Well donkey Don blames Mexico and Canada for everything that enters US, it’s the US border guards responsibility, I saw people and thought criminals, traffickers….but IDEAS??? That’s bizarre
As someone who works in aerospace, I get training on this! Sending certain information to anyone located in another country qualifies as an "illegal export" and a national security threat. Look up ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and EAR (Export Administration Regulations).
See so ... that sounds like "information," not "ideas." If the graphic said "information" or "intellectual property" instead of "ideas," then okay. But it says "IDEAS."
You can't copyright an idea. Ideas aren't classified information. Nobody owns "ideas." So ... "illegal" "IDEAS" = very scary 😬
1. Clearly they were trying to put something in there for Intellectual Propery and it went awry. (Presumably this is the explanation they'll use.) 2. They didn't fucking care about the implication and put it on there anyway.
I guess USA and the people there are getting such nationalist, xenophobic, racist, intolerant, repellent, repugnant and haughty or superb, with a vomitive and nauseating kind of mind, as the German Nazis in WWII in the past... Same level... Shame of you...
" 'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end, we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.' " - "1984" - George Orwell
Are the ideas illegal or are the ideas illegally crossing the border? If an US citizen crossing the border has an illegal idea, will they deport the idea?
tbf IP enforcement has long been a means of censorship and propaganda and controlling people's movements and information intake, so linking to this just further cements the case that we're dealing with a full-fledged Stasi...
I thought about that and it’s possible but given the visa revocations based on digital media searches and material related to Palestine/Lebanon or even anti-Trump sentiment I suspect it’s more an ode to their very wide interpretation of terrorism and very old immigration laws.
This is where we've been headed for quite some time.
@thomhartmann.bsky.social hope you see this ASAP.
@maddow.msnbc.com @marcelias.bsky.social @briantylercohen.bsky.social @adamkinzinger.bsky.social @nicollewallace.bsky.social @michaelsteele.bsky.social @glennkirschner.bsky.social
“This may be” are the three words that have lead to the downfall of our country we’re in now. Every time there’s something too outlandish to accept, it always is “this may be a joke” “this may be misspoken” “this may be an exaggeration” then it happens and there’s nothing we can do.
It's *right next to* a Christian cross. I know, we're supposed to think it's the second-shittiest "X" ever conceived of, but it's very obviously a cross.
There is no moral universe in which ICE deserves the benefit of the doubt. In case there is any doubt on your part, what you’re doing in your post is what I am describing, correctly, as giving ICE the benefit of the doubt.
Do you think that their actions will be inconsistent with the stated belief that it’s their job to stop illegal ideas? Let them correct it if they didn’t mean what they said.
Why would you give them any benefit of the doubt here? Do you think there’s any reasonable doubt that they are fascists?
If you want to be generous, you can interpret that as wanting to prevent foreign extremists from entering the country, which, on paper, isn’t a bad idea.
However, that raises the question of just what the current ICE leadership defines as extremism. And the incredibly Orwellian phrasing.
Charitably, it could be taken to mean ideas such as radical Islam leading to terrorism, but ICE itself is mass prisoner abuse, so it's blind leading blind.
also fwiw, coming from someone with more than a little experience in graphic design for advertisements, unless that cross next to the word is part of ICE’s logo/symbol use, it also implies anything non-right wing Christian.
Nope that looks exactly like the design of every 2000s “edgy” flier for a movie or other youth group event that made being Christian seem rebellious and a bit dangerous .
My dad used to import random shit from Mexico to sell at hippie street fairs. One day, immigration stopped him to ask what he was transporting. He replied, "a bunch of shit." The customs officers scowled, checked, and found a truckload of fake 💩.
if a US citizen brings in a sea turtle or 10,000 large in his carryon I can see how that could be illegal but it's gonna get ugly if ideas are illegal...
It's gone. It's worth using https://archive.org to store copies of things like this so the administration can't just delete them and then claim they never posted it.
Canada Geese: Proudly bearing all of Canada's aggression, thereby leaving the populace free to be the friendly neighbors we Americans (with functioning brains) know and love.
Apparently it was "supposed to" say "intellectual property" instead of ideas. As if that would have fit on the graphic. Sounds like somebody got uncomfortable with the quiet part being said aloud.
True, they could have just put IP. Which would still be weird because as far as I'm aware, ICE has no authority to enforce international copyright law. But I guess I could be wrong, idk.
Graphic designer definitely put the word “ideas” in here looking for ideas for a fourth word and this snuck through because the people in charge interpreted it conceptually
Thought crime is real, JFC, abolish ice @democrats.org. People are being kidnapped and sent to concentration camps, literal Nazi shit. These are crimes act like it.
I am interested in what an “illegal” idea is. Are even my thoughts on what might be an “illegal idea” illegal? If so, are theirs illegal too and should we arrest them? Much to ponder. At this point, I’ve probably put more thought into it than the imbecile who decided to add “Ideas” to that poster.
But how do we stop them at the border tho? I’m VERY interested in exactly how ICE thinks that will work and does it involve something Elon has come up with?
In all seriousness? They did say they're going to search the social media profiles of immigrants for unmerican-type posts (such as pro-Palestine), so there's that
In many countries, the same first and last names are shared by hundreds of thousands of people (e.g. Jose Garcia, Ajay Patel, Chang Li). How will they know who is who?
They won't! They'll continue to grab people who have nothing to do with anything and just disappear them to Louisiana or El Salvador or god knows where!
Their families won't know, and neither will any lawyers who could try to help them. And the supreme court helped make this even more of a mess.
Seriously, yeah, but that’s stopping people. They can ban books and screw up conferences and hamstring universities but somehow, in these times, I’m pretty sure ICE can’t stop ideas at our border.
No, they can't do any of that. It's the assertion that they should be able to, though, that's the dangerous part. It's rhetoric that enables their base to attack others for expressing ideas even more than they are already.
taking this literally i'd say it's more like trump and the monsters responsible for things like p2025 are the kind of people that dystopian stories are written about
I am working on a story that is future dystopic and it's so hard because I can't write my villains as realistic because realistic villains are dumbasses that no one would take seriously.
Just rich dumbasses destroying lives thinking that the Empire, Rorschach, and Homelander are the good guys
i love writing tragic crusaders who tried to do good but took things too far, duty-bound punch-card villains with hearts of gold, antiheroes who just need a reason to hope again, true believers who yearn for good to rise from the ashes (the techbros we have don't count, their "good" is awful),…
How many researches, scientists, scholars etc. that are in the US are, either currently or upon seeing this, moving to or deciding to move to Canada or other nations now?
The US is lost... the 'free' is gone and all that will be left is the 'dumb'.
Yep, it's April 10, and we're already to the "illegal ideas" stage of totalitarianism. Shame we spent so much of the previous few decades actively fabricating a paranoid militarized police state. It's an unfortunate thing to have lying around when untrustworthy people have the keys to things.
The minerals, and materials that US takes from the rest of the world taking advantage of poor is also to stop 🛑 it - Americans ahahaha the ones that don't even know where America is in the map. Do you know what a map is? The money you think you pay doesn't pay what is being taken. So 🧲↩️🔄🔃🔙🔚

