That was where it clicked for me *why* the cult acts like that. It's one part "we share EVERYTHING; not even your emotions are your own" and one part justification for their actions: "when one of us suffers, ALL of us suffer!"
If you read the script it makes it more clear but she was absolutely swept into the cult. She only saw her boyfriend ‘cheating’ because the cult drugged him and raped him.
Ooh then definitely don't do it. It's seriously fkd up. Some people are into that, and I can see value (sometimes e.g., Baby Reindeer) but imo this was over the top.
I would suggest watching "The Wicker Man" from 1973 if you have not seen it. Midsommar draws heavily from it - and the Wicker Man is so much better imho.
It set my personal record for said-out-loud, WTFs during a movie. It was amazing. Every time I thought I couldn't WTF any harder, boom, something out-weirded the last thing. If it's not clear, I freaking loved it.
There was a point where a face we saw earlier just -suddenly appeared- in some foliage near the end of the movie and it snapped my head back so hard I pulled a muscle in my neck. Nobody I watched it with saw it except for me.
I used to live in a neighborhood here in Chicago with a big Swedish population that would have an annual Midsommarfest street festival. My brain's going to associate it with this 100%
I am so sick of cults, movies about cults, and normalizing insanity. Let's bring back an inquisition on inquisitions. If you advocate for burning people alive, we get to burn you alive. Either have empathy for your fellow humans, or get wiped out. The paradox of tolerance 2.0. Projection Justice.
I'm from the rural Midwest, and the news tells me people falling from high places and getting clubbed to death with a mallet is pretty normal in Chicago.
The week after I had watched it I felt as ugly as if I had watched a beheading video. But now it's been a couple of years and I want to watch it again.
I’ve only seen Midsommar once & am still traumatized from it 😂🤷♀️ I remember talking to the TV & telling them more than once not to take drugs from strangers
It was an excellent but chilling and more than some may be able to handle. I was stunned for a it after and thought way too much about the ending,
For weeks.
Saw it in the theatre and turned to my friend at the end, grinning and giggling and wondering if I was a terrible person or just hated dudes in grad school.
Yeah it’s a crazy movie but I feel like Hereditary (the filmmakers first movie) is much better. More a straight horror with a hefty dose of real guttural grief.
I put it on randomly a month ago because I had heard raves about it forever. It is now permanently lodged in my brain. Enjoy it, if you can get past the opening 20 minutes? 😅
Decent set pieces. But otherwise meh. Too film school "look at my funky camera angle" as well as "this'll shock the pants off of em!" This movie and Hereditary, made me wish that I didn't have ears. Awful sound design.

On the other hand, for those who grew up in a high-control religion & left it... weirdly life-affirming.
Let the movie hold me down
Letting the days go by
There is movie underground
Went into it completely cold. Had no idea what the plot was. Didn't even know what genre it was.
after I saw it I couldn't sleep that night. every time I closed my eyes I saw... the movie
I mean oh my GOD
Like this movie is a lot even when you’re prepared for it
🤷♀️
* Also Midsommarfest as a name was poisoned for me by that movie, and I didn't even watch the whole thing. 😆😅
One of my favs lol
I’m not a huge horror fan so none of the dark cliches was good. But absolutely terrifying in full daylight.
Still traumatised by it
She’s having a great time! Emotional arc resolved! Love this for her.
Shame about everyone else she showed up with tho.
this week: putting the man in the bear and burning them both up
For weeks.

i'm fairly certain that the creator was trolling all of us.

You're gonna need wine for that one.
Hereditary just distills it into one, maybe two seconds.
Or it makes me think of this movie.
It's uniquely haunting and absolutely holds up. I saw it when it first came out and recently gave it a rewatch, and it hit like the first time.
