Scientists: Times New Roman 11 or Arial 10?
(I know, I know, but the work goes on while it still can because I have people who count on it.)

A different PI told me the same thing about Times New Roman 11.
Is this the science scandal everyone is talking about?!
And comic sans, obviously. But that goes without saying
And for proposals, most are reading a pdf on a screen, which can be enlarged.
But fair enough: TNR specifically performs poorly in most studies that I've seen.
TNR!
IIRC fonts with serifs like TNR are easier to read/follow in a wall of text, like in a proposal.
Is it for a paper? Times NR. (Serif is better for *reading* like a book…)
I'll have to remember that one :-)
Arial is our default font for broad accessibility. If you did want to go with a citable accessible standard, ‘Clear print’ documents must be 12 pt as a minimum.
Yea I’m old. So what.
(I have to save all of my ocular suffering for Chinese characters.)
Arial 10 always.
(I am old enough to maybe get away without)
(Palantino also officially NSF OK AFAIK)
Is there a serif font that is tolerable?
TMR is fine on a printed page but just causes eye strain on screen
Arial 11 is UKRI (UK funding agency) mandated font for grant submissions
Arial (not Arial Narrow), Courier New, or Palatino Linotype at a font size of 10 points or larger;
Times New Roman at a font size of 11 points or larger; or
Computer Modern family of fonts at a font size of 11 points or larger
Commence the skirmish.
(I think it was changed between January and May 2024) https://nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/nsf24_1.pdf?VersionId=ImnVCR.NDkOKTGKuDHHmterZQY3cXEDn
Arial 10 for presentations and outreach materials
(different spelling, I know)
Where the LaTeX nerds at?
Not justified on the right, Serif for the main text (e.g. Times, Georgia), Sans Serif for titles and figures (e.g. Arial, Helvetica), as per rules of typography.
with color hex #002554 and dammit if they’re gonna go to that much trouble to wag their overpriced consultant’s fingers at us over it, I’m gonna surrender to it like Veronica Lake surrendered to the Japanese, and nobody can stop me. MuahHaHa!

But I appreciate the empiricism!
We just submitted a grant that had so many required sections with bold headings on separate lines that fitting the guidelines meant jamming many lines per inch. NSF should remove Arial 10 from the PAPPG if it cares about readability.
"Hey, NSF! Arial 10 is a woke DEI font!"
(Sorry, but you gotta laugh, don't you?)
