Robertson’s beef jerky will come close to the shelf life if you vacuum seal and with water is close to steak as I’ve found in the overland jerky world. This stuff is dry. Sold in Love’s truck shops as their brand.
usually like 10-15 years for stuff like this but often much longer. idk this brand specifically, never tried any before and bought it on a whim. might test it out on an upcoming camping trip idk
As a meat cutter by trade I demand a photo of the contents to see exactly which "sirloin" cut they're using. Since they didn't say as much I'm damn sure it's not top sirloin..
Only the forgotten gods of the Neolithic will forgive you for this. Even Kronus, who devours all things, is giving you some serious side eye for your food choices.
They need to be rehydrated. The obvious option is to chop them up and add them to a stew, but the funny option would be to deep fry them and see what happens.
I wanna bring to your attention that Mountain House is doing a sale and a lot of their bulk things end up being like $7.50 a pack.
This picture tells me you may be the kinda guy to appreciate it lol
I couldnt tell you 😔 it was one of the most viscerally upsetting things ive eaten in my life and ive been too afraid to go near their fruits section since
Trader Joe's branded products either taste amazing or like something aliens with no knowledge of human cuisine would synthesize for an abductee, and there's very little in-between. Their mango slices and jerk flavored banana chips are incredible.
How's it work? Do you have to rehydrate it or something? I'm just imagining it being dry & brittle like freeze dried fruit, but can't imagine how that'd work when cooking meat
learning tonight that a number of people get weirdly furious when you post pictures of storable food online. apparently being prepared for an earthquake or backpacking is counter-revolutionary. Who knew!
It's become code for Doomsday Preppers and that's a shame. Anyone who has ever been without power for a few weeks after a natural disaster quickly learns that having enough supplies on hand to not be completely miserable is a good thing.
i have been getting a lot of "you're discouraging people from rising up" when i started posting that people with suicidal ideation should avoid buying guns on a whim
its somewhere between sad and frustrating that another social media site so quickly reached the "I like pancakes";"so you hate waffles?" line of thinking in likely record time
I posted in reply to someone else in this thread with a stockpile, but if you’re picking up freeze dried meals, Mountain House has a big ol’ sale going for benefit of American Red Cross. Ends up being like $7.50 a pack compared to the usual like $14 or whatever.
Oh, and my friend found this a while ago.
I’m normally partial to all-in-one meals (MH, Peak, etc) but being able to take random veggies and ingredients to make your own meal or add more to existing ones sounds nice.
It's like 2 to 5 grand depending on size. They also don't hold a ton of food. Like if you want to you can do a lot of fun stuff with them but it's not practical vs just buying freeze dried food.
I have one in my house and it's great for two people who need low sodium diets to have fast dinners and easy camping food. The medium harvest right can hold up to 12 meals.
UPDATE: i overcooked the first one a little and the texture is definitely different from meat that wasn't freeze dried but it's pretty decent, if I'd just finished a long hike or something i suspect this would hit like a sonovabitch
One time a "texas" representative posted a picture of a brisket he made. Shit was drier than the Sahara desert and looked horrible. The amount of hate he received was fantastic, and even I joined in an east coast person
Not bad. Have had a lot of success on a long backpacking trip with a foil-wrapped hard-frozen-for-days-beforehand ordinary steak in the backpack. Depending on temps and trip length it keeps alright. Not sure how much water weight it adds.
Honestly, I didn't think that was a product to cook from just the packaging. I am slightly less mortified by it now that I know it isn't eaten raw. (Not a fan of streak, but rehydrated meat is a scifi staple and that is kinda neat)
I kinda wanna try it and experiment with different amounts of marinade in the soak water. Probably don't want to go full-strength, but a solution of 10 or 20% might yield some tasty results.
They really look like something that'd be fantastic to have with you to add to other foodstuffs while trekking/hiking/going foraging. Might be a banging addition to an ad hoc mushroom stew.
As expected. I wish I had freeze-dried steaks bc ... actually it probably takes longer than cooking frozen things, but you get the joke -- I kinda forget to eat when I'm stressed and ... I don't remember the last time I had a real food. It was probably a Friday but not the most recent one.
And it's not the political situation making me survive on vodka and Dr Pepper after ... well, not exactly sober for a year but only partaking one weekend every other month. Politics I can ignore. Y'know when @iwriteok.bsky.social had to run reruns for a month not too long ago? It's basically that.
Hey, as a request, could you do a playlist of American episodes? I feel like if organized, you've shined a light through a whole serious of episodes, on at least a century of plotting. Possibly starting from the Business Plot against FDR, by the Oligarchs, that has led to this moment.
Okay, I stand corrected, but you fuckin' know the week of reruns I'm specifically referencing. And maybe you're making it a joke bc we have the same fucked-up sense of humor?
I've had these before and the texture is definitely noticeable but the overall experience wasn't meaningfully worse than a steak you'd get at like chili's or something
Bought some stuff like that in anticipation of a hurricane, The Algorithm™ decided I was a Prepper and started sending me ads for all this tacti-cool bullshit and for buying gold.
When the Iraq War started I started getting spam selling gas masks and stinger missiles and stuff, and I don't even know what I did to get on that list! I was a depressed receptionist at an accounting software firm. It was pretty fun spam. I wish I'd kept it.
You should look into Meshtastic if you get a chance. Very cool low power radio based texting. My friends and I have been working on setting up a node network here in STL for disaster purposes.
I’m vegan but I gave up being evangelical about it cuz no one likes those people. I’m 100% certain that I’d do whatever it took to survive during a “fallout” dystopian style post apocalyptic situation. For me being vegan is a result of living in a civilized situation and it’s a personal choice.
Tangent but I've been trying to find powdered egg (Canadian bc you know), in case bird flu/lack of safety sys situ gets worse and it seems crazy expensive. Is that normal? I thought it was used lots for industrial cooking? Anyone know?
Last time I saw it was a few years back and it was super expensive then, too, so I think it's just spendy all the time?
(I buy a fair amount of this stuff because when we lose power we lose water too, and with celiac I pack food when I travel. Also freeze dried corn is a delicious snack lol)
