.
This is a college graduate who is saying things so stupid that it is hard to know where to start with him. This is the kind of person who, if you try to explain things or tell him the truth, he will go into andefensive crouch & hold onto his position even harder.
Low information voter. And by that I mean he has discerned very little information from anything he’s experienced about Trump and has poorly analyzed the effects of tariffs on economies or how they work. If this is how a teacher, who presumably has a college degree thinks….🙄🙄🤪🤪
My first thought was that a high school teacher should have a better understanding of things - all the answers are in the back of the book, for crying out loud! - but then I remembered my high school.
Wow, Perry Hunter wants leftist policies, so he voted for a fascist. This is why the GOP spent 40+ years destroying the U.S. education system. They depend upon idiots to keep them in power.
These people are low information voters. He probably didn’t even know Trump was a fascist and he certainly didn’t understand the consequences of tariffs
I have a coworker whose my age (nearly 30) who likes playing all these video games that combat fascism while at the same time constantly regurgitating all of the fascist talking points that Trump and the GOP make. I really wish that I could reach people like him. They seem too set in their ways.
Yes!! Education, not public shaming.
Too many here think they can somehow defeat a despot by screaming abuse at one another. This is exactly what the orange felon wants you to do.
True, people don’t like being educated or shown up but it’s still the only way out of this mess.
The world would surely rejoice if despots were removed one way or another. I still think the chances of creating a peaceful society, without making a much bigger mess, are slim with this approach.
I have a coworker who's my age (nearly 30) who works an assembly line with me who constantly makes the same talking points while also talking about how he likes playing video games that combat fascism. I feel the journalist's pain.
I mean, makes sense. Can't say I know that stuff either or was ever taught it. Mind you, I think it would be good if people did know, but if teachers don't know it, it makes sense why I never learned it in school.
He should be more than capable of doing basic research into a presidential candidate’s political agenda. The concept of who pays for a tariff is basic.
Trump was already president and absolutely showed he is a fascist.
These excuses are bullshit and normalize profound ignorance
His very own blogspot is entirely about being a coach. I'm not suggesting he's a great coach, I'm suggesting it's the focus of his career and it's commonplace for school districts to have coaches teach academic subjects on the side, rather than have scholars coach basketball in their spare time.
He’s on the roster of his public high school as a teacher. The school is small enough I’d guess (based on experience in public education) that he teaches multiple subjects.
Schools that small rarely hire “community (only) coaches”.
I get that he's not just a coach, but I also know that most schools hire coaches who are then given academic classes in subjects the schools don't consider to be very important. It's been that way for 75 years. It's the "coach" credential that gets them the job, first and foremost.
You are almost there! Of course you tax their stock gains, increase property tax on homes over a certain size, tax corporations profits, have incredible taxes on private planes and yachts, etc. Get rid of the social security income cap.
Tax all investment income (Capital gains) over $100k/yr!
Make it a steep progressive rate above that!
No single human can be ethical with wealth in the multiple-billions! All humans are corruptible.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸✊✊✊✌️✌️✌️
It's not that I don't think wealthy shouldn't exist but that they on whole are so fucking cheap. Most of their wealth just sits there. You know they're all like Leon Skum & never give a bit away.
Like fat, stupid, Smaug on his piles of treasure.
They believe that taxation is immortal because they believe that if you require any assistance at all in life, it is because you are a failure & should be allowed to die.
They are also racists & the idea of a poor black or brown person getting anything through common good is wrong.
Why would he give up a job as a High School Varsity coach to go coach in an elementary school? Is he less interested in the basketball than in prayer in schools and gospel based training methods?
certainly not every coach is an idiot, many brilliant ones, I'm sure; but when I hear someone is a high school teacher who thinks tariffs are going to get us out of debt, I think they may not have been selected for their academic prowess
The NYT also interviewed Perry Hunter on January 29, about what “average Americans” thought about Trump’s” first week. He was also interviewed on March 23. And a week ago. Multiple other times. Maybe find another American?
Funny that a guy who claims to want universal healthcare and free education after high school voted for a party that wouldn’t do either of those even with all the money in the world.
I worked with many coaches who taught social studies. They defaulted to social studies, as if it is easier to teach than science, math and ELA. But teaching history and civics WELL is every bit as hard. I have always thought this compromise for sports hurts American democracy.
Omg having studied Economics this makes me so annoyed. People have no idea how government finances work. This isn’t your fucking bank account or credit card Perry
Its not even that!!! You wouldn't have to touch military spending to have free at point of use healthcare, free lunches for kids, and a fully funded Social Security. That's the real horror.
Money paid in interest on bonds is a policy choice. There is no functional reason for Treasury to issue bonds and then spend reserves rather than just spending reserves into existence. It's functionally identicall, except issuing bonds allows people who hold reserves to get rich. ZIRP Forever.
But the argument is correct - we could cut back spending even further and easily pay for free college for everyone. Universal healthcare would pay for itself and more, we wouldn't even need to take from the military budget. We pay more than any country in the world for our broken healthcare system.
Not a historic low. Maybe a low AFTER world War 2, but check defense spending from 1900 to 1938 (before the Lend Lease Act). Other than a spike for World War 1, it was very low. It was even less from 1870-1899.
Yes but the world changed after WW2, especially for the USA.
I don't remember the US having a global military presence ensuring stability, while maintaining a nuclear arsenal and a dozen advanced weapons systems in 1908
The average American voter is a burnout libertarian PE teacher that failed so much at life they spend their days yelling at teenagers to do jumping jacks
The most painful part of this isn’t Trump or Musk, it’s the stupidity and complete other-worldness of the average American voter after decades of talk radio/Fox/online propaganda.
Republicans have never wanted any of that shit, just any make believe excuse to keep supporting Trump—fucking cult.
So close to getting it, yet so far. Yes Perry, we could have all that stuff that other countries have, but one party keeps preventing that, and you keep voting for them
View from the Uk- you always had the money to do those things but your Gov didn’t want to tax the billionaires, or just rich people in general. Told you it was socialism, it’s not.
That quote can't be an actual representation of what he thinks. He's just throwing that out like a "why feed Africans when hungry Americans exist" while also not ever wanting to feed Americans, actually, but refusing to admit it.
Sooo who is going to tell this guy increased revenues from tariffs aren't going to those things but to give Zuckerberg and Bezos bigger tax breaks while showering Elon with more subsidies?
He must have a substance abuse problem.
or
Someone gave him a teaching credential?
or
Did he kill the real Perry Hunter and assume his identity?
or
Did he lose his remote and can't figure out how to change the channel from Fox News?
or
He thinks Billy Madison is part of the intellectual elite?
So this statement is in fact supportive of higher tax rates but instead of opting for that the guy voted for… this. Well, Mr Hunter should then be glad that more of his paycheck will go to the state.
