It was truly something to be a teenager & early adult between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the World Trade Center. That’s not just a nostalgic idealization of youth; we were in a moment that’s impossible to explain now.

I just want to be in middle school and play the Sega dreamcast for the first time again, instead of wondering if I'm going to be forced to live under authoritarianism.

I’m inclined to trust scientists over anecdotes; we’ve got 40 years of research by reputed orgs like U of Pittsburgh, Columbia, & many more.
Awful.
We could use some trying to understand that time now.
I was a freshman in high school, and I signed up for German as my foreign language, and then all of a sudden my language class was a social studies class.
And: I am very glad that I was lucky enough to attend a US High School pre-Columbine.

Before I learned they keep making new racist uncles.
But to be young was Heaven
—Wordsworth, I think
Not trying to yuck anyone's yum. If anything, I think many of us were sold bullshit by people who should have known better.
was the Wordsworth quote on a poster in my college library around the time the Wall came down & I felt that deep in my bones.
No wonder we're so beside ourselves now with the state of the world, we know we don't have to live like this!
Like all good things, it couldn’t last.
But to be young was very heaven!"
Wordsworth would have understood.
Which means, I can’t understand how we got this old.
And yes, amazing. I am grateful for it.
You see glimpses with right wing alt-media and Ruby Ridge / Waco, but it would be like that for everyone. Tuned in 24/7 to Rwanda, Yugoslav wars. Fear of domestic terrorism (OKC, Atlanta) Start of border crisis
… that didn’t last long
I do not pity the youth of today. They voted for trump, they'll get what they deserve.
really set unrealistic expectations

What would you do when you were there? I asked.
"I'd just walk around and take it all in."
Myself I'm just waiting for season 2 of Sandman
Crimea/Ukraine, and The Israel-Hamas/Hezbullah conflict are giving people a very rude awakening that the world is STILL a very dangerous place, and we need to step up.
This was before Catholics decided to socially merge with the crazier Evangelicals.
Religion metastasized in the 1980-90s.🔥🤷♂️
So hope existed.
the same party is currently in power since 2022, and has a "43% emissions by 2030" policy
the ozone hole is currently 3.5x the size of the continent
At some point we have to recognize fundamental truth: a large percentage of people are apathetic about and/or too stupid to understand it.
I think the problem is the disparity between science reporting and *pop-sci* reporting.
The latter definitely underplayed things
And "we had a really long time" and "next century" were true when you consider the 90s are 30 years ago and we *are* in the next century now.
I graduated highschool in 2000 and the concept of the new millennium seemed impossible. i get why we fumbled this so badly, but we knew.