Ah, thanks. Too bad but glad to know. I'm fibro/me, so easy qual food is key, getting and preparing. Now my supply lines and procedures are threatened... Always meant to check dry bc we've a very small freezer but larger risks too much food on failure. Thx for the corn tip! 😸
Yeah man what are you doing, it's not like fascism has taken over and the climate is becoming increasingly more unstable and hostile! Everything's fine, everyone i know evacuating from fire, hurricane, tornado warnings constantly is SO NORMAL DUDE. Now if you'll excuse me my car is under water
Bluesky is turning toxic :/ I just took a week off to see if it got any better. It has not. People are freaking out and scared and can't point their emotions in an appropriate direction unfortunately
I spent a pretty big chunk of today just reflecting on my belief that I think some of the problems of social media are fundamental, inherent, and intractable, including that it sort of encourages people to try to pick arbitrary fights for attention.
Asking the important questions, idgaf about storable food being counter revolutionary or whatever reactionary shit that is, I wanna know how good shelf stable steak is dammit!
What? I don’t see any scenario, in any ideology, when having lots and lots of non-perishable food should be reprehensible. I bet both Hitler and Stalin kept copious amounts of joyless preserves.
I dunno, like, what’s even the point of eating a steak if it’s been freeze-dried? It’s hard to imagine that it’s retained the qualities of a steak that make the steak good. Seems easier to just eat beef jerky
Because most of the people who are into storable food are, y'know.
And backpackers are just weird, cutting the handle off their toothbrush to save a couple grams. If you're that concerned about weight, you can just leave the toothbrush entirely and go a couple days without, it won't kill you.
Like, I'm a bi atheist who votes Democrat, but I have more firearms within arm's reach of my desk than a lot of people have seen in their life. We're the exceptions to the stereotype.
For funsies: I think seven? modern 1911, Taurus PT-101, S&W Model 32, 1915 Webley MkVI, 1916 SMLE (with bayonet made in March 1918), 1970s Mini-14, and Remington 870 riot gun. And various swords.
I have a freeze dryer, you can freeze dry raw meat and it turns out pretty well. The pitch is that when you lose electricity you don't have to worry about losing your meat. Also, if you do a lot of traveling or camping it is easier to carry light weight freeze dried foods and not worry about ice.
Oh I backpack all the time and have freeze dried stuff and I understand the basics of it. I just can't imagine a full steak would rehydrate into anything pleasing. And usually you cook meat before dehydrating? Or am I mistaken. Also how's your dehydrated. I've been considering one for a while but 💲💲
Yeah when I use freeze dried meat/veg. It's in along side beans/quinoa/noodles or something. A component in a larger dish. But to try to rehydrate and fry a full slab of steak like you would a fresh one I'd imagine would go poorly
Just don't look at the crosscut, taste isn't too bad, looks, not so much. But over all pretty good. Jerkey when made in a regular dehyrdator is processed raw. With a freeze dryer it is safe to do regualr pieces of meat raw. I still prefer to do it cooked though to be honest and in recipes.
I don't eat meat, but I am devastatingly curious about how you're supposed to prepare and eat this.. it's freeze-dried, but still uncooked? Are you supposed to soak the steaks in something and cook them, or just start chomping on them like Funyuns? Someone help me
I googled the bag, and the back has the following preparation steps, but it doesn't explain how you're actually supposed to accomplish the fifth and final step
You really are just a content creator aren’t you? The people with the unique abilities to know what is happening right now are also the ones so socially maladaptive they can’t get platforms like yours. Like me. Anxiety…
You’re doing fucking MRE reviews like Emmy when democracy is dying.
i run a network that reports on fascism and the movement to end democracy daily and I've been reporting on the far right for a solid decade now. this is a picture of dried food attached to a shit post. you need to calm the fuck down.
But it’s happening right now. We don’t have much time. I’ve been running around with my hair on fire for weeks now. The regime is still young, if we wait any longer they’ll take away ALL of our right to assemble, online and IRL.
Oh I dunno, we’re in the early stages of a dictatorship that will be much harder to stop if we don’t stop it now. Also, if we don’t stop it we could be facing WWIII. Ya know, the usual stuff.
And that's why you feel like you need to yell at anyone who dares to post about anything else?? ESPECIALLY someone whose ENTIRE JOB is writing and talking about fascism and war? Just not room enough for more than one thought at a time, or what?
Will you at least let me dm you intel my team got? I don’t want it out there so we can confirm it’s real and not just our own rumor coming back. But it’s promising as fuck, from local organizing.
I’m just a stay at home mom but I know we need to do something. And quick. I’m way more powerless than you are but I’ve been working my ass off to try and rally people. No offense I just…this is go time.
We need to be organizing right now. All of us. We need everyone sounding the alarm bells. I have a write up I wrote a couple weeks ago, a lot of it has come to pass (Europe Openly preparing for war without US as an ally, suppression of free speech.) it’s bad, dude.
Deep breaths, things are scary. You are one of many people that are afraid and want to make change. Change will regardless. You are not uniquely gifted to do this alone.
Take a step back from the internet and take some time for yourself.
Oh I know, I’m forming a group of like minded people to act as a think tank/outreach group. It’ll be less hectic once we have more members. I was worked up last night but I’m feeling much better today. Thanks!
I did my own freeze dried steak, I didn't buy it. I rehydrated it in hot water, then cooked it in a skillet with butter and herbs and salt and pepper. Flavor was really good. The cross section looked not the best and it doesn't come back out with the exact same texture either.
Okay, but why are there four steaks in the picture? The bag clearly says "5 steaks." I know everyone is going on about rehydration etc but am I missing something?
Aspic, technically. Like meat Jello. The Victorians would embed food in aspic in elaborate molds and serve it like an enormous, savory, cursed Jello salad.
I can't look at canned chicken without remembering that episode of MASH where Winchester and Houlihan share a canned chicken and both get apocalyptic diarrhea.
I remember when Ashens did a review of a different brand of whole canned chicken, only it didn't come out nearly as intact as this. https://youtu.be/rVza_AnhQ3E?feature=shared
"Father forgive us for what we must do. You forgive us and we'll forgive you. We'll both forgive each other until we all turn blue. Then we'll whistle and go fishing up in heaven" ~John Prine
Remember, You kids is what Robert Rodriguez does to finance his other works. Same director as the considerably more revolutionary Mariachi series. So in that context, it makes a lot more sense.