The math I saw was pretty straightforward. The best case for tariff revenue is just a fraction of what income taxes bring in and we keep cutting income tax rates. Also, tariffs are regressive taxes, income taxes are progressive, so tariffs cause more pain than income taxes do.
Above avg! I think this publication went out of its way to find someone who even understood that tarriffs are a tax! The average voter didn’t hear much about tariffs and when they did it was to parrot Trump’s nonsense that we were making other countries pay.
The average American voter thinks they're conservative, free market capitalists. In reality they are borderline socialists that have been red scared into cowering at the word social or public.
I say this all the time. #Republican voters want the same core benefits from the government that Democrats and progressives do, but their echo chamber dilutes these needs with hatred and fear.
#WakeUp
Exactly. It’s like when you see red states like Missouri vote for a progressive ballot initiative but then turn around and vote for elected officials who are against said initiatives.
“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: there must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”
A high school teacher who doesn’t understand tariffs, or that universal healthcare, or feeding the poor are considered socialist, communist, marxist (pick one) policies by republicans.
Well, the public keeps the pay low and treats teachers like shit, so you are going to attract a lot of saints who put up with it for the kids, and also some really terrible losers.
When the party of "We" (made up of dems/libs/progs) reveals their agenda, the party of "Me" (made up of abusive individuals) screams foul, flops on the floor like a dying fish and foams at the mouth about such universal concepts. Yet voting for the "Me" party is supposed to reap the same rewards?
A teacher that hates books, freedom of speech and human rights? WHO does he preaches to? he can't actually teach if he voted for Trump knowing that none of this would be taking place.
It should be renamed "How Six Trump Voters Are Reacting to His Tariffs."
I'd like to think those six are too stupid to be representative of this nation's voters, but sadly, that was not the case in the 2024 election. If we get a good result next time, it will be in spite of them.
Yeah, I wonder if that was the original theme of the story but then as a halfassed attempt to be balanced, they threw in the Black lady who voted for Harris 🤔
Every one of these dopes says they think it'll work out in the "long run" but have no idea of the timeframe. Most people assume we can open new factories overnight; in reality we don't even have the capacity or knowledge to create tools and dies for the factories that exist now.
And these regime spokespeople, e.g., Lutnick and Bessent, burbling about how there will be all these new jobs materializing, jobs that pay well - has any journalist asked them what these jobs will be, and how it will all happen? What's the mechanism?
Thanks for the gift article. I'm gobsmacked by these people's ignorance. This kind of reporting is why I dropped my subscription to the NYT but maybe I'm the one who's ignorant to the stupidity of the average American voter.
And Faux News is actually pedestrian compared to the brain rot that comes from far right podcasts like Sucker Carlson, Paul Bros, Tate Bros, Pim Tool, Bro Rogan, Benny Johnson, Candace Owens etc
Apparently, according to actual research, the coverage/recognition from Fox -- because Fox is perceived as a genuine mainstream "news" outlet -- plays a rather significant role in making the more fringe sources appear credible to their victims.
And, 6 out of 7 are over the age of 50. The one guy under the age of 50 is 46. Not very representative but be the country or balanced reporting at all.
I'm no economist, but esp after reading comments from the man in Dearborn MI (my birthplace/former hometown area), I'm just guffawed at his lack of concern 😳
Yeah, he's a real prize, isn't he? He read all of Trump's books (that weren't even written by Trump, and Trump himself probably never bothered to read them)
I'm sure the 'former Democrats' who voted for trump got their news from the @nytimes.com , which never covered trump's speeches or rallies truthfully but spent weeks with front page coverage on Biden's age.
I hope those writers are losing everything they have. They helped build this.
Where the hell do they find these people? A high school teacher who voted for Trump but wants to feed the poor and have universal health care and free higher education??
He thinks we should have all those things, but we can't afford them. So, presumably to be able to afford them, he voted for a guy (and party) that have repeatedly said not only should we not have those things, the government shouldn't be involved in them (or exist) at all?
Trump has weirdly somehow become a stand-in for people to vote for because they just pretend he's going to do a bunch of things he will never do and also he has told them he will never do.
Trump doesn't tend to speak against those things often, and a *lot* of people have this bonkers notion that, somehow, he's politically almost the opposite of the Republican Party on economics. (He is now, but only in the sense that his policies are bad for the markets)
Not even that. The US issues its own currency and can afford to purchase anything for sale in that currency, including the labour of people who want to be doctors, teachers and so on. Unless rich people are hiring all the teachers and doctors, their wealth is not a constraint on social spending.
It is becoming more clear how we got to this place. Thinking like that borders on insanity. These goobers are chickens, they voted for the weasels because the weasels said they would not hurt the chickens. The chickens believed the weasels with chicken feathers stuck to their mouths . . .
Just to be clear and underline something that has been said over and over, Harris + third party candidates combined got more votes than Trump. He barely squeaked out a popular vote victory. So let's not with the "average American voter" shit. Especially today, when so many are engaged in protest.
So you’re saying it took multiple candidates to have more votes than 1 guy? Yet he won the popular vote by millions? What’s your point here? All the millions of people who didn’t vote at all clearly were okay with trump winning
Your zero sum argument holds zero sum water. This is my point. There are PLENTY of people who didn't vote for a variety of reasons and claiming those reasons are all essentially "tacit approval of Trump" is idiotic and plays directly into right-wing assumptions about their own popularity/influence.
No it clearly shows they don’t have this deep fear and hatred enough to take an hour or 2 of their lives to go vote, they’re not the ones complaining and upset they lost
Oh sure ya the people who didn’t vote truly viewed trump as a threat to democracy and believed allll the fear mongering about him and they didn’t go vote because they were stricken with such intense fear they couldn’t leave their houses to try and prevent it.
Yeah. The “Average” American voter isn’t a trump voter. It’s a non trump voter. Doesn’t mean they’re a person who voted for Harris, but statistically means they didn’t vote for Trump.
Third party voters in swing states are literally just as at fault on a personal choice level for this admin as Trump voters in swing states. Its just math.
You and centrist Dems need to ask yourselves why it is that Harris/the party repelled voters to go third party or abstain. Stop insisting it has anything to do with Trump and look in the goddam mirror. Ask why someone like me, who DID vote for Harris, is arguing this case. It's not just f'ing math.
Yep, to make themselves look more valuable to school districts most ‘Coaches’ have to get certified to teach something besides how to run with a roundish object.
The worst teacher I ever had was a basketball ’Coach’ who they made teach Algebra (we just ran math ‘drills’). 😖✊😑
SMFH
Voters made ill-informed, bad choices. The media bears a lot of responsibility for its failure to explain how tariffs work and make clear how ignorant Trump is on how they work.
I can’t fucking imagine being a high school teacher and then being quoted in a newspaper article saying that. How embarrassing. How are his students meant to take this ignorant asshole seriously?
I got about $1500 to coach middle school wrestling a couple of years ago. But that was North Carolina, where teaching salaries are criminally low. I spent that small stipend, and much more, buying equipment for the kids.