“It” is used to describe things.
So people are things to them.
And goes against the very idea of freedom liberty and free market

Resist.
Here’s an idea: uphold the Rule
of Law, the Constitution, due process. ICE should be deported if it can’t do that.

And why they’re checking devices.
I'd also agree that it doesn't seem likely that they really meant to say they want to stop the flow of ideas but IDK.

They mean precisely what they wrote there.
They view themselves as their Fuhrer's thought police.
It's only a matter of time until they routinely start murdering people they have (illegally) arrested and "disappeared".

I'm talking about the 'ideas' line. I don't think that's IP concerns they're talking about, as that falls under Property.
Why would you give them any benefit of the doubt here? Do you think there’s any reasonable doubt that they are fascists?
And with PR generally, messaging often does not represent reality, so it is surprising to me when it does.
In that context, it is a little surprising to see ICE go full Orwell on Insta. But cld be!

Since they are now scanning social media of immigrants for antisemitism…
I realize I could possibly be grasping at straws here .. but nothing surprises me about this administration anymore.
You know, all the things they call anyone who opposes them and their rich white male supremacy project.
The antisemitism thing is them wrecking the constitution and softening us up for similar US=Christianity thinking while scapegoating Jewish ppl.

How exactly do you know what ideas are illegal & who decides?
This is insane.

was right there, too.
How exactly does an "idea" illegally cross a border?
One day, I'll figure out how to electrify a kei truck.
There's a push for on street parking in my area, tiny cars are looking more and more like a really good idea.
But there's a company that just finished their prototyping and are moving to build their production:

(I know they have to make a profit, but it always floors me how expensive trucks are. In comparison, a kei truck is about... $10k [~$13k now]?)