Practical nevertheless I guess 🤔
🐕
You can probably buy them outside of Amazon but here's a quick link for the curious.
You may be further instructed via horrid indescribable night terrors. The stars are nearly right. F'taggan!
Post several paragraphs about how it is indescribable in the most purplest of prose
Seems like a fun and tasty way to court botulism.
I don’t want to open a week’s worth every damn time.

I mean, jerky and biltong is a thing.
I feel like these would be a great keto snack.
That’s freeze tartare.
It's all good.
We tried 😂
This picture tells me you may be the kinda guy to appreciate it lol

they'll probably get soggy like wet cardboard the second they touch your tongue but y'know whatever
i got some from target 6 years ago and loved it even tho it was impossible to chew
i think i will go get some just so we can be trauma bonded together for a lifetime
Although not extravagantly expensive.
they look delicious
How's it work? Do you have to rehydrate it or something? I'm just imagining it being dry & brittle like freeze dried fruit, but can't imagine how that'd work when cooking meat
but also I think about how I haven't had a can of B&M Brown Bread in 15 years because of prepper scalping.
Me, I just hoard ramen noodles. Can't afford anything else anymore.
1. How’d you cook it, and how’s it taste?? Most of my freeze dried meats have been in the “bits in soup” form factor.
2. Saw your comment about comms: I’m an electronics tech, HAM, and almost done with my BSEE. If you’ve got any questions or ideas hit me up!
Bet it's because of the block lists I use. Keeps the Russians and the MAGots away.
Debatable if they ever did know but you get the point

No fridge, but I had a membership for coffee at Panera, and they don't check your cup to see that you really just got hot water 3 or 4 times a day.
Robert will not: Post a picture of a tough steak online
Post steak on the Internet
I do it all the time
Beats my peanut butter and cheese tortilla
(There is a tragic lack of mad food science gifs)
Except pigs which are generally pretty cool
If you could get bacon out of goats the world would be a better place
(I buy a fair amount of this stuff because when we lose power we lose water too, and with celiac I pack food when I travel. Also freeze dried corn is a delicious snack lol)
... yeah, that tracks...
see now your being tried in the aftermath for witch craft and the stakes are burned for being tools of the devil
And backpackers are just weird, cutting the handle off their toothbrush to save a couple grams. If you're that concerned about weight, you can just leave the toothbrush entirely and go a couple days without, it won't kill you.
You gonna die if you eat that!

i spend my work week reporting on what's happening and trying to provide people with actionable advice on what to do. it's Sunday. I am tired.
Take a step back from the internet and take some time for yourself.
"Your steak is only slightly thinner for the journey."
How long they stay good for (according to bag at least)
do it for science