Screen cap probably from a NY Times article about Trump voters. This person isn't dumb, they're ignorant. They want all the good things like universal health care and free college, if only there were a political party that fought for those things and a media that told the truth.
Who looks at the Republican Party and thinks they will provide universal healthcare? It is baffling how someone with any education could be so willfully ignorant.

Found his info. "Social studies" but it doesn't mention him actually TEACHING it, just coaching.
Fuck him.
I suspect given a different set of life choices I might have succumbed to 🍊🤡 simplistic idiocy.

We are cooked.
One of the privileges of whiteness is that you can be an absolute moron and still be employable far beyond your intellectual ability.
Or that there is any reason to believe this administration has any interest in providing universal health care, education or housing.
It's only interested in looting for billionaires.
Apparently he's a high school social studies teacher, which, welp.

Schools that small rarely hire “community (only) coaches”.
If you want to tax Musk, Zuck, and Bezos, you have to tax wealth, because their "incomes" are most likely somewhere around $100k.
Personally I think it should be illegal to use stock as collateral for loans, which is how the bastards operate.
I'm nowhere near seeing all of those things happen, and neither are you 😂
But that's all good things. INCREDIBLE taxes on yachts! Here here

Otherwise the military makes money by ensuring global stability. Costs more to get rid of it, just wait and see
